There are different Hotdogs that are much better, those are vacuum sealed and are snappy. They are usually located in the meat section, not the canned foods section. The reason for the canning is for shelf-life and export/import, depending on the factory location. Get the ones from a butcher, they will cost more but taste better (especially grilled). And as far as (dipping) sauces go, "(Gouda's Glorie) Samurai sauce" is my favourite, you should give it a try. Greets from the south of the Netherlands, Maastricht.

To be honest...if it's made in EU, it's not american. I think it's just called that way because it's bigger than normal and different flavour. If americans use real sugar and we use aspartame in it or other fake sugar...it's already different.

The Big American Pizza's name basically only reverts to the thick crust, there is even ones with Nacho's and Kebab in that line which is hardly American. The American Frites Sauce is just a copy of the Mc Donalds sauce you get for the fries here and since they obviously couldn't call it Mc Donalds sauce they probably just called it American sauce. Some of the bigger grocery stores do have some authentic US products like Skippy peanutbutter, Tabasco and A&W Root Beer (AH XL)

American food in the Netherlands is food supposed to be typical American, adapted to the Dutch/European taste. Albert Heijn (Ahold Delhaize) although a Dutch company, realizes 2/3 of his turnover in the USA (e,g. Giant, stop&Shop, Food Lion, Hannaford). As the 5. grocery retailer of the States they know exactly what is the American food taste and where it differs from the European. 😎

McDonalds in the Netherlands had a special sauce for the fries. Every kid just assumed that this was american sauce, as you could not get it elsewhere. At some point, you could buy the sauce in the supermarket, I remember the bottle being white with red, blue and stars on it, and it was marketed as American sauce. Since they could not label it as McDonalds sauce, this is the branding they chose. And it worked. Kids loved to have a little bit of McDonalds at home. In the end i found out that the McDonalds sauce is not used at all in the US (everything is ketchup).

I'm Dutch, my girlfriend is American (LDR) and I've told her about the weird trend we have going on here where the marketing teams slap 'American' on something to make it more appealing. It's a thing they do and It seems to work! 90% of products I tell her about she tells me, nah, never heard of that in my life. Imagine my surprise to find out Philadelphia is American, too! I seriously had no idea! You'd think with the name, right? But names are no sure fire way to figure out where's something from anymore! In any case, glad you liked the pancakes they're my favorite too! Even bought myself some maple syrup (I hope? For some reason they call it acorn syrup in Dutch?) and by god are those things delicious. My favorite treat either she or other American friends have ever send me though? Hot tamales.

I also have had the Big Americans pizza which was ok for a frozen pizza but it was not big, it was actually small like a personal pizza. Funny that they wouldn’t market ketchup as American fry sauce since that is what we use on our fries. The other thing I found weird that a lot of Dutch thought was American was filet American. It is definitely not American but I personally loved it in crackers. I also didn’t realize until later in a funny way that it is raw meat like steak tartar.

Hotdogs are an American derivative of Frankfurter sausages. Knakworsten differ from the latter in that they can contain other meats then pork but are essentially the same product. The lam intestine gave it a snap when broken. Over time it got largely substituted to cheaper alternatives. So they're similar products with a different origin but in the end are essentially the same.

Most of these marketing labels for the products of the big processed food conglomerates are decided by panels of consumers being asked what they associate the product with. Give an assortment of house wives, students, single dads and whatnots a slightly larger than than usual knackwurst in a bun... "American!!" . A pizza with a thick base? "American!" A sauce with pineapple? "Ame... oh... wait...Hawaiian!!" A sauce resembling McDonald's "American!!" Thick, smaller, but not poffertjes-sized pancakes? "American!!" The difference is only that Jan, apparently, does know how to make tasty pancakes. (I've had those and they are good, although obviously nowhere near as good as home made)

The thing is that you won't eat these if you are American ;-) OK you liked 1 🙂 These products are designed to fill a stereotype. Not to have American items available in the Netherlands. These are products for people that never been to the USA. Like the pizza Hawai is not representing Hawaiian cuisine ;-) Like the deep frozen pizza's do not represent Italian pizza's. It's like comparing Dutch pancakes with American pancakes: It is a complete different thing! Different ingredients, different purpose, one will never be the other. Poffertjes are NOT pancakes.. @@buncharted It's raw minced beef (I think it's raw), with some mayo and some more things mixed into it (I think ketchup, salt, pepper, but I'm not sure about that). As far as I know, it is totally unknown in the US. That is why I've always wondered about the name. You'll find it in the cold cuts section (with the meat products for your boterham), You are supposed to use it as a spread on bread or crackers, preferably with pepper, chopped onions and hardboiled egg.

Filet Amercain is like steak tartar not like meatloaf at all. It is also very tasty but a little goes a long way. It’s great on crackers. It is raw though so don’t eat it if your pregnant. I was not aware that it was raw and when I went for a prenatal appt my doctor asked if I was eating raw meat which I said of course not but then my husband said, well…. And that’s how I found out it was raw. He never told me before. 😂

no we in the netherlands dont like fake sugar its the EU regulations that we have to follow. Aspartaam is not bad for you and it doesnt contain calories as well its just a replacement for real sugar. and it makes you less fat and less change of diabetes. we also have drinks that uses Stevia. a natural sugar thats 300 times stronger then sugar. it doesnt contain calories so you wont get fat if you consume it.

No, don’t do that. Disappointment waiting to happen. Even if inbox from the same international brand, everything is tested to local taste and mainly just a marketing thing. I’ve seen do many things abroad called Dutch this or that, up to Dutch cookies in South Korea, all totally foreign to me. And I’ve been around for a while.

If you any s good dog. Get the fresh knakworst at Albert Heijn. 9 in a pack in the cooling cabinets close to the pre cut cheeses. If the original Dutch smoke dog, frankfurter. They really snap. And that’s in the name: knak means crack or snap.

@@komkwam 1) Technically all food prepared in the Netherlands is Dutch food. We don't know what he means by Dutch food, he might be pedantically pointing out that those products made in the Netherlands aren't American food but Dutch food by origin. 2) Dutch food is only boring when you can't cook. It's no more boring then Italian. If all you make is a pasta sauce with spaghetti that's indeed pretty boring even if you sometimes add sausage or a different vegetable.

What I can tell you is that people have eaten exectly the same food in the USA and Europe. When in the US people gained weight, the people in Europe lost weight. Food, with all the hormones and other additives used in the USA are banned in Europe. This has been very well researched and documented. The food that you are looking at now are only meaningless names. "American" is just a meaningless name probably. What else I can tell you is that the choice of food you have in the Netherlands is bigger than in any other country. And that's official. What I suggest you do is buy less fake American food and follow a more healthy diet. Dutch pancakes are not poffertjes. Go to a proper Dutch pancake house and you'll get full size pancakes with any filling, savoury or sweet. Take your time to learn about Dutch food. It will take you many years. What you seem to have been picking up is "named" junk fast food. And portions of everything sre smaller here. This is considered a good thing as you may notice that there are not so many obese people in the Netherlands, although the obesity problem is getting worse.Obesity amoungst other things is contributing to decreasing longevity in the US.

Woosh missing the point of the video. The folks who've been vegan for the longest time and obviously don't appear overweight (unlike the majority of Dutch people as per 2022). Clearly they're people with no concept of nutrition and desperately in search of American tasting food and not at all exploring American stereotypes in the Netherlands in a funny video. As for food selection, Dutch cuisine is traditionally not considered healthy at all. High in red meat, fat/oil and sugar. Doesn't mean we don't understand a healthy diet but by and large our cuisine is less healthy then say Italian or Vietnamese. Not sure what you mean by choice. If you mean the variety in food types then India and China have us beat. If you mean access to different food per country then again you're way off. If you mean for the average person of said country then the image of India and China starts to change. You'd still lose out to countries like Spain and Italy though. And South East Asia has some of the highest dietary variety on the planet. Ranting about the generally poor American diet seems like such a weird segue from the subject of this video.

ugh... the countless amounts of copied and butchered/'adopted' foods that America produces and markets as being from a foreign origin often is way worse. So... yeah... there's that too. And a lot of 'American cuisine' is often an Americanized rip off of food from other cultures anyway. That's some food for thought.

@@buncharted I used to eat typical Dutch. But I eat vegan for 8 years now. I veganised Dutch food, but I cook a lot of international dishes. However, we are used to international flavors since hundreds of years, because of the colonial past. We have Dutchified Indonesian and Kantonese food, but also the Near By East, and very traditional restaurants from basically everywhere. International flavors and give a Dutch home cooked dimension to it is normal to us.

Yes we do have a lot of prepackaged food that is not healthy but there are a lot of local cuisines in America that are not only healthy but very yummy. I cooked a lot for my Dutch husband and he was very surprised by American meatloaf, American goulash (which is basically Dutch macaroni), chili, grilled salmon with Dijon mustard, American thanksgiving which includes a roast turkey, sweet potato casserole, corn soufflé, green bean casserole, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, roasted acorn squash, etc., Tex mex in the south, and Indian fry bread tacos in the southwest. There is so much more like traditional New York pizza or a Chicago deep dish pizza. Barbecue or queso in Texas. Chicken fried steak in Texas. Traditional American pot roast, etc.
