About 30 years ago I worked a couple of years in the Hema baking factory we made all the baked goods (except bread) for about 26 Hema's. I must have made over a million saucijzenbroodjes. Now you have to try the worstenbroodjes when you are in Brabant.

I have googled where to buy the best saucijzenbroodje…..and you know what? It is in your hometown Dordrecht. We are talking about bakery De Man, on the corner of Krispijnseweg and Hooftstraat. Above the shop door is written in ‘cow letters’: the tastiest sausages in the world (and surroundings). You guys must visit the bakery some day soon, to check if it’s true 😉

a lot of these saucijzenbroodjes come from the same industrial bakery / factory (many bakers where you buy as a consumer also use these). there are of course still differences such as quality of ingredients. In addition, they are bake-off products, so there can also be a huge difference per store location.

Specially in winter times. It will pick you up. Or even for a treat! For my family, it's always special! The flaky, buttery consistancy of it... that's was always kinda "posh" , because of the amount of butter in it. Nowadays, it's more common. With sauce??.....mmmm... it's oke, but I don't remember anyone put sauce on their saucijzenbroodje. But please DO if you like that! Why not?

The best ones are not found in the supermarket. Go to the local bakery for the best ones. They are usually much more fresh and hand made and they tast much better than the ones you find in the supermarket. And they flake off and create a mess :-). They are supposed to do that. A roll that doesn't flake off is either not fresh or factory-made. The best ones are soft, crunchy and flakery, and create a mess when you eat them. And they should be served warm :-). Hema is indeed the best of the bunch that you selected. Hema serves a pretty decent one.

The sausage should be super hot or it's unedible. Remember that most of these classic Dutch foods are "winter warmers". Even though the snack will give you greasy fingers, the thing can be super dry. Washing it down with a cold drafted standard beer is almost mandatory. ... HEMA is trying to be one of those sit-down places (and frankly have been for decades) so you're paying lunchroom money. (Just take their stroopwafels home!) Still not as bad as most HoReCa (now there's a Dutch word you should know about because it doesn't translate to English into a single word) prices.

@@buncharted I don't know about the rest of the country. But 'Brabants worstebrood' is a thing of pride for a lot of bakers in the south. So much so that each often has their own recipe and there's a yearly rating of who makes the best ones. I believe there's a strong divide in the country where 'above the rivers' people eat more saucijzenbroodjes and below the rivers it's more worstebroodjes. I used to live in a small town where both the prize-winning bakery and the prize-winning butcher shop were ran by people of the same family with a passion for food, having their own cattle and mills/fields even. So the butcher did his best to make the best sausage and the bakery tried doing the best breading around it. The worstebroodjes there were delicious a little more salty but also more flavourful and a tad more spicy then the average supermarket ones. I can highly recommend doing a similar comparison on them. But don't stick to supermarket ones because most of those are sub-par. (Some supermarkets do carry local specialties from regional producers so there's exceptions.) Both worstebroodjes and saucijzenbroodjes are considered snack-food. So it's not something you _should_ eat every day because honestly they're just too fatty for that. It's often eaten during tea/coffee-break in the morning or as a quick snack whenever. Or even when it's someones birthday, they will often celebrate by buying a bunch of worstebroodjes for their colleagues at work for breaktime.

I'm also vegetarian, though, so no tasting [sow-síze-ehn bró-tches] ...emphasis is on the 2nd syllable of 'saucijzen'. ;) The Dutch often swallow that last 'n' of 'saucizenbroodje'. I've had sandwiches there that were disappointingly dry, but what I really like are the ciabatta mozarella sandwiches that have an amazingly delicious tomato pesto spread. Unfortunately, however, these are often unavailable because others must really like them too.

Yums. BTW, my Dutch husband corrected my pronunciation too...ugh. So, I corrected my pronunciation for you as well. Some Dutch words are harder than others, but as long as I've been here I think I've mastered most pretty well though I still have problems with some of my dipthongs such as 'eu' combinations and always making 'w' sounds with the 'v' words.

we try to practice them by saying words with them over and over -- that's how we got comfortable saying "leuk" and we're kicking ourselves for not using this video to nail "sauc" - but hey, we'll get there someday 😅

These are generally eaten without sauce (I never did and don't know anyone who dus). I think they might have been on the dry side because they were cold. Worstenbroodjes on the other hand are often enjoyed with ketchup or curry. You should try some of the traditional ones from Noord Brabant.

@@buncharted Worstenbroodjes are made with white bread dough instead of puff pastry, I prefer them over saucijzenbroodjes because they’re less heavy, fatty and are often enjoyed with curry or ketchup. They originated in Noord Brabant, originally as a food preservation technique and were often enjoyed during Dutch Carnaval. They can somewhat of a big deal in the south, there are yearly competitions for ‘Best worstenbroodje of Noord Brabant’ and are even part of Unesco world heritage since 2016. I must say that outside Noord Brabant the worstenbroodjes can be somewhat plain/dry. I’m not a fan of the supermarket ones at all in general.

Bakker Bart And all supermarkets bake of instead of make it and bake it. Was the Dirk one warm? It looked like cold stil need to be baked off, they really need to look like the brown colored lidl one, but of course it needs to be puff pastry. Yeah they need misters chilly sauce a bit heated is nice. I really like the oily ones that you’ll find at train stations or in the cafeteria of a ferry.

And of course the real ones at the real bakery who’s probably more expensive. But as a brabander we’re more of the worstenbroodje, Belgian worstenbroodjes with puff pastry (Brabantse worstenbrood has a bread crust ideal for breakfast on a festival conserved withinthe bead).

Did you eat these COLD?!!! Yuck! They're supposed to be hot. (my personal opinion of course!) That was fun to watch! I don't like peppery foods, so I have a different one as my yummy one, but I have not tested the Hema one yet. Just didn't think to get one there! Our local Bakker Bart has a tendency to bake them to a very very dark brown...too much so, unfortunately, and it is too fatty. My favorite snack is a tub of fresh nuts and raisins. Several kinds to be found. Of course they're the best on the markets, those are really fresh.

Quite a few Jumbo, Albert Heijn, and Spar supermarkets are owned by local franchise takers. They can and do differentiate themselves by offering locally sourced products such as better quality bread from local or regional bakeries or like the Jumbo in Twello own their own next to store bakery. Some supermarkets do the final baking stage, in the store one or 3 times a day. Some supermarkets don't have there own "bake-off" ovens. Regional bakeries for supermarkets also differ. I noticed the bread in Eindhoven had thinner slices than in other parts of the Netherlands. Why? no idea. AH to Go in Deventer has fresh bread early in the morning. Even better are the croissants from "Super Gewoon", formerly a SPAR branded supermarket. SPAR, an originally Dutch supermarket, wikipedia that, has two kinds of stores in the Netherlands. Convience stores like you will find in bigger city centers, near train stations or within petrol stations. They used to have more normal supermarkets too but are trying to convince the franchise takers to become convenience stores. This is not something that will work everywhere hence the SPAR branding is sometimes replaced by something local while the store still sells SPAR branded goods. You missed PLUS and Hoogvliet supermarkets. Between bakerij Bart and Hema you could also test Febo and La Place. HEMA was bought by Jumbo a few years ago. Jumbo bought the insolvent Vroom& Dressmann (V&D) department stores a few years ago. This included the in store restaurants La Place, which sometimes also existed outside the department stores. Are there differences between Hema, Jumbo and La Place saucage rolls? Maybe not if they are owned by the same franchise taker. Food in larger stations seems to be sold by one company under different brands. So there might be no difference on one station but there may be between stations. I also suspect te AH to go on Utrecht Centraal and the AH to Go on the nearby Square to sell different saucage rolls. HEMA: Hollandse Eenheidsprijzen MAatschapij or ... Hier Eet Men Afval, you decide :)

iI eat a lot of saucijzenbroodjes, and in every town in the West of Holland, i know where to get the best ones, and then I mean at bakeries, of course. I do buy supermarket broodjes as well, and I agree with you on Albert Heijn and Jumbo, they aren't very good. I do like the ones from Lidl, AND from Dirk. I suspect you had a bad batch in the store where you bought them. They are baked in the store in a fully automated overn, the only thing the staff has to do is put in the raw stuff, and take it out when the oven is finished baking, but still there is a lot of difference between batches, for some reason. In most stores, you can choose which one you take. I always choose the ones that are the darkest brown, because they tend to have the most crispy pastry. The ones from Bakker Bart and the Hema were the most expensive, because they were warm, and then you pay restaurant prices. Bakker Bart also sells them cold, to take home, and then they are cheaper. I haven''t been to a Hema in years, so I don't know if they still sell them cold.

When we buy saucijzenbroodjes we make sure to buy them as fresh as possible at a proper bakery or from a bread bar in the supermarket. Our advice is never to buy them prepackaged in plastic, especially from cheap supermarkets like Aldi. They're cheap but tasteless. Oh, and the Dutch don't add mustard, ketchup, mayonaise or other sauces to their saucijzenbroodjes.
