I love nitro finishes and the Gibson smell is amazing! I owned a Gibson and it was nearly impossible to not smell it every time I took it out. The older PRS nitro is absolutely gorgeous even years later and the feel is perfect as it's not tacky at all. Personally though I prefer the way Fender's nitro ages so perfectly. I too hope the new PRS finishes will get some of that aging because then it could be the best at everything, except maybe smell.

On the partscasters I've built from unfinished bodies I've sprayed both nitro and polyurethane. I kind of like the polyurethane the best, since it isn't super thick and hard like a polyester finish on cheap guitar but it will protect things like a hydro-dip and other artsy designs well. And, I don't have to worry as much about accidental relicing due to a reaction with a stand or case.

I don’t know why this video kept showing up on my feed this week but this really sums it up. I love playing my fender strat and it is so comfortable. It’s the guitar I play the most…. Nitro relic Sherwood green metallic… and plugged into a 65DRRI it’s perfection. Then I see a video like this and step to my other room with the blues jr and the 59RI 60th anniversary (yes price mid-matched) and play the best most soulful improvisational mess I have ever played IMHO all for my wife to hear through the walls. The smell of the LP and the feel…. This video does a good job of summing up the intangible nonsense of finishes, resonance, feel, and mojo…. Thanks.

Man, this is a great video because I’ve been nerding out about nitro finishes for pretty much a year 😂😂 I’ve been looking into getting an American Original in hopes that within a few years of gigging it it would show some real tasty wear. Can’t decide between 60’s Strat or 60’s Tele, OR the colors!! Man, I used to work at a guitar store and the smell of Gibson is literally like nothing else.. I would buy hundreds of candles or cologne bottles.. But is it just me or do Gibsons not wear as easily as Fender? Maybe worn gibsons just arent as popular, who knows. Also I’m glad I’m not the only one, when Baxter said he gets snobby and if it’s finished in poly he doesn’t like it as much, that’s exactly me 😂😂 I also own one of the purple 50’s road worn tele’s they did last year, and I love that guitar, but now for me it’s time to also pick up a nice American nitro guitar! Just gotta choose which one.

I have a standard les Paul sitting in my window to try and fade it (lol) a VOS Gibby, several nitro fenders and one poly fender (acoustics excluded although Martin ain’t no shab when it comes to nitro) . The VOS nails the thin nitro IMO. Poly makes it tougher to find a good guitar. Nitro or death.

Butyl-acetate is the sweet smell in nitro lacquers.!! Really all of the acetates have a sweet smell, but butyl was found to be the best nitro thinner. I prefer fresh shellac with a small amount of gum benzoin added, smells like vanilla.!! Plus shellac gives a much better longer lasting finish when French polished That is much easier to repair and last for centuries.!!

Will chipped poly allow the guitar body wood to breathe like a nitro finish? Is that a thing? I have a strat that had some bad drips in the finish. I hated them and picked at them till they chipped off. It does look a bit like a bad relic attempt but is still better looking IMO than drippy.

My 1988 PRS CE24 with maple neck is now 34 years old. The fretboard has that classic worn look that you get with maple necks. The body has a few dents, some paint chips popped off around the edges of the body (I think from wood shrink & expand pressure), and finish wear on the top edge where my picking arm rubs on the body. It looks aged, well played, but for the most part the finish is as good as day one. It's still a gorgeous blue that I've never seen since. That being said, I love the look of the nitro finish on old Fenders and Gibsons. It's all good.

I hate to be argumentive, but my 1999 Peavey Wolfgang USA made guitar is THE best smelling instrument ever. I took it to a music shop last week and without saying anything about it the employees were passing it around to smell it. Maybe it's the beeswax finished neck, but it's seriously aromatic. My gibson are in a distant 2nd place in the smell category.

I've been in love with all the big three. Have had srats, Les Pauls, MIII, 335, and P.R.S Custom. All American made. Currently I'm thinking my P.R.S is my go to right now. Ah, but it has the dreaded poly finish. You know it get sticky sometimes and it might feel like it's hindering your playing. All you need to do (besides sanding the neck a little to make it smooth, and making it ugly, I'm not a relic man, I am a relic so I like my guitar as new looking as possible. Only my humble opinion) ther is a product I have been using for decades, and it takes care of the poly problem. It's a spray for your strings so they don't rust, and it make playing more enjoyable, spray a tiny amount on the nut and you'll find you stay in tune much longer, ofcourse lightly spray the strings and the back of the neck. Now it couldn't be faster, I don't care that's a fact. I've been using this product for decades. It will not harm your guitar and for me it's a must. If you never tried it, do yourself a favor, in any music store. Finger ease, could very well change your life, it did mine.. Have a great day, stay safe.

I was thinking the same thing. I had an LP with the thickest finish (literally almost couldn’t make out the serial number) and my tele has a lovely poly finish. Both guitars sounded great and resonated just fine. I don’t believe the finish has as much of an impact on solid body guitars as other factors like nut material, strings and pickups. The aesthetics and feeling of aged nitro is legit but again, probably the last thing that actually matters on a guitar for me.

Does anyone know the truth behind this?? It would be a reasonable reason why Fender and PRS uses poly, Music Man... Poly, Kiesel guitars.... poly, Rickenbacker.... I thought was poly. Any thoughts?? Does anyone know if this is true??

First, yes the use of nitrocellulose lacquer is regulated at the state level. However, I don’t believe that it is banned from use in any state yet. Second, Fender definitively uses nitro in the Custom Shop in California so I doubt that US made non Custom Shop models with nitro finishes are done in Mexico. However, it is possible since all amp cabinets are made in Mexico as are all non Custom Shop guitar/bass necks.

It is interesting, the makers in California seem to all use a form of poly and lets face it, California has some fantastic guitar manufacturers. Oh well, it will be interesting to follow. I think prs always cause they just try to always IMPROVE and make them more amazing as possible and paul is super keen on perfecting things like a mad scientist and not only that they just really focus so much on making the guitar wood as cooked as possible and completely perfect and everything about prs it's the guitar worlds current innovation and excitement. Also nitro isnt better then others, it's just an older finish material used, it's not gonna sound BETTER eith it or when it cracks and all that stuff PRS V12 still amazing I love it OVER nitro it is just nitro with poly hardness And prs obsesses so much about composition and what's in the finish and how much goes into what inside the finish and finish thickness and making it just PERFECT as possible and how much the colour pops LIKE POPS with prs finishes they're legit perfection, no gibson can make a flamed top pop like prs does, they legit are just the flame popping out! And Gibsons always feel like you see finish OVER the flamed top 🙄👎

nitro might be very allright however in absence of nitro just use duplicolor clear. .the wood has to 'breathe' enough to be itself yet repel greasy stains. .and that's all there is

if one could buy a Gibson, collect the air upon opening, put it through a mass spect, develop a perfume ... and you own the patent .. think it would sell? (probably being done in some lab)

Lol...nitrocellulose has little smell at all and surely not a sweet smell that is the butyl acetate they thin the nitro with that smells very much like vanilla. Being an evaporative part of the finish, it gasses off Over a longer period of time...but eventually .... The smell becomes non existant. It is definitely at it's strongest gassing off in the first few months of its application.!!

I would have to disagree with you on Gibson's finishes. Since I own vintage gibsons and the new ones I would think that the nitro finishes have changed drastically on gibsons. For one thing Gibson has done a terrible job smoothing their finishes out and Orange peel seems to be a huge issue with newer gibson's. As far as that sweet smell that is plastaside that is added to the nitro And the older instruments do not smell like that nor do they feel so sticky and so soft. Sadly this does not seem to wear off and I have gotten rid of quite a few new gibsons because I could not work with the sticky finishes. I have an Eric Johnson stratocaster And I do like the finish on that instrument. It does not display the sticky characteristics of the Gibson finish and is much smoother and without Orange peel. I recently purchased a David Grissom PRS with the new finish and so far so good although the poly finishes were fine as they were very thin. It will be interesting to see over the next few years if PRS sticks with the nitro over cellulose finish. I guess only time will tell.

So basically.....my Les Paul Tribute is in fact Nitro, even though it's the thinnest satin finish....but in fact, it "breathes", and has therefore more resonance than any of the high ranges.

I used to be a massive nitro fanboy, but I've realized you can finish a guitar well with poly without any tonal difference. I wish Gibson would start a line of more affordable guitars in poly. I'd be highly interested in purchasing that.

Or in old man car talk: Some prefer a 4 barrel carb and some prefer fuel injection. They both work. I agree with you. And, some people can't afford the additional cost of a nitro finish. I can, but not everyone can afford the more expensive toys...
