Best APS-C cameras? For still photography, at least when neither AF speed nor mirrorlessness are the top priorities, that's pretty easy, though it may not be an immensely popular opinion: Pentax, seriously. For photos, I just bought a Sigma sd Quattro a month ago. It's amazing. Absolutely amazing. It's not a camera for unskilled photographers though, and unfortunately it uses the dying Sigma SA mount that nothing but legacy M42 lenses can adapt to. The upside is medium format acutance in an APS-C body, plus the IR filter is removable. The Foveon Quattro sensor is so much more crisp than any Bayer sensor!
@rlwin54493 жыл бұрын
I was thinking to buy used one a couple of week ago. Sadly as you said only SA mount lens can be mounted that makes me stop buying the camera as I have only sigma EF mount lenses and don't want to invest in new lens.
@JodyBruchon3 жыл бұрын
@@rlwin5449 It's worth it, frankly. I bought a kit (w/30mm f/1.4 lens) for $899 directly from Sigma, then got a used Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 lens from KEH Camera for $499. If I did it again, I'd just get the body alone and the 18-35mm lens, because the 30mm's only advantage for me is the size and weight reduction; I don't know that the IQ is better. This camera with the 18-35mm is a great camera for most scenarios where you have at least a sliver of time to set up the shot. The focusing is slow, but it tends to be very accurate. Running around in P mode with plenty of light is no problem. It sucks to not be able to adapt other lenses, but I've learned over time that the vast majority of my photos end up shot with a variety of standard zooms (Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8, Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, Pentax Q 02 Standard Zoom 5-15mm f/2.8-4.5, the Panasonic LX7's 24-90mm equivalent f/1.4-2.3, etc.) anyway.

Actually, the Fringer + Sigma 18-35 performs very well. Even in stills mode. Only downside is the stupid size and length. Whoever wrote that question around 5:00. If your aim is to do controlled shots when you're behind the camera and manual focusing, 18-35 + tokina 11-16 is decent. AF work, just go Sony, and forget about colour grading and moving the camera cos of the jello. Just tripod shots forever.

Question: I use my Canon 5D Mark IV for 1-3 hours long interviews (genealogy), indoor/studio vlogging (work), webcam (work) and short-films (a hobby, and no one cares, I know). I've filmed in 8-bit, C-Log (it does offer higher dynamic range) and 1080p. My biggest issues have been the 30 min video limit (but manageable), lack of flip-screen (I've used the Canon app) and too big 4K videos and the camera might overheat. Since I use my camera semi-professionally, what would be a sensible camera with a budget around C$2000-2800? Alternatively, I could simply keep my Canon 5D and use the money to travel to Mauritius.
@JodyBruchon3 жыл бұрын
Panasonic GH5s plus Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 lens, and Sigma 16mm f/1.4 for very low-light situations. That's my go-to pro video setup. Yes, the sensor is half the size in both axes, but that's not a bad thing. You don't realize how much you fight the shallower depth of field on large sensors until you try micro four-thirds. Also, no record time limit, and you get access to hybrid log gamma, 10-bit 4:2:2 output options, and even raw video over HDMI if paired with (I think) an Atomos Ninja V. I just shoot 3840x2160 8-bit 4:2:0 most of the time for workflow speed and simplicity. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. I also have articles I've written on the sensor size subject if you are interested. My email is easy to find if you want a more direct conversation. KZbin censors URLs and other things so much now that I can barely talk about anything in depth.

@@JodyBruchon Interesting. Interesting because somewhere in my thinking process I've dismissed Panasonic. I think it's because of its autofocus issues, decreasing MFT trend and the GH5s has become an old model. With this price, there are new alternatives, e.g. Fujifilm. Now that I revisited GH5s, it does confidently check all requirements. However, my concern is if it's a smart long-term choice for its price. Fujifilm appears to be a more attractive ecosystem and for the same price, I could get X-T4, or the much cheaper X-S10, which is a better hybrid camera, although GH5s seems to be better in video (no 30 min limit and small overheating issues with 4k 24p). In any case, a great recommendation, I just need to think mainly of its price and age.
@JodyBruchon3 жыл бұрын
@@Pikseli007 Panasonic released new firmware recently for several cameras that fixes the focus issues. MFT isn't going anywhere. They still sell the Panasonic G7 brand new and at the same price it was several years ago. The thing is that Panasonic packed so many features into its MFT bodies that Canon, Nikon, and others intentionally crippled out of theirs that they've been better for a long time now. The G7 kit could be bought for $500 at times and had focus peaking while the Canon T6i/750D still didn't have it, though the T1i through T5i plus Magic Lantern enabled the software-disabled focus peaking feature, proving Canon cripples their hardware. The low weight and not constantly fighting excessively shallow depth of field are also nice. The G7 was my first 4K camera and I've shot professional videos on it; the GH5s is like a G7 on steroids (but unfortunately heavier as a result). I recently posted a video on my channel that's a 100-minute video of me walking with my GH5s and Sigma 16mm f/1.4 from sunset to moonlight on a Zhiyun gimbal. It's completely unedited 4K 60 fps 8-bit 4:2:0, I uploaded the footage straight out of camera. KZbin compression takes a toll, but you can still see that the combo I used practically sees in the dark. The thing about MFT is that it's constantly dismissed by people for its sensor size (why would I want a SMALLER sensor?!) but once you use it, you wonder why you lugged all that heavy awful stuff for the bigger sensors. The vast majority of photos on my photography page of my website are Panasonic G7 pictures. There are plenty of photos on DPReview for MFT cameras. Panasonic also just released several brand new MFT bodies. If MFT was dying, they wouldn't bother doing that. Mirrorless full-frame is not much better than the equivalent DSLRs; the bodies can be slimmer, but the optics can't really shrink. The gear is heavy, the battery life sucks (my GH5s can record 4K60 for almost 2 hours on one battery), the sensors overheat, the DOF is often way too shallow for video work. I see it as both a natural evolution and a fad. There are advantages, yes, but I don't need them. If I was doing astrophotography all the time, I would want full-frame. I've even seen sever "Sony A7-something vs Panasonic GH5s" videos where Sony fans are claiming it wins in the comments, yet the GH5s resolved far more detail on clothing and bridges and such.

I’d have to hand it to the Sony line. Its kind of the Toyota Camry of APS-C at this point. Always starts, gets your fat ass to your job and back and a few failed dates too. Infotainment is dated, but you won’t mess with it much. Its a known quantity without quirky art major bullshit.

Kasey you’re the best you that I’ve ever seen on KZbin, keep it up! I’m shooting on a Canon M50 MII. I buy really cheap seats at sports games and would love a EF or EF-S mount lens with grotesque zoom ability. EF-M lens have nothing in the zoom category that’s worth the coin. I’d be thrilled to see sweat beads from the nosebleed seats I’m in, but of course affordable enough to afford bad seats at events. Any recommendations? I like your shirts.

Hi, yes I have subscribed, a long time ago and yes I do watch every single video of yours, I don't know why, looser! Just kidding but listen, I am still a Nikon shooter and that since... don't ask. So, please do include that brand as well because you know that it's a brand of choice for millions since that year 1959 in Philadelphia. No brand has ever influenced the photography like Nikon with their F- mount and we are still using it today professionally with all that epic glass which is since the beginning compatible. This no oder brand has offered to us photographers and yes, my D850 or D780 is going to blow, even video wise many others out of the water without starting to spread smoke signals, you know what I mean! And AF, come on , it's gonna chase squirrels and rabbits into their holes 🤣 Consistency is the issue here and yes, I am using other brands too, like Fuji or Sony but only the smaller ones... I hope you will respond... oh, you are not?😢😫Best regards from Croatia! P.S. Oh yes... Nikons last long in bed as well, 2400 shots for sure, compete, Sonyandothers... 🤣🤣🤣🤪🤪🤪

it depends on the budget. and how important is af for you? do you need ibis? the a6400 is still pretty good (nice af), but has rolling shutter while filming.

Yep. But its dying bc i cant buy a lens. There are 2 lenses i could buy for the camara i just got and none of them are available. Fuji really messes up not allowing 3rd party glass to cover demand. Now in this chip crissis it is showing big time.

You had problems with Pocket 2 autofocus? Must be your device because I have no AF issues with both my Pocket5 1 and Pocket 2. Plus they can focus sharply on close objects which neither the Action 1 or GoPro can do.
