Shaykh Abu Bakr Effendi (d.1880) was one of the most influential scholars in the history of Islam in Cape Town, South Africa. Over the years, historians have identified him as a young Hanafi Kurdish scholar sent by the Ottoman Empire to teach the Muslims of South Africa, but Historian Dr Halim Gencoglu believes, based on archival sources, Abu Bakr Effendi was very different to who we once thought he was.
Biography of Dr Halim Gencoglu:
Dr Halim Gencoglu, Turkish historian, author of several books recently research fellow in African Studies at the University of Cape Town. His research interest revolves around the history of colonisation in Africa from the perspective of those who were marginalised. Using archival and family documents, he explores the stories and legacies left behind by those whose histories were erased through the process of colonisation.
