Just look at blessington lakes, one of our largest lakes and not a wild trout to be seen, constant netting of pike and perch destroyed this fishery, and for who? Yes the Dublin trout anglers! They stock it every year now with rainbow trout which are great food for the pike since they banned pike netting, result is big pike and no wild trout. As a trout fisherman I detest pike netting, pike control pike numbers better than any net. It only took a couple of ignorant trout angling clubs to destroy thousands of acres of water and they are intent on doing the same all over the country, the result will be no fishing for anybody including these trout anglers, with no pike to keep all species under control the whole thing falls apart, reap what you sow because it’s not far away at this stage, with the added pressure of pollution, netting in estuaries, poaching, and salmon farms destroying sea run trout with lice the end is very near. And they’ll blame the pike. Enjoy your stocked rainbows gentleman for that’s all you’ll have in future.

unfortunately here in northern ireland this is the same with tonnes of foreigners taking everything from lakes including tiny young fish!!! if fish arent left in to continue breeding then there will be no fish in that water and they are to blame. not all foreigners are poachers but 99% who have been caught have been. its sad times :(.

The locals always know better than the fishery board but they never listen...they keep making the same mistakes over and over again....the department of fisheries has some good people in their midst....but most of the rest wouldn't be kept a month if they worked in the private sector....

myself and several friends all from wales would come over to ireland every june/july for a week , as the irish coarse fishing was far ahead of what we could catch in wales . this lasted untill about the late 1990s , when we kept on seeing year after year huge reduction s not only in coarse fish we caught , but fishermen coming over on the ferrys also , we could nt organise a competition between our selves AT THE END OF THE WEEK as there was t enough foreign fishermen now to take part !! and as the welsh government has started promoting and stocking welsh coarse fishing we can stay at home now . what THE IRISH TOURIST BOARD and GOVERNMENT needs to ask them selves is a very very important question , who SPENDS THE MOST MONEY a TROUT fisherman , or a COARSE fisherman ??, the answer is obvious !! same old thing everywhere , SNOBBERY IN THE FISHING WORLD !! .

Here in Germany the main problems are pollution of the water by farmers and changes of the way our rivers flow. Many fishermen (mainly older ones) release still not enough fish and kill them instead😕 but thats by far less damage than the commercial fisherys do to the fish populations. What happens here in Ireland sound also pretty bad
@ManicMindTrick8 жыл бұрын
You Germans are always welcome to Sweden where we have mostly unpolluted and even in some rare cases totally unfished waters full of trophy trout, char, greyling, pike and perch. Check out the channel free water pictures.

Well done for highlighting this I can't see anything changing though unless something dramatic happens eg. the head of the fisheries board found dead in a Gill net with a pike locked onto his tackle

yep same on lough conn and cullen...check out videos by kenneth sloan...im originally from uk and for years you would see prime irish roach and bream on bolton fish market and im sure that wasnt the only one either..no wonder the coarse fishing collapsed aswell leaving the angling tourist business ...its criminally insane

He's right about trout fishermen getting their own way all the time. That's why there is no water sport in Ireland. No water skiing or jet skis allowed in westmeath at the request of trout fisherman, despite hundreds of square kilometers of lakes. A few rich landowners who donate to political parties and want nothing but trout fishing get to dictate what the rest of us do...

it's sad because every body is thinking just because you are forigen it means you gonna take all the fish wich is not true many forigen fisherman come from parts of the world to Ireland because they know it's a good place to fish witch is good for b&b etc it's really only a small percentage of forigen people taking all the fish

matthew cracut you say a small percentage? There’s stretches of the royal canal alone that are more or less empty now compare to 15 years ago when they were stuffed with fish, plenty of lakes empty also compared to a few years ago-it’s doesn’t matter if it’s a small percentage because they’ve made a massive negative impact here with regards to fish stocks. I’ve witnessed and reported what goes on and nobody seems to give a shit.

Pike are native to Ireland - Gill netting is wrong and will hurt the tourist economy. They should rather see that pollution and impairment of spawning streams stops, this will help trout and salmon! Look at the lakes and streams in Canada & Alaska - trout and salmon live in the same waters as pike and muskie - this nonsense has to stop! Scientific paper proving that Ireland has it's own pike stock that is genetically different from mainland Europe: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4238397/
@underwaterireland7 жыл бұрын
It will hurt the ecology first of all because pike are very important part of it. I've done lots of tests and pike ALWAYS preferred white, shiny (coarse) fish to anything else including trout and they are always were picking dead, dying, sick, weak fish and never healthy fish. No pike - no healthy new generations including trout. They should introduce pike to those lakes not to kill it.

You are absolutely right man! This gill netting of pike is the delusional idea of a few old men in the IFI. Their arguments for doing this don't have any scientific base. These lakes have been fine for the last hundrets of years, now stocks are declining and they think it's suddenly the pikes fault? Thanks for showing the people that this is happening!
