"That's a moor". Sorry Simon, but this reflects a lack of understanding that foreign languages are not pronounced like English and a lack of wider cultural knowledge/familiarity with a fairly common song. It's not Othello: try to sound more like Chico Marx. Unless like the Naples map, it was a dry joke (in which case, good on you, you have fooled me). But I don't think so, since I have heard similar pronunciation errors by you in other videos. Or, if it is meant to be a joke, you need to make this clearer to everyone (eg after you have made the joke by mispronouncing the word, say it again the correct way). Anyway, it's not a big deal (we can all always improve the things we do), and I still really appreciate your informative, generally well-presented and fun videos. 😎

Even more baffling is that he pronounces "tomato" as "to-MAH-to" but he doesn't pronounce "potato" as "po-TAH-to".
@digitalis29773 жыл бұрын
@@Ken_Brooks That's because "po-tay-to" is the Irish anglicization of the Spanish "patata" (and the origin of the influence and word in English since most of Europe shunned and abhorred the crop until well after the Irish had adopted it as a staple food) whereas "to-mah-to" is the anglicized version of the French/Spanish/Portuguese word "tomate" (to-mah-tay).

To give more context on why people used to think why tomatoes were poisonous is because pretty much all plates and dishes used to be made out of pewter and because of that the acids from the tomato would draw out the lead from the pewter causing poisonings to happen (people at the time not realising it was the lead doing the poisoning and not the tomatoes). People would also often through tomatos at prisoners hoping to poison them which is where the trope of throwing tomatoes at bad performers also originated from.
@eldo4rent7 жыл бұрын
The tomato plant is also part of the nightshade family.
@allesklarklaus1477 жыл бұрын
Everything from the tomato plant exept red tomatos contains "poison" in noticeable amounts so maybe they just ate green tomatos without cooking them or so. I would think that since they had vinegear and wine back than the acid thing must have happened with other foods too
@genghispecan5 жыл бұрын
@Darrien Breen Well...maybe... but I rather think it has to do with the fact that tomatoes, along with many other agricultural products native to the New World (potatoes, peppers, tobacco, chilies, aubergines, etc), are all flowering plants from the Solanaceae Family... otherwise known as Nightshade whose European relatives were infamously toxic and used to brew poisons and psychoactive agents. So a bunch of explorers come back from distant, strange lands with weird varieties of Nightshade that the native allegedly cultivated. No FDA, EMA, or WHO to cultivate, test, and establish that they were safe for human consumption and then disseminate that information in corner shops with little labels. Even a village idiot of the time would have no trouble seeing the physical similarities with their lethal European relatives so its no great stretch of the imagination that folks were suspicious of them. It took time and ultimately famine for people to really embrace plants from the New World as they proved to be hardy and could produce several crops in one year even if there was a terrible yield of the traditional corn crops ("Corn" is an old, old, old Old World general term for grain producing crops).

Streets and street corners featured loads of shops, many of which were pizza joints. And some of them were near the brothels. My take on this: Pineapple on pizza is fantastic, but better if the pizza is baked without it, then add the pineapple afterward, before baking the pizza for a couple minutes more to let the cheese grab a hold of the pineapple, that way the tart and crunchiness of the pineapple is less affected by the heat.

Odd for you to drop the third syllable of “Amore”. It is an Italian word, with the terminal e pronounced. Further, the song you reference, _That’s Amore_ is clearly referencing the Italian, is sung by an Italian American Dean Martin, and is certainly pronounced in the Italian fashion in said song. I know the British have a penchant for anglicizing the pronunciation of foreign words, but “That’s Amor” just isn’t a song performed by Dean Martin.

"Tomatoes were considered poisonous." Fun Fact: Tomatoes are members of the nightshade family, in the class belladonna, same as deadly nightshade. "Also potatoes." I could say the same thing. They are also nightshades, and so is eggplant. The tomatoes themselves aren't poisonous, but the foliage is insanely toxic (as are most of the class atropa belladonna's berries). It's no wonder they thought it was poisonous: tomatoes and potatoes would be among the first nightshades that Europeans ever encountered that *weren't* poisonous. By the way, I hate pineapple, so when I worked at a pizzeria that served the first Hawaiian pizza I had ever personally encountered, I was horrified and refused to even look at it. Then, one day, the chef messed one up, so free pizza. Beats paying for lunch. It instantly became my favorite pizza. I have no idea how pineapple was able to round it out so amazingly.
@sion87 жыл бұрын
Actually it was pewter plates and utensils that were used to serve food back in the day, lead would leak out because of the acidity of the fruit and absorb by the tomatoes and to say the least it would poison people. You got to remember that back in the day these foods were new and only the rich could actually afford them and so they would only be serve on special occasions, heck pineapples were used as decorations rather than as food for awhile before they became affordable to the European masses; there were people that would preserve pineapples (or make sculptures of them) just so that when people that weren't exactly extravagantly rich had fancy dinners they could offer to rent them for the event and show off.

I found this fascinating and educational. That stated, why do Brits feel compelled to aggressively mispronounce romance languages? “Amore” has three syllables. Even if one didn't know the general rule that Italians pronounce the final vowels of their words, all one would need to do would be to listen to Dino singing the damn song!

In the early '90s I went to Western Samoa for hurricane relief, we rebuilt some roads, bridges, and schools. While there, I tried Hawaiian pizza with American cheese. @@SupermanYT. Same here. Especially Panago's Tropical Hawaiian. I don't know what makes the sauce for the Tropical Hawaiian different from the sauce they usually use (I used to work at Panago, so I know it's a totally different sauce) but it's delish! Also there are lots of products that combine salty and sweet to great success. A lot of them I looked at and thought "What the heck?" But then I tried them and they're pretty good. Like Chicago Mix Popcorn (half white cheddar, half caramel corn), or chocolate covered pretzels. I never would have thought that either of those would be a good mix, but they're both really good. Then again, I don't know why I'm surprised by this. I'm Canadian. I've been dipping my breakfast sausage in maple syrup my entire life. If you haven't tried that before, DO IT! It wouldn't bother me except that people always order it when sharing pizza, in which case just order something that everyone will like pepperoni. There's always a whole box if Hawaiian pizza that nobody wants to eat because someone ordered it as half the pizza but 90% of the people won't eat it. On top of that pineapple juice leaks out all over so you can't just pick it off and eat it without it. Once it's on there and cooked it ruins the pizza.
@thegobbledygooker7313 жыл бұрын
Nobody is freaking out about anything (ok, Gordon Ramsey perhaps excepted but that's his schtick.) People are just expressing the opinion that pineapple on pizza is a garbage idea. Don't take it personally, hell I had a friend as a kid that preferred to eat dog biscuits to cookies - whatever makes you happy. Myself, I don't like it because I don't care for chunks of pineapple in any form or context. The juice has a nice flavor, though, especially for cocktails. You want to see people freak out about nothing? Say ketchup on a hot dog is pleasant and enjoyable.

I'm more interested in finding out, when did people started hating on the Hawaiian Pizza? It seems to me that this is a very recent thing. I don't recall hearing so much hate about it10 years ago. Maybe their first encounter with eating one was the pineapple used wasn't ripe or of low quality. It also sounded to me that this hate was brought about by peer pressure and they just couldn't admit to their friends that they liked it since most of them were vocal about hating on it even though it wasn't bad at all.
