Tim - great video. Completely agree with you take... the metrics explosion potentially is concerned. The other one - and I'm biased, of course - is data modeling skills in Tableau have just become much more critical. Although it typically led to poorly performing dashboards, Creators could hide a lot of the problems with poor data models with calculations and tricks with chart creation. There is no hiding from a bad data model - and the poor business decisions it could lead to - in Tableau Pulse.

Thanks for sharing your perspective, Tim. As usual, it's very spot-on! The proliferation of many metrics (or related permutations) could become a governance nightmare if not handled properly. IMO, it would be another front where it'd be required to find a happy middle ground between providing that self-sufficiency of letting some critical consumers ("super users") create those derived metrics for their respective teams or organizations based on the Metric Definitions that creators should still manage to prevent or minimize the multiple 'definitions' of the same thing.

Really excited to see how I can end up using Tableau Pulse and dbt to control the data modeling and metrics!

Totally agree that there are a number of hygiene issues that should be addressed in the systems that are subjugated to the big ticket, shiny stuff, the sort of things that frustrate you when you open and close 10 Dashboards and 5 Prep flows every day and have to endlessly log in, for example.

Tim, could you elaborate on Tableau electron? first time that I am hearing about this and I thought it was C++.
@cargouvu6 ай бұрын
I never bothered to enquire on how it runs on the desktop. Just assumed it was C++. Is there a good article on how the desktop version boots?
@machtmann28815 ай бұрын
You can just think of Slack because that is an Electron app. Electron apps are web-based applications that run on desktop but are really like browsers in the end. This makes it so that the codebase is the same on every operating system. It will act exactly the same on macOS as it will on Windows. Downside of that is it can't take advantage of OS specific features (example: Excel. Sure you can install it on Mac but it's a hobbled version because it needs to use Windows specific packages that don't exist on any other OS). But from a maintenance perspective, developers like less work to maintain an application. Electron Tableau would finally let it run on M-series chips without the need for Rosetta 2.

Its too bad salesforce bought tableau, its clear they're just dogpiling on the AI bandwagon (the candle is already fizzling out on the hype). Id rather have better viz options, less hacky calculations and better data modeling features over any of this other fluff.

We never used dashboards at all. The list of metrics were our "Dashboard" and now the Pulse Metrics need to replace this. This does not work as good as it worked with metrics so far because of some of the limitations. Thank god I'm able to change the base data and the tableau data sources as well. In a lot of workbooks and views we did calculations and stuff on the data and not in the data source. This now is a real problem mit pulse and I need to "port back" those calculations into the datasources instead. In some cases this is not even possible, because the calculations rely on parameters and such. real bummer

Make it cheaper. That’s how you reach more customers… I know tableau. I want tableau at my startup. We can’t exactly afford it
@TableauTim5 ай бұрын
interesting . Tableaus going with the add more features to it and keep it the same price. Would you accept less features at a lower price? if so what would you keep and what would you chuck? or do you want all of it at a lower price because in your view tableaus asking too much for the vlaue proposition?
@machtmann28815 ай бұрын
I highly doubt Tableau will drop the price (or at least by much). Tableau could go another route and try to do feature parity compared to other BI tools to justify its price. If it maintains a healthy profit margin and remains desirable, it won't feel the need to race down to larger market share but lower price and thinner margins.

its for the C Suites who need to be spoon fed data and insights on a drip feed, and who wanted the data yesterday
