To be fair, at that point he wasn't wrong! Rodgers' career production even taking his worst seasons to that point as a baseline was better than anyone the Jets had had at quarterback in a LONG time. But that was looking at the past too much, without considering the very likely possibility that age and returning from an injury could cause a dropoff. And, well, look what happened.

The New England Patriots belong on this list. The Jerod Mayo hire has been a disaster. No free agent will come to the Pats as long as Mayo is HC...or Eliot Wolf is GM. Ron Rivera is a FANTASTIC motivator and man-management specialist. Even towards the end in Washington and Carolina, that stayed true. There's room for a man with that skillset. It's the other parts of being a HC where he's clearly slipped up.

@@InchonDM I agree. Rivera always had his players motivated to play. If he did a better job at picking his coordinators and coaches, we would probably have a much better view of his career as an HC. Still, he is only one game under .500 with a Super Bowl appearance and is a two-time Coach of the Year honoree. And those Carolina years ... they probably overachieved a bit as it was pretty much Newton and the running game - the Super Bowl season their best WR was Ted Ginn Jr. and they still won. In Washington ... Tyler Heinicke? Sam Howell? Name me a coach winning with those QBs. Now, if he does get another job, I hope it is not the Jets. After Carolina and Washington ... that would remarkably be a major step backwards!

This is hardly fair. Belichick was already a 2x Super Bowl winner before he ever met Tom Brady, as the DC with the Giants, and his ability to _coach_ players and run games is exceptional. It's when you get to making coordinator hiring decisions, which he was good at in the past but really fucked up on in the later years, and in particular in giving him GM power, that you get the situation you saw at the end of his time with the Patriots. His bad decisions in those areas eventually stacked up enough bad-decision debt that his skills in other areas couldn't overcome it any longer. Is he still a great coach _in the modern NFL?_ That's a different question. League's different now than it was at the turn of the millennium. He WAS a great coach, that cannot be denied. But times change and everyone has a use-by date in this league.
