I have to hold back on talking about LoTR and Tolkien's Legendarium because I not only like fantasy I also like good literary criticism. Tolkien has much criticism that people ignore because they love his work so much. Tolkien's was never a fantasy nerd like most of us are but used fantasy to have fun with his true passion philology. If you look at his notes and works you see how it developed from a philological perspective. Tolkien is also long winded about everything. His friends would bring this up from time to time. Would CS Lewis say he was boring? Probably to his face as a joke but he would tell him to condense his words. This was probably always a sticking point with the two friends. Personally I believe if Tolkien would have come back to life after the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales were published he would have some choice words with his son. None of this was ever in a place where he was happy. Galadriel has 4 or 5 different storylines and some contradict. You say she is unpleasant? Well not in the 3rd age but some of the legendarium paints her as ambitious, arrogant and very defiant. That is not how we picture elves in high fantasy but it was just something Tolkien was constantly working on up until he died. I like the show so far. I am glad that they did not have the rights to the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales because I personally do not think those stories should every be put to a canon. Tolkien was constantly changing them as he changed Hobbit and LoTR. People treat them like the bible but to me anything that Christopher touched is a bit suspect. If you really want to know Tolkien more people should look into his work with Beowulf and what he contributed to English literature and Welsh. Even though you can say The Hobbit and Lord of the RIng are by far the most amazing things he has done he always believed he wasted 20 years working on that and fell behind in his philology work. Some think Tolkien was dismayed at the cult status his fantasy work took with the public. I know with the wealth he generated he was rather regretful that he did not retire earlier in life. This is why I think people put more of their own fantasy and expectations of high fantasy on the back of Tolkien and that is not really what he wanted. Still I enjoy my Tolkien. I am just not as dogmatic as everyone I see.

I find it hilarious that she spent hundreds of years scouring middle earth searching for Sauron, yet as you point out she didn’t check the south lands, and she didn’t once bother twisting the symbol (that was “branded” into her brother) sideways to see that it matched the section of the map she was looking at daily.

Not just that. Remember in episode 1 Galadriel said the Mark of Sauron was left for the Orcs to follow. So the Orcs (wellknown for their cartography, I guess) were supposed to figure out the mark equalled a map of the Southlands, but Galadriel didn't? And if it's the mark to point Sauron's followers to the place they were to gather as plan B.. why put that mark on the brother? It's all... not thought out with enough care :/

I really like your discussion at the end of the episode and, after watching a lot of reviews where people were simply hating, you actually bring some very valid points. For me this show is a 7 so far and I watched many 3 or 4 shows just cause they were fantasy, so it doesn't really matter. On the other hand I know that other people might just drop it after episode 1 and that's a problem not only for Lord of the Rings but for Wheel of Time too

I'm glad that they mentioned Anarion we don't know where he really is but that alleviates my concerns because he is the one who builds Minas Tirith that we see in the movies. And they do go to middle earth they have shit tons of colonies that's why they were able to found two kingdoms there Gondor in the south and Arnor in the north they just don't carry elves anymore. And most in Numenor hate the elves because they are jealous of their immortality it has nothing to do with Sauron later when he is captured by them and is imprisoned there, he manages to sweet talk the king into invading valinor to force the gods into giving them immortality, which then creates a cataclysm. And I think isildur is in his 40s here and dwarves live a little over 200 so like Numenoreans Gimli died at 262

All the characters are engaging in their own ways, even the (for now) smallest side characters like the Blackwood kid. One of the creators said that they were hoping to make 50 hours of content, which would be roughly 5 seasons. The way I think about it is that all of season 1 is going to be build up and setting the pieces in place. The game/ story won't really kick off until season 2 and we will see the forging of the rings in the finale of season 1. Halbrand will be used to either "break bad" and take men to Sauron's army, or will die a martyr, redeeming himself, but not his people. My off the wall theory is that he will take some men "north" and his progeny will become the Rohirrim. I imagine that the Easterlings settled in the south after they were defeated and that is why they are the southlands in the show. I think the Numenor has already been in contact with Sauron and have been influenced by him, but don't know it was Him... yet. I have other theories as well, but this is getting WAY too long. hahaha

I find my self enjoying all of this show in much more ways than some reactors and people online, that confuses me when someone thinks its a "bad" kind of slow (I respect it and in some ways even understand the reasons, but I just can't relate). Idk if I'm this hyped because I see where this could be going towards, but I just love it. I love the possibilities in the things that we know from the lore AND the possibilities of the storylines that are completely original. I love to dig into the existing lore and try to figure out who can be who, and where the small choices in the show can lead to become the big stuff we know happens in the source material. And some people seem to not get that this show is a mistery, not a pure adventure (like the LOTR movies and books). There are lots of questions to be answered, there is investigation. Galadriel is investigating, Arondir is investigating and Nori is in her own little mission there and since I LOVE misteries, this grabs me far more than House of the Dragon, for example, which for me is coming as an expensive and R rated brazilian telenovela/soap opera, where the interesting things are who f**ks who, who will marry who and who will get the prize. I also LOVE the "one note" insufferable arrogant Galadriel, because I am SURE that, if they get it right, this is a REALLY fascinating character arc for her: come from this grieving angry arrogant warrior to that peaceful, calm and noble queen. Arondir also has a painful journey established in this episode. And I simply love that we are still figuring out the real goals of people like Halbrand or Miriel (who has two different storylines in the books and seems to me she is playing along with the Numenorian to not give control of the real to the unfaithful). And we have the one big question: WHERE is Sauron and where he will come from? So, for me, it's not slow, it's a good mystery drama, not not an action show yet - even though the action we had is amazing.

Regarding Galadriel, to be fair, from her point-of-view she's been relentlessly hunting Sauron for centuries without rest. The one who murdered her brother and the symbolic inheritor of the evil that ruined her home and childhood, and she's been gaslit by her own people that there's nothing wrong even though she knows there is, and essentially retired away so no one has to deal with her. She has no one backing her, everything is going wrong, and now she's stuck on an island that seemingly hates her. This isn't Galadriel at her prime, she's at her lowest, most fucked up state. In a way, all she has is Sauron.

@ryankwon87852 жыл бұрын
I think she will gradually become the Galadriel we know over time through the help of her new allies and her eventual marriage to Celeborn. It is likely the show will transition Galadriel from a brash warrior to a kindhearted spiritual leader. I've seen this type of character transition in many stories. In the Simarillion, Sauron placed Galadriel as his top enemy target list which was never explained why by Tolkien since Galadriel never participated much in the Second Age aside from being an elvish spiritual leader. The tv show is likely giving a reason as to why Sauron hates Galadriel as a difficult enemy to defeat.
@manjiimortal2 жыл бұрын
Them adapting the second age is at the same time a blessing and a curse, for the exact same reasons. It was the least developed age that Tolkien wrote about as the 1th age gets the vast majority of the Silmarillion, the 3th age gets the Hobbit and the LOTR, while the 2nd age gets about 10 pages on the appendixes of Return of the King (including the chronology of the 2nd age), and whatever information that is dropped during the LOTR books. This leaves them a lot of space for creating their own stories, since the events written by Tolkien are so spare that you need to come up with your own ideas to fill in all the blanks (notably, very little at all was written about what the Elves and Dwarves were up to during that time, as Tolkien focused on the rise and fall of Númenor), but you still need to try to follow on whatever was written, and when you're trying to compress events to a ridiculous level (Celebrimbor dies on SA 1697, and Númenor falls on SA 3319, which the show is setting up to happen at around the same time, for example) that becomes a really hard act to balance. The 2nd Age was written by Tolkien in a purely Historical Chronical manner, and that doesn't lend itself to adaption at all, and trying to tell a story that spans, in this case, thousands of years of events certainly doesn't lend itself to a TV format, it works much better in written form. It's the exact same problem anyone would have it they were allowed to try to adapt the Silmarillion, as the story is still for the most part told in an Historical Chronical manner covering tens of thousands years from creation to the end of 1st age, though you do have event happening within it that could be much more easily adapted to TV or movies, namely the Three Great Tales of the Silmarillion: Beren and Lúthien, The Children of Húrin, and The Fall of Gondolin .

One of the downsides of Elven immortality is (I think) that they can be VERY slow to change, adapt, or move on from certain things; Elendil even alludes to this when talking to Galadriel about how she reminds him of his kids. She may be a few thousand years older than him, but she is not nearly as mature, because she still has a massive chunk of life left to live (technically forever lol). Trauma like the kind she endured (through centuries of war and the death of her brother) can definitely make someone act impulsive, rude, and just downright angry, and while a human might deal with and move on from that trauma over the course of an 80 year lifetime, it takes her wayyyy longer.

Excellent analysis at the end there, I agree with virtually everything you said. The production value of this show continues to be excellent overall, the cast is very good in the various roles they're given. That said, yes, the Galadriel issue persists. She's at least over a thousand years old in the show (even with the huge time crunch). And yet all that experience so far hasn't been apparent in her behavior (aside from showcasing her superior martial abilities). Having Elendil (the highlight of this episode for me) and Halbrand be so much wiser and more measured than her feels wrong. I get that the writers are trying to convey that she's consumed by her need for retribution and eliminating a gigantic threat, but if that comes at the expense of all her other qualities, then we lose so much of what makes her one of the most prominent and respected Elves in the whole legendarium. The writers want to create space for her to grow in future seasons, but I fear they've sacrificed a bit too much of her in the process... I'm gonna keep watching this show because despite the vaious issues at hand, I'm still curious to find out where this 1st season is headed, and how they've reconfigured the timeline of events given the limited rights they have. I'm invested in Nori and Elrond's stories, and still intrigued by Galadriel's journey as well. Fingers crossed the ship will right itself as we go along.

My thaughts: Cate Blanchett's Galadriel is Peter Jackson's Galadriel. She was wonderful cast for the role. And that Galadriel is over 8.200 years old. AND - very much screentime she has not. She has a few scenes, is wonderful and that's it. And ROP's Galadriel? Should she/her char be/act in the same way those 3.200 years before like her older version? In that show she's nearly 5.000 years old. So - should she make a copy of Cate's Galadriel? Then everybody would complain about that. I agree with some other opinions here. To have some kind of carnival licence to make her character is blessing and curse at the same time. I like the show. :) My favourite chars right now are: Elendil, Bronwyn, the stranger, Nori and yes, even Galadriel. Just liking kind and nice chars is somehow boring...

Also, I'm thinking "The Stranger" is a Blue Mage, as has been brought up by many people. Tolkien changed the lore regarding them later in his life, and they come to Middle Earth in ~year 1600 of the second age, tasked with travelling to the east and circumventing Sauron, and to search out his hiding. When he first meets Nori, he's muttering the words "mana ure", which could possibly mean "hand of heat", which contrasts beautifully with Saurons description of having a hand that is "flame unquenched"

Have you stopped to think that was the intention for the character to show the journey from headstrong and vengeful to wise and experienced? This Galadriel is a thousand years or more younger than the one we see in our beloved LoTR. Of course we don't like her crappy attitude, her arrogance, her privileged demands, she's too blinded by her own destructive path of revenge. It seems clear they wrote it this way to show that she wasn't always what we see in LOTR. We're supposed to dislike who she is now because she has lessons still to learn. That being said, I get why you dont like her, we're not supposed to. Duh. Also, a HotD comparison? Really? HotD is a different type of fantasy. It and its predecessor are detailed and grounded in political intrigue with 9 great houses and all the banners under them. It's great. Tolkien's stuff is all about the higher view, good vs. evil. It doesn't get in to all the minutea and moves made by 9 dfferent factions with countless bannermen underneath them. The comparison doesn't work. Rings vs. similar would be Wheel of Time, etc. Again, of course the writing is going to be(or seem) more intelligent in a GoT or HotD, it's a different type of work. Your expectations are predictably going to fall short if youre' comparing GoT/HotD to classic high fantasy. Not a fair comparison.

Wow, what a lovely diatribe to start the morning, Cuddle Buddee…are you an Amazon employee? 😉 Have you ever stopped to think that my post above was simply MY opinion? You don’t need to agree, it’s simply my opinion and I’m entitled to it just as you’re entitled to yours. To me, this Galadriel is being WRITTEN as selfish and arrogant, and I don’t like it - I don’t like HER. Again, MY opinion. Yes, I know we all change as we grow, and elves live long lives, and yes this is thousands of years before The Hobbit takes place, much less The Lord of the Rings, yada, yada, yada. That being said, THIS show has had MILLIONS of dollars spent in its production, and yet the writing suffers; the CGI of Numenor, Khazad Dum, etc. was absolutely awe-inspiring and breathtaking, however the writing is disjointed and choppy at best. There is too much going on without enough of a focus on what they want US, as viewers, to focus on. The casting (particularly Elrond - I don't get that characterization), the costuming, character design, again IMHO, I don’t quite care for and I don’t find captivating. And before anyone gets a bee in their bonnet, it’s NOT anything to do with any colors…the cast could be purple or green for all I care. It’s honestly the writing I find fault with. And, YES, a House of the Dragon comparison…it is ABSOLUTELY a fair comparison. It is a different type of fantasy, but fantasy nonetheless. So why compare them, you ask? Because the WRITING is absolutely STELLAR in HotD, while it’s tepid, at best, in LotRtRoP… That is why I compare them. The reason they made this show is to make their own 'GoT' for Amazon, and Amazon folks admitted that. In that, so far, they have failed. Again, I’m not giving up on the show, but I’m not in a hurry to pull it up to watch either. It’s disappointing because I was VERY excited about this show, and it’s just a lukewarm feeling about it now. I have a reminder in my phone to be sure that I am home to watch HotD as soon as it is released to stream, and I usually watch it a couple of times again later in the week. I watch LotRtRoP at some point on Friday after its release late in the evening on Thursday, and then will watch it again as well, but I’m just not as excited about this show as I once was. If it was exciting and the storyline/writing were engaging, I would stay up late and go to work a zombie the next day to watch it, no doubt in my mind. It may yet get there, but it isn’t there yet. I do have high expectations when it comes to Tolkien’s work, and I freely admit that. Simply though, I watch these shows to be entertained. Bottom line, it’s just my opinion. You do you, Boo Boo. Have a great week! 😊

Some crimes are punished harsher than others. My impression that any rule violation would warrant being left behind to them, though I suppose it's also at the discretion of the leader.

@@Gothicsock The contradiction is the problem. They are either leaving those who can't keep up behind for the survival of the group, or, as they keep saying, they stick together, and never walk alone. You can't have both.

@@Surethien I think “nobody walks alone” is more an abomination to literally never go off by yourself and a reminder of safety with the caravan. This is hundreds of years (a thousand?) before the three different lines of “hobbits” settle into the Shire and become one comfy little society.

@@AnotherScribbler Possibly, but that would mean they basically chant the same thing again in answer: Nobody goes off-trail (stick with the caravan) nobody walks alone (also stick with the caravan, rather than: then we'll take care of you). Gosh that'd make that horribly unimaginative chant even worse. Even if it's fully your take though, that still would leave us with the same contradiction: Stick with the caravan and we find safety with eachother vs oh but if you sustain an injury, ach well, too bad, try to keep up or die. Does nobody has a spare son or daughter to help you pull your cart? Nobody will let you ride on their cart if you can't walk? Nope, just... ah shame, farewell, we'll remember your demise in a poignant and sad ceremony next year. These writers need to hit story points and emotional highs and lows. But they don't bother to connect it all logically. Well I say don't bother, I suspect they're incapable.

I appreciate the honesty in your reviews. And even though I think you may be a touch too forgiving, I have to credit you guys for trying to stay positive about the Rings of Power. I enjoyed your videos since I found you reviewing the Wheel of Time show and applaud the bookclub that followed. I'm a huge fan of those books. Needless to say I'm also a fan of Tolkien's work, but unfortunately as far as this show goes, I've lost faith in it turning out good. I long since stopped expecting them to honor Tolkien or the lore, the trailers and press ensured that. But I'm a big fantasy fan and I had at least hoped we'd get a decent fantasy story. I never expected to be just... bored. It's pretty, sure, but without better writing, this show won't survive. Their main character Galadriel is indeed a huge problem. I've no doubt the goal is to have her grow from impatient and angry to serene and wise, but even a character with flaws has to be written in such a way that people will still like her or at least care about what happens to her, and most of us just don't. Also, you cannot have her act like a self-centered teenager at (at least) 2000 years old, while she's also a great leader and the commander of the armies. That's just not believable. The Harfoots talk a big game about sticking together, but then turn around and leave you behind if you got hurt. Don't worry though, they'll mention you in the next ceremony, where they will proclaim to wait for you. That's just inconsistent. The Elves kept watch for hundreds of years over the Southlanders, because they once supported Morgoth. But from their watchtowers they didn't see the swath of destruction the Orcs cut through the landscape? And keep in mind the Orcs were close enough to attack a village about day away and the Elf garrison itself. That's just silly. The dialogue is trying very hard to be high fantasy, but they're out of their depth if the best they can come up with for the naval society is: "the sea is always right" and: "nobody goes off-trail - nobody walks alone" for the nomads. No, I'm sorry, episode 3 broke me, I'm done. I have absolutely no doubt that the cast and crew gave it their best, but those with the power to make decisions, just didn't manage to create a good show, let alone something reminiscent of the works of professor Tolkien.

I agree it’s a lot, I hope the various storyline’s meld soon. However, I am enjoying each episode. I’m okay with a grand scale type story, but as long as they handle it well. For the Harfoots, I believe their culture is born out of fear. The mother’s rant about basically keep your head down, you are insignificant, you will get killed, tells a lot of about their community. So when something happens during migration, they just push on because how could such small weak folk possibly do anything courageous? It’s better to keep moving and stay alive. As far as being at the back of the caravan that might have been political maneuvering. Since he is injured, the elder was probably looking for an excuse to move them to the back of the caravan, to keep the others from being out in danger by that family holding the group up from his injury. Galadriel, yeah. I’m still wanting to stick to my guns that she has a bit of an Ahab problem. Because we do know she survives, I think there is gonna be a serious break and then she finally matures. The way Galadriel was in the throne room, i didn’t like it either, but I remember something from another series about first impressions. If you’re introduced as royalty they’ll always see you that way; if you’re introduced as a beggar (castaway), that’s all they’ll see you as. But I really want Galadriel’s character to develop. Love yalls reaction as always. Can’t wait for more WoT content.

It’s interesting, because… I went in expecting something kinda with the pacing of the movies, but what we’re getting is the tv version of a giant doorstopper fantasy series. And that’s great as far as I’m concerned, even if I’m not going to want that from all (or even most) shows. Also, wasn’t Numenor already tipping away from the elves due to there being a growing feeling of jealousy about the “curse/gift of man”? Could have sworn that was independent of Sauron’s later influence, just used by him.
@AnotherScribbler2 жыл бұрын
Also, elves live forever… but they also do have a concept of immediacy. She thinks that every minute the evil of Sauron exists the bigger the threat is, and the more her brother’s legacy is failed. To put it another way: To hunt the threat for a thousand years is no big deal to her, but to let it possibly grow a moment longer than necessary is unacceptable.

I think we just have to be patient with this show. It's planned for 5 seasons so I think we can expect some good character development and the different storylines to eventually merge. It's interesting what they are doing with the Halbrand character. I got the impression from the episode that they are trying to play him up as a potential candidate for Sauron (manipulative, good orator, interest in smithing), but I think its more likely that he will become either one of the Nazgûl or the king of the army of the dead after breaking the oath to Isildur. I am also excited to find out more about the stranger. I hope he is one of the blue wizards. I frankly do not understand what they are trying to do with the harfoots. Unless they are quite literally going to migrate to and create the shire in this show their storyline seems a bit pointless and contributes quite a bit to the bloat of this show.

The timeline of the story is really strange because there is a chunk of Numenor history the show doesn't have access to. And so I think they may have compressed some of the story which may explain some hostility. "Elf-Friends' have become few on the Island by this time except in the 'faithful'. Also men were most seen as servants to the Elves in the first age. True friendships were exceptions in the stories. And her family had some arrogance that likely tempers down over time. I enjoyed the episode for the most part except for the Warg. That was bad. Which when you see how gorgeous all the location designs are, how this got approved is beyond me.

They have actual knowledge, both about tv adaptation, medieval studies and Tolkien studies and they have this amazing show here on youtube called Rings and Realms which I think both of you would benefit from, for example, these "coincidences" that seem to be bothering you guys is a known force in the Tolkien legendarium, the Divine Providence of Eru Ilúvatar, better exemplified and discussed in The Hobbit by Gandalf, but also by Galadriel, this same episode when she says there is no Fate, but a bigger force moving them together, also Nori when she says she feels she was supposed to help the Stranger, in another body of work I would agree that this would be convoluted, but not here, here it pays homage to Tolkien's previous work and the mythos he built, I do think seeking info in the right place would help put things in perspective, the show is excellent, it leaves personal opinion generally aside and focus on analising the themes and the adaptation in a more professional way. I am not bothered Arondir is black. Heck, that does not even conflict with canon. There are sylvan elves distributed all over Arda. There might be even 'desert' dark elves (as in tribes that escaped from Cuivenien from the call of the Valar) who might be very dark skinned (not because evolution reasons, but there is a certain 'tuning' to the music of the world with the elves, and the place they live in does affect them, that's a problem when magic starts fading out in 2nd age). I am bothered because he has no ethereal quality on him at all. He just looks a normal guy with vulcan/romulan ears. They are not taller than humans, they talk, behave and act like humans. In lieu of your comment regarding flow, the time with the elves and orcs was a complete waste of time and could have easily been done without. The elves started captured, fought, and ended captured without learning anything besides how they missed the orcs digging a huge swath of a trench through the land. The writing really suffers here too, because the orcs can't stand light, so why dig at the surface and/or during the day. Also, where the hell does all that cloth come from that covers the trench, and where does all those tons of dirt go without having mounds on the surface?! This is only one example of how poor the writing is, unfortunately. With that said, like you, I'm still watching with hope. At this point, given where the story is, I really, really hope Galadriel goes down a dark path to be broken and humbled. With regards to your comment about the die hard fans being upset and regarding sexism and racism. Most of the accusation regarding those are unwarranted from Amazon officials. I also expected to see Numenor in Season 2 or 3, that there was going to be a build up to it. I am not loving Galadriel, not because she is a warrior, because they are making her incompetent and her narrative is so unclear. I think they should have made her a Yoda type figure that the other heroes sought out to glean wisdom and insight from. So there are things I am certainly enjoying, but at this point it is really hard to care about much. I really hope that the next few episodes start making the storyline so clear.
