I'm Filipino. Yes, there's some truth to that. Ha ha. I have a Spanish name, but I can manage only basic Spanish. We're mostly Catholic, like most Latin Americans. We have this weird but unique bond with them and Spaniards that just isn't about language. It's culture and faith - we have fiestas, patron saints, love nice clothes. singing and dancing, a kind of devil may care outlook, machismo, and a prickly pride. We share a lot of food with our distant Latin relatives. Like them, we mess up governance. Family and social ties are stronger than loyalty to government. The Philippines is like a piece of Latin America plopped in the South China Sea. We're neither fully Asian nor Hispanic. Maybe somewhere in between. We can relate to Latin Americans but only to a point. Most of us don't speak Spanish anymore. That's why we only drop by family reunions "cada muerte del obispo." We Filipinos are like abuelo's child born out of wedlock whom you've heard about but never really knew. Yet he is still abuelo's son from somewhere.

I feel like we have a love and hate relationship. Since we are the two largest countries in Latin America (not to mention the largest countries for our respective official language), the two largest economies in South America, and the most accomplished countries in the Americas when it come to soccer, the rivalry is inevitable. Our cultures are not 100% similar, but we do share a love for steak, particularly the southern regions of Brazil where most of the population is anyway, and we do share a large European immigrant population, though Brazil is much more racially diverse. We, Argentines, don't have the nice tropical beaches or the Amazon rain forest with its many exotic animals and fruits that Brazil has, so we go there to vacation. Same with Brazil. They don't really have the mountain ranges of the Andes nor the glaciers and ski resorts of the Patagonia region, so they come to visit our country. Not to mention, among our continent, we have the largest and most visited cities. So I'm guessing because Brazil is like an only child in South America since he lacks a Portuguese speaking brother, Argentines can fulfill the role of best friend yet greatest rival altogether.

I'm a "gringo" or maybe a"gavacho" (although I have no French ancestry) and I work construction. I have worked in construction for over twenty five years. The crew I'm a part of consists of a mixture of Hondurans, guys from El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemalans, and guys from Nicaragua. About thirty men altogether. Besides me, there is only one other caucasian on the crew- and from my heart - I say that I am very happy to go to work every day with the best bunch of guys that I have ever worked with. None of them have ever treated me in any bad way. They treat me like I am part of their family, or like an accepted member of their "gang". Any one of them are happy to help me with learning Spanish. I was born and raised in Downtown LA. Theres a huge Mexican and Salvadoran population. There was always this "rivalry" between both, I saw it all throughout elementary, middle school, and all throughout highschool. The "hating" isnt necessarily super hardcore like alot of these people think it is. Im salvadoran and have so many mexican friends. The "rivalry" is more like a friendly punking around and joking about whos soccer team is better (yes, i know we suck), whos food is better, whos more conceited/snob, making fun of each other's slang and all that sort of stuff. I believe its way more common here in California, especially in Los Angeles, so its probably unheard of for those that live in other states or cities.

I'm Costarican and I think what you have said about our relationship with Nicaragua is wrong. The majority of Costaricans don't hate Nicaraguans. We have been brothers and sisters for centuries. All that nationalism shit has been created for political and economical purposes only. Costaricans are nationalists as fuck! I blame the media of both countries.

jajajaja, I can't, the address thing is so accurate. When I was living in Nicaragua my genuine address (on my official ID) was 1 and 1/2 blocks south of the chapel of the holy Guadalupe. Genuine address which was probably the same for at least four houses. Also the biggest rivalry in Central America there is, is probably between Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Panama is just the older brother who already moved out, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras are like the little siblings who either want to show off or still trying to figure it out while the two teenagers NIC and COR are in a constant fight.

I have never in my entire Mexican life heard anybody in Mexico hate on Salvador or any other country EVER ! You got your info wrong !!! ... Seriously I think some Mexicans might playfully 'hate' Argentinians but thats about it ... Mexico is good friends with Brazil and Cuba, in spirit and diplomatically, but we dont have a special love or hate relationship with any other countries,,, Central Americans for the most part are our brothers, that´s how the great majority of people sees it. Maybe some central americans living in USA feel resentful about Mexico, I dont know. But thats in the US, not in the actual countries.

I wasn't aware of the whole Mexican vs El Salvador thing, maybe something happening only in the US? The one thing I do know is that the vast majority of Latin Americans actually living in Latin America do not like having their cultures summarized as just "latin" or "latino" as it omits the cultural and historical differences each country has. In northern Mexico at least people never, if rarely ever, refer to themselves as latino. In news shows and the like, the proper thing is to refer to each people by their nationality. In fact, the common term to refer to all the people is "americano", whose use precedes the US as a country.
