Racing stripes are THE quintessential mark for performance. On everything from the Ford GT, to the Ferrari 488 GTO, to your neighbor’s beater, racing stripes mean fast. But who invented them? Was it Carroll Shelby, the man behind such striped cars as the Cobra, GT350 and Daytona Coupe? Or someone else? Join Nolan Sykes as he finds out.

Racing stripes such as these come from allied fighter aircraft in WW2 on the d-day invasion of france. They were identifications so that allied soldiers, aircraft, anti-aircraft gunners and others wouldn't shoot at their own friendly aircraft. They were on the p-51 mustang, p-38 lightning, p-47 thunderbolt and others. Airplanes ≥ cars.
@blackshadow7192

The other main origin is that stripes were actually flags. Like Ferrari was doing and actually still do. i.pinimg.com/564x/c0/1b/74/c01b7461bd01ca35b85509834ebb70f3--racing-stripes-flag.jpg images.forum-auto.com/mesimages/368537/Copie20de20Ph20Chuck20Greaminger20007.jpg

Racing stripes also served a purpose at the time when they showed up. In the 50s and 60s, cars were a lot softer and tires had higher slip angles, so a lot of the tuning of the handling of the car was done by just watching the car go around corners. Racing stripes are painted straight down the car so that an engineer or spotter watching the car go around a corner can see how the car is rotating, without worrying about being deceived by the curves of the car. But nowadays cars are stiffer, tires have lower slip angles, and computers just beam all of this data and more to your pitbox so you don't need to hike across the racetrack to find out how the car is performing...

0:13 Thats a Duesenberg guitar, named after the 1930s luxury car maker Duesenberg. They do all sorts of vintage vechile inspired details on their instruments with lots of Chrome parts, racing stripes, super chunky and sparkly metal flake paintjobs and so on. Gretsch and Italia do that whole automotive inspired guitar design thing too with Gretsch focusing on 50s Cadillac type designs and details and Italia more of a 60s Fiat/Vespa/Piaggio theme (which is a bit tacky but It’s definietely original and something I respect). Also electric guitars up until like the late 70s were painted with the same nitrocellulose paint as American cars. Both Gibson and Fender share some classic colours with American cars of the 50s(pelham blue, candy apple red, fiesta red, shell pink, daphne blue and so on). So Yea guitarmaking and car design had a connection since the earliest days of the electric guitar(about which I could go on for hours), It’s not a new gimmick

Great Video, I always enjoy your content. You missed a point about the function of Racing stripes. Engineers used them on racecars to gauge the slip-angle their drivers were carrying through turns. With the bias-ply tires in the days of yore, slip angle was quite dramatic. Very different then today's slot-car-esque handling, on modern radials with nearly zero visible slip-angle.

Didn't mention the purpose, or at least a purpose for racing stripes. They help determine if the car is going straight through the corners. If the stripes don't seem straight through the apex, the car is probably has some understeer or oversteer.

For the Nth time, I got a question, "Can I be called a car guy even if..." I don't build my car, I bought it brand new, It's still stock yet fine by me, I'm contented with around 150hp and 190Nm of torque, I still doesn't have plans of making her horse power higher, She is automatic, I only change tires if me and my car need to, I love sports cars and super cars but I am not dreaming of owning some, Though, I appreciate the beauty of cars history, I love the engineering, I take care of my car, I maintain her well, always checking her tires, wheels, engine, oils, coolant, baterry, steering, brakes, belts, lights, leaks (if there's any), washer, wipers, tools, accessories, gas, cleanliness, hoses, horn, safety, and everything in between, I love my car, and the best feeling is when I drive her. So, can I still be called a car guy?

Don't forget about the original single offset racing stripe... Cars with drivers from many different countries ment cars with drivers on either side of the car. The stripe was used to identify what side of the car the driver was if he crashed allowing for responders to not waste time trying to figure out which side he was on. These stripes were also synonymous with speed.

Stripes on guitars exist on selective "neck-thru" guitars. The most common types are the bolt-on,which the neck is attached to the body; And the neck-thru (or its set-neck derivatives) which the neck is constructed along with the center part of the body, and the wings or left and right sides of the guitar are added later. Electric guitars in the 70s to 90s aren't particular of this, I think they started doing this in the 90s,I remember Ibanez just didn't paint the center or the neck parts of the guitar and that made the appeal. Another reason is some guitars have, to save cost,have different wood construction. Like a maple or mahogany neck, then basswood left and right parts of the body. That helps lessen costs as basswood is cheaper than mahogany, while giving the same quality of the guitar. So, yeah, why stripes on these kinda guitar exists.

Let's extend the racing stripes vid into a part two...1970s (or earlier) through 90s stripes and graphics shootout or something. To see which make or model had the coolest stripes of the decade. My vote for mid 80s are Toyota truck and 4runner stripes

They forgot to mention where he got the idea from "allegedly", which was WWII fighter planes, the "legend" goes that the stripes not only looked cool, but made it easier to recognize the car on tracks like monza before they came by to put out pit signs on time and know the driver was coming into the pits. Key word is allegedly, but I like the legend.

You Tube keeps reminding me that younger people today know how to make videos, but not how to research the presented subject. Back in the 50's most American males read car magazines and by doing so became knowledgeable. Car magazine's indicated that in international auto (and other forms of racing) racing the cars were painted in the internationam assigned standard color for the car's origins. German cars were silver, Italian cars were red, French cars were French blue. But there are only so many colors so the standard for countries tied into the British Commonwealth were British Racing Green (standardized shades of green) with standardized width stripes of certain colors running the length of the vehicle. Scottish cars had white strioes, there were yellow sripes, Canada had some special detail, Australia had yellow stripes broken into short lengths (still used in international boat racing), etc. The U.S. official color was the mentioned dark blue with two 8" wide white stripes. But the Americans broke the rules and started to reverse the colors. In other words defined color shades and stripes of set widths displayed National Pride. Today the cars display the color of the sponsor. Times have chaneed. But as national pride decreased car stripes began to help crews determine which cars were approaching. So and so drove a car painted with unique stripes while the team's other car had it's unique stripe which set it apart. Etc., etc., etc. , knowledge picked up from monthly car magazines writen by and publish by people actively involved in the subject at hand. Factual knowledge was spread by the media back then, today...

So it is more like a thing of one's view... and I have to agree that stripes on a car feel to me more like a finishing touch, like two lines in the middle of a car signaling absolute balance, like if those stripes are saying: "this car is tuned to its peak performance, and to show it off these stripes are the sign of perfect balance and excelence..." I have just realised that I have a hard time explaining this, and although English is not my first language, I cannot explain it even in my mother language :D :D

I thought that off center stripes may have been a way. Identify which side of the car the driver say on when left hand drive cars competed against right hand drive cars. It would keep the emergency crew from going to the wrong side of a car after a wreck.
