Who is Aaron Keener? EXTENDED || Lore / Theory Crafting || The Division 2

At E3 this year we were given a peak at the trailers for the upcoming year 1 episodes.
The one I’m focusing on in this video is Episode 3, which appears to revolve around the main villain of the series so far, Aaron Keener, and how he has once again become a priority target for the Strategic Homeland Division.
We haven’t been given a lot of extra information on Keener in the Division 2 so far, so this announcement was well received by the community.
For now, while we eagerly wait for this to be released later on in the year, this is a recap of what Aaron Keener has been up to so far, as well as some possible ideas of what he’s been up to all this time.
If for some reason you missed my note on the previous video, this is simply an extended version of the last one, for those of you who were after a little more.

My thoughts. Keener wants to reshape the Division. He found out Elis was bed, took what he needed, and disappeared before the Hunters got him. His return could harken something dark, forcing him out of hiding to make a change. He used the other groups as a test for division agents, and to ensure loyalty and skill, while getting the threat out of the hands of those who would use it.

So I'm going to go with the last option. I understand that Keener is the anti-hero trying to do the same we do. He figured out, somehow, that the green poison was crafted, but stumbled with the possibility of fighting back and come on top himself. So instead of trying to help the govt. or follow the Black Tusk employers plans, he went his way. Interesting information about Kelso, she appears to be reckless and we still need an explanation on why she is pretty much the only surviving DC agent after they all have been picked clean by the Black Tusk for the past 7 months ingame.

you make a very good point - another thing to consider - what if he found some small clue about the NWO plans and decided to gather what was needed to make a real difference and stand a chance at fighting them off - and his plans include bringing that evidence to try and sway the division as a whole against that corruption - hard to say - because its just theory - but thats why its interesting - being theory you can look at what you know to draw possible conclusions that are entertaining to come up with.

Kelso has sketched me out from day one. Even in the recording where she gets recruited to the division, she isnt intrigued by anything, except when the recruiter mentions the POWER that she will have. This falls perfectly in line with Aarons motivations currently.

I just recently completed the side mission to find Edwards. I had no idea what I was in for. When I saw one of the first areas I thought, ‘hey, isn’t this a spawn for a Hunter? Ah, I won’t trigger it, I’ll probably get maxed out.’ As soon as I found the body and the lights cut out, I knew I was screwed. I almost s**t myself when the Hunter shocked me and started stalking towards me. Then it vanished and Manny was like, ‘oh we lost you for a sec, you good?’ I wanted to grab him by the shirt though the comms and say, ‘WTF WAS THAT MANNY?!? I DIDN’T SIGN UP TO FIGHT THE BOGIEMAN!!!’ Hands down, one of the best missions in the game so far

Man I just finished that side mission last night one of the most intense battles I ever had to face in this game so far, I pulled out my air drone on him for some help and somehow he hijacked the drone and it started attacking me damn near killed me honestly and when I couldn't move and he started approaching I thought I messed up and I was fucked lol.

I like the idea that Keener may be thinking of himself as the hero (everyone is the hero in their own version of the story after all) but I don't think he will become the actual hero of the story. He literally has too much blood on his hands... unless every single person he's killed was actually a rogue agent or knowingly working for the corrupt elements of the government. The Division's mission was to restabilize the federal government in the events of mass crisis. Both Division agents you play in the game series work closely to bring it all back, and the JTF is shown as weak and pathetic. The issue Ubisoft created was that all of the enemy factions besides the Black Tusk were victims of federal corruption from the virus, and while trying to portray them as monsters. Every faction has a reason to lash out and attack, though some do go very far.

In Episode 3 I just hope they don't ruin the buildup that they've created. We've been slowly introduced to Aaron Keener & Hunters, slowly learning how trained they are and how powerful they are. Aaron Keener is a Hunter at the end of the day, even if you don't believe it, HE is. So think about how Aaron loves playing games and telling you that youre late to a place that he was just at, basically he lets you know that hes ALWAYS two steps ahead of you. Being the first Rogue Agent / Hunter, hes gotta be STUPID strong & hard to keep up with. So, Episode 3 ( MANHUNT ) They literally cannot make Aaron weaker than a Raid Boss, he has to be stronger, smarter, smoother. His gadgets have to be waaaaaaaay better than ours, I feel we need to have a build made that isn't out there and is completely new and custom. I hope they don't ruin it and make him a one and done type thing.

If i can’t join him, im not finishing the game Firstly, it’s unclear if he is going to punish whats left of the States government and its people with the virus or target specific people. I could agree with the theory of Keener being a hunter or the hunters maybe working for him. Our first encounter with a hunter in TD2, is while finding Edwards' body. That hunter shocks us the exact same way Keener does when on liberty island. I personally can't recall any other occasion where that happened. However I'm still annoyed and baffled by the fact that the hunters are not wearing a watch. That has to mean something. Maybe because they have a different link to their source of technology. Or maybe simply because all the watches they have collected, help to boost the strength of their skills.

We be forced to capture him alive not to kill him to follow the orders from the division. For me I'll be torn I love the division but what he did to those agents in new york placed anger in me. Now, this is a very, very tiny issue I have with one of the Keener's actions. He's not a cold-blooded killer, he'll leave that for others to do. So why in that one mission we find him talking to his men that are already tied up and not a threat to him at all. He wants them to join him or die by his hands? No, that not his style. Anyone can do that. Also, he's too damn smart to take this action. People join one's cause because they believe in you. That's his method. No one joins another at the point of a gun. And if they did, could you ever trust them? I mean that's the bottom line here. TRUST. That's how he works. He points out a "Truth" that's hard to argue. Understanding it's his Truth, maybe not yours or mine, but he makes a damn good argument. An argument that could very well question our own truth.

So here are my thoughts. I think Keener is working with black tusk in some way. He may not be directly involved but I also don't think he's against them. As for the hunters. I think hunters are ex division (Before the first wave was even activated) agents who left the division or went rogue just before the outbreak and started working for the black tusk. And no Kelso can't be a traitor, for me it seems like she hates the black tusk. Just no. Sure Keener has a few valid points but he's not the hero, he's a traitor. I really hope we get to capture or kill him. :D Great video!

The hunters are a group within the division that only the president knows about that goes after rogue agents. Kinda like the "anbu black ops" in naruto. They are a form of oversight to clean up any dead agents (to prevent their bodies from being taken by the enemy.) and or rogues. Since division agents are literally the top tier of top tier someone has to make sure they are purged should they "forget" their mission statement.

With Warlords of New York's dialog in the trailer, it's making me think that Keener in his own way found out about Ellis and the plot of Black Friday and the Green Poison. Bardon refers to his boss, the one leading the Black Tusk, and it isn't Ellis. Someone wanted to put Ellis in control so when the BTs assumed reign over the US, a new dynasty would be created as a New World Order.

Agents

Im still playing the Division and a question just dawned on me. Aaron Keener was one of those missing agents gone into hiding in New York right? So he abandoned his SHD gear. Then where did that new watch come from in Division 2. Or was that even really Keener to begin with? Given the events of Div2 anything is possible. My point is why take it off if you're just gonna put another one back on. Especially if you can fool ISAC anyway.

Got too long so here's a TL;DR: I think I Aaron could be an Anti-hero and think Schaeffer could be same, and the player in D2 acts a lot like both at times depending on playstyle: I personally like the Aaron Keener may be the Anit-hero good guy in the end, like how from everything I've seen in D2 makes me think Bardon Schaeffer isn't a "bad guy" Like they both have done bad things, but nothing I'd say outright evil. Like when Wyvern basically goes insane, he's extremely against it and doesn't just destroy the antivirals (shooting down the divion helos) out of spite even though he also knows there are more out there somewhere. Seems like Aaron had the "right" idea to save people and damn the consequences and is doing what he thinks is right to end the disaster while Schaeffer does the same. Seems like he's mostly his own man and his core guys seem like decent people as well (the holo meeting April and being rather friendly as they travel between areas) just with a "bad" employer. I'm hoping that maybe there's a spot where you meat and fight both and basically convince them to help *you* not the division or the US but you the player, accomplish some tasks to help the world. The helping you because as a player agent you dont act like most division agents, you pick your own missions and battles, who to save and not, go rogue in the dark zone as you see fit but always come back to "fight the good fight" Throwing the player character is seems like the 3 all have the same idea, help people in general not one group, but are "stuck" with their current groups at this time as it's the best way to help them achieve their goals

I agree that the Edwards mission isn’t keener’s style but How is stringing a man up in a roof after killing him not a psychological power play??? It’s an attention grabber meant to tell you how fucked you are. Imagine reading the mission report and seeing that a highly skilled division agent was not only killed but completely overpowered and then strung up to the ceiling for another agent to find. Then the person who killed edwards overpowers another agent only to let them go and tell the tale. Spreading the fear. That sounds like a mental game to me

Keener was undercover he paved the way for Faye to complete her mission the one he couldn’t complete before he used to acquire agents by force now he takes them in when the time is right think about for a second Faye turned out of revenge for her sister but she turned at the flick of a switch but we all know keener WAs involved with that he recruits you when the time is right what better time to get her to join and tbh if you’re right about Kelso she has been playing both sides the entire time he takes the best of agents during the keener boss fight he compliments you the whole way always giving credit where it’s due also Kelso says don’t listen to a word he says she knows him how he operates yet she isn’t supposed to even know him like that after he’s turned she is next to go rogue but it’ll happen at the end of div2 lining up for div3 plus I gotta fun fact you know sokolove we killed another sokolove during a manhunt that was a rogue agent I see a connection going on here a very big one keener was playing everyone plus Schaffer said it himself on comms before he went through with mission you know you don’t have to do this and keener said he knows but he wouldn’t have it done any other way or plot twist we go rogue meaning our agent itself and that would be the biggest kicker of them all and I think that’ll be one of the biggest video’s you could do on this story line cuz now that you say things seem off about Kelso you made me think about our agent as well don’t we seem a bit off or maybe I’m thinking waaaay too deep

Maybe the Hunters are hired mercenaries Keener hired to kill division agents and were meant to give them a show of power like he said but decided to do it their own way. I don’t know but that’s my guess.

I know this video is old and some of your theories are on and some are off but I can’t say enough about how incredible these videos are. In the end I played the division for the story: I bought div 2 to find out what happened with keener. Sometimes I avoid your videos because I want to experience the more in game. But there is no mistaking the ambiance you add to this game with the way you tell a story and paint a picture. Here’s to hoping that our game will live on beyond div 2 and there will be more opportunities for your story telling in this game to continue. Thanks for all of your hard work. @@NGN I see you’re playing other games too. I will be checking out some of those videos such as cyberpunk as i think you’re considered a trusted source for story and lore in games. I’ve been considering a few of the games you’ve posted videos on and will check them out to see if I might find interest in those games such as cyberpunk. Have you ever considered making reviews of the games you play based on the story? I think there is a big demographic of people that appreciate story and more and is often overlooked or just an afterthought in many reviews. That might draw new viewers and subscribers that aren’t die hard players of the game but might be interested in buying based on your trusted review. I could even see an annual “top story games of 202x” on your channel. Just a thought :). Keep up the good work!

Hmm, thats not actually a bad idea. I'm going to look into that! If you're looking at new games, I suggest downloading the free demo of "Outriders". I haven't had the chance to play it myself yet, but its certainly looking promising from the feedback I'm seeing!

@@NGN yeah I would think that many of your subscribers do so because they’re in love with that particular game. But this might be another way to expand your subscriber base and pick up folks that are interested in story in general. And with the reviews you could make them spoiler-lite to make them as appealing as possible for those more casually viewing. But I’m certainly not a KZbin expert I never really did much with my channel but as a fan of your channel I can see lots of potential with what you do. Just a friendly thought from a fan :)

I enjoy your videos. Keep them coming. I wrote this when I beat the game, encountered the Black Tusk, and watched of these Division theory videos. Perhaps you'll find some of it useful for your next video. The Dark Winter experiment showed that trying to use democratic ethics and morals to maintain order in a near-anarchist world didn't work, and actually enabled those in LE-positions to take it upon themselves to push their own versions of justice once realizing the democratic ones were working. They became vigilantes-of-sorts, without any oversight or authority to limit the scope of their targets or actions. In an effort to cut the corner on the self-creation of the "would-be vigilantes" upon a real NBC-event, the government formed the Strategic Homeland Division to put their own dark arm of the law under an umbrella of authority that they could control (in theory, now proven false). By doing so, the government could choose the most patriotic of individuals who would surely want to maintain peace and order in their country. With this mentality, the government could avoid any nutcases that could potentially end up murdering innocents as wells as the unlawful, yet finding individuals with just enough moral flexibility. And by placing it as a "Directive", it granted the agents the full trust of the Presidency to carry out the mission of judge, jury, and executioner. Support some tyranny now to be able to rebuild a better tomorrow. Furthermore, it would only be a temporary stopgap until a stronger governmental, and more democratic, foothold could be established to assert authority. In essence, SHD agents are hired-guns, granted a blank slate to commit whatever atrocities are necessary so long as its in the name of maintaining order, with full exoneration from the law by presidential decree. Or so they tell the recruits, anyway. In politics, what seemed great today can turn out to be a disaster tomorrow. Is SHD a federal agency? Are SHD agents federal agents? Within a democracy, each individual is innocent until proven guilty and is awarded the right to contest which crimes that may be lodged against them (ie. a trial by a jury of your peers). Creating SHD disregards this basic right and claims that the SHD agent on-scene is (in essence) the judge, jury, and executioner, distributing law and order however he/she sees fit, in accordance to a list of offenses that was most likely devised by a team of government lawyers for agent guidance. Through agent training, they are instructed on how to assess the situation at hand and to distribute the justice that the crime calls for, which most often is "death" considering that it is what SHD was created to do: remove anything that poses a threat to the system. But by this theory, SHD is then actually the true "enemy of democracy". And the government would know that once the NBC-event was over, questions would be asked about what and who SHD is/was (if deactivated or not thereafter), who authorized them to carry out the acts they did, and whether other administrations can do so perhaps on even less threatening events (ie. launching attacks on an opposing political party because they made fun of the president). The government would need something to protect it's image, regardless of who is president, to maintain itself as the true beacon of order within the country. And the old adage of "the previous Administration" never seemed to hurt a current one. It wouldn't surprise me if the information handed to SHD-recruits on the authority that's been granted to them doesn't stand line-for-line with the written words in Directive 51, the document of its founding. I would believe that even the 'director" of the agency itself doesn't really exist, a phantom individual who exists on paper only, but can never be truly found and questioned. And I would also reckon that there is a loophole somewhere within D51 that states that everything that SHD is authorized to do ISN'T what D-51 truly authorizes it to do. "Something something each individual has a presumption of innocence something something", which SHD agents could essentially be violating at each encounter unless THEY are engaged by the enemy (self-defense). The agents, themselves, would be witness to a government-run-amok, outside of first hand eye witness accounts. But remove any and all physical evidence that shows the agency actually existed, and the population will question those accounts. Removing any video of SHD agents at work makes the accounts and witness seem fanciful, and in lieu, "rogue government employees created a rogue agency who conducted all these terrorist acts". Rick Valassi, on the other hand, could be a Black Tusk-funded operation, in an effort to undermine trust and belief in the organization in preparation for their invasion. Someone has people protecting him (per the audio recording from Division 1), or maybe even Keener is supporting him in his own preparation for a strike on them.

Welcome the Hunters, an elite unit whose mission it is to remove any and all evidence of SHD post-event, ie. technology and people. Considering their training and usage of SHD-like gear, I would reckon that the Hunters are within the SHD hierarchy, though unbeknownst to any SHD agent or commander for the below reasons. It is possible that they even know and trained with the SHD agents for whom they would eventually hunt down. It would make them more efficient and more speedily in their efforts to remove all evidence by knowing how an agent operated (ie. gear they carried, tactics and maneuvers they favored, and even locations they coveted more than others to find them when they are most vulnerable), and most importantly how to identify them. A SHD agent handing off their watch would help in hiding for a while, but eventually, the Hunters would get any and all who choose to run. Hunters would be chosen from the total pool of SHD agents available, those selected being the individuals who truly understand what the creation of SHD means for the government and the country as a whole, and may have even questioned SHD legality while in training. It would make doing the job of removing SHD easier for them because they would have already believed SHD shouldn't have existed in the first place. What happens to the Hunters after their missions are complete is a mystery, but one could see how an effective force like them would be useful beyond SHD. NEW YORK showed that the theory of SHD was a mistake, but one that the government created. By tipping its hand early on how they viewed SHD agents (as expendable guns for hire), they were destined to create an antithesis, in the form of Aaron Keener, who would rise up to combat the notion. Upon the betrayal of the Dark Zone, and seeing how easily the government discarded a handful of his brethren with ease, Keener most likely hypothesized what the government was planning on doing to all of SHD once they decided the "mission" was complete. (I say this word lightly because the true number of First Wave agents called up is not available, but considering the size of the area played, I'd say no less than a hundred active) Keener's experience as a futures trader helped in this regard, but where as other agents fled for their lives, Keener decided to fight back. And upon explaining his thoughts to the other SHD agents, themselves being within the same group that was discarded, it's no wonder that they joined his flock. However, I'm sure he hadn't reckoned on being bested, and while he is currently on the run free and clear, he's lost a number of his group and even the PMC that was behind him. Upon the government learning that Keener and other First Wave agents went rogue, something that in theory wasn't supposed to happen (another possible theory: the government would claim they went rogue AFTER the NBC-event had been tackled, allowing for them to be hunted down lawfully by any and all means), the president authorized the Hunter units to mobilize and attempt to kill the First Wave agents before word spread too far. I agree that wearing the watches surely is sending a message, but also allows other Hunters to see which agents are still on the run, including which ones they may know. But when learning of the Hunters presence in New York, Keener had his answer as to how the government was going to remove SHD following the completion of the mission. It is here that Keener realizes that he needs an ace up his sleeve (in the form of the Russian scientist and the ability to create Green Poison or variants of it) in order to level the playing field. The Hunters mission is to hunt SHD agents, regardless of which wave they are from, and so when the Second Wave was activated, they included them with the First as hostiles, potentially because they could turn at any moment and join Keener, they could go solo-rogue, and/or because the Hunters don't believe SHD should exist at all. However, with D.C. and the Black Tusk invasion, there is a moment of pause for the Hunters and even Aaron Keener. Before, Keener believed he (and those SHD agents who joined him) would be the only group capable of fighting the government on even terms (ie. Green Poision plus their training and technology). But now he's learned that he has a large and well funded rival, one that is equally trained and technologically proficient. While Black Tusk doesn't include Green Poison or its chemistry, their possession of the antivirals means that they can combat him (Keener) should he choose to release a second round of the virus. So, Keener and his organization have gone dark for now, biding its time and working on their strategy whilst recruiting and seeing what government forces and government-loyal SHD agents do to combat the new threat. Keener returned to New York because it is a city he knows well, would make for a good base of operations for his team, and can be supplied by new allies both along the coastline and overseas by ways of its ports. Additionally, if the Quarantine has indeed been broken, then the JTF mission has failed and would be ripe for Keener to move in and claim the JTF aren't capable of providing the law and order that he and his team can to the remaining populace of New York. The Hunters, on the other hand, are also watching the events happening in D.C. Seeing the invasion themselves and the threat to the country that Black Tusk pose, they stand-down from their efforts to remove SHD agents from the field. The Hunters are still apart of a group that counts some of the most patriotic, and they could see SHD as the only stopgap to the ending the Black Tusk invasion. Perhaps this is why they killed Agent Edwards, to show any and all SHD agents their intentions and capabilities: that they can take an agents life whenever they wish, or let them live for however long they choose. While their mission is to hunt and remove anything SHD related, the current threat is beyond their and the current governments own capabilities to combat without SHD present. Outside of the known rogue/disavowed agent that they encounter and remove, they ceased operations against SHD agents until the Black Tusk invasion has passed. I still believe they are hunting Aaron Keener and his group with the intent to kill. I think the next step in the franchise is to whether the agent joins Keener or vows to fight him, perhaps by becoming a Hunter. It would be an interesting next step, and how it would play out perhaps on a new portion of the island unlocked. And then, eventually unlock the whole island, which would be a massive undertaking (no pun intended). Keener still has Green Poison, and could potential build upon it with the help of the Russian scientist and Amhursts notes. And there would be government officials who would work with him, if for nothing else than to prevent Keener from re-releasing the virus. The Hunters are watching and waiting, and they will eventually upgrade their own weaponry as well, perhaps with some of the Black Tusk technology that is about. And I think the Russians would make an awesome appearance a faction (albeit temporarily), in an attempt to get back their scientist. My two cents. Cheers.

13:15 Keener finds victory in winning a fire fight before the first bullet is shot. Wouldn't that make sense then if he is specializing in psychological warfare first? If he was the Hunter, stringing up Edwards is a clear indicator that it doesn't fit his MO which throw off investigators - it's unlike him. Or maybe Keener himself radioed in to tell the Hunter to back off. Supposedly, you do kill the same Hunter later so I don't necessarily think Keener is the same Hunter.

Hell yes! After the first mission with her I was betting she would turn on the Divison. Your theory that she is with Aaron Keener makes total sense to me. My guess, extending your theory, she will be the one that leads division to Keener. We will think we are hunting him but when we find him it will either be trap and he will kill those that dont join him, or it will be the pivotal turning point where we learn Aaron has been resisting the secret bosses of black tusk and he will take leadership of division and that will be year two story content, the Divison discovering and hunting the shadow leadership of black tusk. There is a serious vacuum of official leadership in the Divison and they need a high level strategist if they hope to take on a shadow organisation that successfully wiped out the USA government and killed billions to do it.
