If you ever decide to roll into the Rise of Bangtan docu series it really shows how BTS were taking risks lyrically. This was their debut song and telling kids to rebel in a sense hahaha RoB shows the type of culture surrounding youth and also the kpop industry that BigHit stood outside of.

Any questioning or speaking up against your elders or the system was edgy in Korea, and it still is to an extent. When you know that Korea has the highest suicide rate between 10-19 yr olds IN THE WORLD then it makes you love BTS more for trying to address this. That was the genius of Big Hit, and still is, letting BTS tell their own stories. Even back then it was from their hearts and ARMY knew it. 💜

They were such babies in this, lolol. Jungkook was only 15! The message in this song is relevant to all young people, but it was an especially revolutionary debut song for Korea where children were very much expected to live their parents' dreams within a very specific box. The message gets even more in your face in their song N.O where they flat out criticize the education system in Korea.

I love baby Bangtan. They were so adorable. South Korea is really hyper focused on hard work and they push their kids to study hard to become what their parents think they should be. (If you end up watching enough BTS footage or even Korean TV shows - aka kdramas - you'll hear them use the phrase "I'll/we'll work harder" pretty frequently). And Koreans are highly respectful of their parents as a society so they often forego their dreams to do what their parents want. As someone else already mentioned, they have a high suicide rate. So, BTS coming out and criticizing their society in their debut album was pretty crazy. And they've continued to do that throughout their career. They are pretty bold. It's one of the reasons people love them so much. Great reaction! BTS will definitely draw you out of your comfort zone. Glad you're up for it. 😊

A lot of the props and stuff are homemade and like a dollar store/party store equivalent to save on cost. This video is actually so impressive considering the lack of funds years ago. The entire staff came together to help BTS and Big Hit succeed.

As you point out, Big Hit was not one of the Big 3, so it did not have the same resources as them, but since in kpop MVs are an important part of the concept, they always invested in having a good production company. Even the one who made No more dream has been in charge of most of BTS's MV. The company had greater difficulties as a result of the expiration of the contracts of two male groups that it had in common with other agencies and due to the dissolution of a female group (also shared) due to legal problems of two members, Big Hit having to assume various payments and expenses. because of that. The moment came when it almost went bankrupt, while people pointed out that they cheated to increase sales numbers. Precisely the fact that BTS had good sales and increased its presence in the world is what helped Big Hit to continue and grow so much that it now earns more than Big3.

RM and Suga were underground rappers and J-Hope - among other things - a street dancer with a dance crew. So what coolness dictates come from those experience. (RM - under another name - was already famous enough that Suga had heard of him and JK was a fan - that is the reason he choose the minor label instead of a another big label) They never wanted to give less than perfect MVs as they never wanted to be emberassed for the quality of their work so money was invested in these. But for example "We are bulletproof 2" and "One more Day" show that this meant that other MVs were short on more stuff. It is very directed to THE promoted song of their debut album. If I remember correctly RM injured himself on set. If you wanted to know about finances: When the last trainee not to debut was send away Jin hadn't moved in and Jimin, Tae and JK were sleeping on the floor (they all slept in one room for years). There are vids were it is mentioned that Jin raided his mom's kitchen for kitchen ware and him paying for JK's banana milk. There is also at least one celebration were they couldn't even afford chicken for it. The company had so little money that BTS didn't even know if they would debut at all. For "I need U" the managers acted instead of actors and the managers also loaned their cars for "Run". Suga worked through pre-debut days and was run over during it resulting in a lasting shoulder injury that was operated on in fall of 2020. They also jumped in as extras for other MV for other artists that were co-managed by Big Hit. The company was in debt till 2016, I heard. For the first MVs I'd try *1theK* channel. They count as official and have better translations for some of the first MVs of BTS (some of those have translations but they are not always good). Fire for example has on the official video a very interesting misstranslation. "The Rise of Bangtan" in epsiode 2 talks about the lyrics and explains more in the next to another song of theirs. (Dope is a different song.) Also you may have to look up "n-po generation". That was shocking to me. *bby* *gang* *mag* 's video essays may also be interesting to you. (I certainly liked his stick figures) You nice! Keep going!

BigHit (their company) was founded in 2005, there were 4 employees in 2007 and close to bankruptcy, the CEO (Hitman Bang) was a well known producer prior to founding his own company and he basically funded the whole thing for awhile. The company got its first break with a different group in 2009, RM joined in 2010 and they debuted BTS in 2013, so by that time they had a little bit of money but were still mainly banking on Hitman Bang’s reputation of producing hit music (hence his name) the company also has joint ventures with JYPE (one of the big 3 companies) and Source Music, they ran into some trouble in 2014 but once BTS got their first music show win in 2015 it’s been mostly uphill (financially) for BigHit

I love baby Bangtan. They are so tiny and adorable but Lawsy that style only worked on Suga who has the swag for it. They made it work but seeing their style evolve is a trip BUT the music and message have been there from the beginning. Especially in a repressive society like Korea they have the highest teen suicide rate in the world because of pressures to “get a govt job” and don’t rebel. So they are really pushing things to debut as idols with such a revolutionary message. Very punk rock of them and the exact thing I love. For me my dad and grandmother have lectured me my entire life to “get a govt job like your dad” (who is a retired DOE civil engineer that worked in Los Alamos labs) “so you can retire with a pension” which is hilarious to me and not for my rebellious self. I’ve done the exact opposite and taken a lot of riskier jobs and life in Silicon Valley has been very good to me and I’ve been able to easily retire before 50 (but I can’t tell them because they just don’t understand). And STILL both tell me to get a govt job. These Korean boys in their teens, only 2 were over 20 and just barely (Suga was 20, Jin 21) had a better message about living your life for yourself than I’ve seen in a long time.

You’re right that the budget being small is relative. They’re still a company doing the MV. They had dance studio space, a small apartment for the boys to live in, space for producers etc. They had to make the MV look good or else all the other expenses could be all for nothing if no one saw/listened to BTS.

Since this was their debut song they didn't realize at the time that English Subtitles were going to be important to them. But what is important to realize that this was a song that pushed the idea of dreaming of your own dreams and working towards those dreams. They began with these ideas early on and this concept was hard for them as they got alot of hate about these ideas not only from parents but also from the system and government at large. This was the beginning of the hate they endured from the beginning of their career.

Just some background, South Korean schools are 8 hours and then students go to night academies for an additional 4 to 8 hours. Competition is fierce to get into the best universities. Most grading is done on a curve. The top three are known as S.K.Y. (Seoul, Korea, Yonsei). South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates. The leading cause of death for people between 9 and 17 is suicide (in the U.S. suicide amongst 12-19 year olds is the 3rd leading cause). BTS' first 3 albums (the school trilogy) address the issues of young people, including education and societal pressures to succeed. At the end of ON MV the words No More Dream appeared, are pushed out and Dream remains. (BTS' second MV is N.O. ON is reflecting back to this earlier album.)

It’s important to remember that they’re dressed for the concept… how they’re acting is based on the concept… this is not at all how all of them dressed lol this is how their company styled them for this particular concept with lower budget. In Korean popular music.. it’s not just the song and dance… it’s in every single detail of the background and everything has to match this once specific concept. You have to get far outside the western mentality of things and it will be easier than to focus so much on how they look… normally groups wouldn’t be caught dead in no money outfits like they are ….Not having that foundation of knowledge of the industry really hinders your understanding that f the big picture. It’s okay and know you said you’re going to get into watching “the rise of bangtan” at some point here and it will definitely help you understand a bit more about how different what they’re doing is… and the budget stuff as well… so excited for you to finally be able to really see why even this debut isn’t so unique and special in their industry and culture 😀

You're right I think this just shows how BH grew with BTS too. So even their bangtan bombs, behind the scenes evolved in time. My guess this video is their debut song so they probably poured resources in this direction to make a good impression. The promotions looked more rocky like they couldn't get proper venues for some of their meet and greets. I recall reading accounts that Bang pd had to take a bunch of loans to keep their project running. I also like the walking on the back choreo. It keeps reminding me of how BTS set out to break walls but it's crazy the level of walls they're now challenging.

The song is more about parental expectations being pushed onto their kids, a culture of adults choosing their kid's future for them. Which is completely in line with BTS's direction of talking about the common societal issues of the younger generation, as they got older their social commentary started to expand beyond that. It'd be kinda weird for the debut title track to be about haters.

I'm not where I want to be yet, but I'm getting there. A friend of mine doing the same thing makes a half mil a year and that's where I want to be. But you got it! From their earlier stuff ( if you are going to bounce around) I'd like to see you react to Not Today (interesting set in a quarry) and N.O.- similar messaging to this, interesting but simple (I think) sets. Also, since you haven't done many live reactions, while you are back in the early days, I recommend Born Singer. Simple performance, but deep lyrics about their debut (they rewrote JColes Born Sinner). It's particularly timely bc they are releasing it on their upcoming anthology album for the first time, so ARMY is excited. Thanks for your reactions! Edit- I also think this sparked what became a very severe eating disorder for Jimin, from which he has recovered, but it was at its worst during the Blood, Sweat, Tears era. Jimin fasted for ten days before the video and kept getting nosebleeds while filming. It was terrible.

If you see their early stuff, you'll notice a few things that are kind of heartbreaking. RM was always wearing sunglasses, I think because he was not considered handsome, and they literally made J-Hope wear a mask for the same reason. As for Jimin, he was always put in sleeveless shirts and "forced" to show his abs, which led to some negative body issues for him. I don't think any of the vocalists were comfortable with the concepts they were given. When their image changed, Jin and Jimin, especially, seemed a lot more comfortable and happy. I understand why they were given concepts or roles to play, but when they were finally allowed to be themselves, things really took off for the whole group.

Interesting what you mentioned because in retrospect, I was also a music snob back in 2010 to 2015 so I definitely didn't pay attention to anything kpop at all. But I found them when I needed them the most and have stuck ever since. The music and lyrics really transcend any barrier. That's BTS and Army.

I keep forgetting to tell you cuz I get so shocked every time, but your intro is like two (apple ipad/iphone) notches higher than is comfortable for me personally. Unsure if anyone else has been struggling with it... It jumpscares me every time and is very unsettling when I keep forgetting to down the volume before the video start /casual /lighthearted /genuine lol yeah their old days they dreamed of having fans but now they dream of being fathers XD it really is an age thing though I suppose the year didnt encourage dadhood much omg I forgot I know all the moves for this song fhuchfhhdh I didnt even realize omg I need to start practicing or something thats great exercise- oh and related to the volume thing, I really appreciate how you go through the comments and are genuine. It can be tiring and stressful to go into the comments. It's a valid thing to avoid them. The fact you're so active that I feel like I can mention the volume and you will probably see it and maybe even adjust it (i dunno if its easy for you since im unsure how you have your intro saved) is signficant. In the past, years ago now, I stopped watching a channel because he never saw my comments on the intro and I just couldn't handle the jumpscares anymore. I feel far more dedicated to your channel than that one just because of you responding to comments. Jeez this is like Pied Piper (the song, sorry you havent listened yet so it may not make sense) cuz Im like "yes respond!" but also "theyre a hellscape escape while you can" XD like Tumblr Their choreo for this song, their DEBUT, is legendary Ooo, volume thing again: Maybe if the intro volume is a pain to change maybe your mic could be turned up so it matches the level of the intro! Then the audio would be consistant and I can have the volume prepared constantly Yeah lol the big three are those kids who get As and up the grading curve

All the members were suppose to show their abs in the beginning but then BitHits decided only Jimin had to show his abs. Jimin did not want to show his abs according to RM. He was very upset about it and went to RM telling him how much he did not want to do this. After awhile when Jimin saw how the fans loved it, he loved showing them.

the official mv's have no autogenerated subs, they are actually the real subs, so no need to change it BigHit is actually the first one I saw that had the english subs before bts i didn't see any subs on MV's of other kpop idols/other entertainment companies.

Interesting. I'd say I wouldn't enjoy BTS very much in 2013 but for different reasons. I think they might caught my attention in the "Danger" MV because of eyeliners 😅 (yeah, but also because Danger definitely is a music more capable of calling my attention). I'm glad you're being more open-minded, that's great!

This is a low budget video because they were from a small company that was literally on the verge of bankruptcy, but the fact that their debut song was NO MORE DREAM makes me feel very proud. I think it sets them apart from the other groups since their debut, the message is deeper and connects with the students who feel pressure from their parents, teachers and society to be something they don't want to be. Korea has a high su¡c¡de rate in young people due to pressure from society, students study up to 10 hours a day Sorry for my english, i'm from Mexico
