Let me know what you think of the lack of support for Tableau Server. Will this be a big enough carrot to help you consider switching? What compromises will you have to make? Great content as always. I think many server admins are going to want to ask you the very question you've asked: what will we have to compromise on in order to move to the cloud? Not having access to the repository could be a downside for some. No support for multi site (I know that's no longer a problem) was definitely a deal breaker for us. I also think that having less control over performance / storage is a big deal. How are people, in your experience, coping with that?

That's a great insight. A quick question. As it is using chatgpt (a third party), what about data security, I mean chatgpt will use the data to train itself which includes our clients data as well. Can yu highlight something about it,

Great intro to Tableau Pulse! Those little admin details always get you in the end haha. We are definitely thinking of switching to Online from Server. Before, it was a little hard to justify because I always felt Online was like "Tableau Server but online and it costs more". But with the addition of Pulse, that starts making the extra costs a bit more digestible. We're not at a scale that needs constant maintenance of the Server so it hasn't been a huge anchor on us. If we had really sensitive data that had to be on-prem, then that would keep us on it but luckily, we're not in that field. I will miss the Workgroups database though. But the feature parity with Pulse (and finally getting a director of data yay!) makes this decision a bit smoother.

Hi Tim, nice video. Im having an issue with Tableau, Im trying to completely delete/drop a column from my data set on the data source screen. Do i use a calculated field since 'hide' is hollowed out and unclickable?

You must be connected to a published data source

Hi Tim, I have Tableau Pulse enabled on my site but when I click on it, the new tab opened remains blank. Do you know if this is a common problem or do you have any ideas on how to fix it?

You still having this issue?

I'm using a trial account, but I'm struggling to make Tableau Pulse works. I did the steps that you mentioned, but, when I click on Tableau Pulse icon, a page opens with the message "Tableau Pulse unavailable"

It might be disabled for trial accounts. Worth nudging tableau support but another way to try it is to join the tableau developer program and there you can get a full tableau cloud instance for testing that it works on.

we already use tableau cloud and I'm still quite not sure what I think about pulse. When it's working, it's great, but we cannot replicate all of our previous metrics sadly. Mostly it's due to the fact that the metrics we had were without a time dimension. My biggest complaint right now is that there's no way (visible) to remove metrics again. But perhaps I'm missing something

No that’s right.

It's quite the dilemma indeed. Moving to the Cloud ain't straightforward, as you say some clients can't, the Cloud poses some limitations (to mention some: storage, concurrent jobs, limited access to auditing the repository...) that may cause Companies refrain moving away from Server. To not mention the costs of the migration (especially in a scenario with tons of Custom Views and Subscriptions, that cannot be migrated directly and should rather be recreated from scratch AFAIK). Nonetheless, Pulse and likely the upcoming Copilot are going to be huge game changers. But not enabling them on Server may be a double-edged sword: I am thinking to a scenario where some customers may start looking at other BI solutions that may support similar functionalities in the near future and offer a more flexible environment. Interesting to see what happens!

It’s hard to know whether more customers want the cloud features over the server features. I think this is part of the picture that’s hardest to understand.
