What I find odd about The Sarah Jane adventures is that it was able to turn those farting aliens into interesting recurring villains.

IN DEFENSE OF ROSE. Rose gets a lot of flack, I think primarily because of the romantic relationship between her and the Doctor, which wasn't what a lot of people thought the show should be about. Also, she was the one that a lot of newer fans latched onto who didn't understand what the show was meant to be about. However I firmly believe that she deserves at the very least an honourable mention in this list, for a number of reasons. Firstly, she was such an incredibly human character. Hugely fleshed out as a person and so relatable. She came from a single parent household in a lower income area, she worked in a shop, she had little education, and yet she was sweet, warm and passionate. She made mistakes and made poor decisions that impacted those around her, but guess what, that's what people do! She was selfish at times and she didn't always stop to listen and understand but she cared deeply and her instincts primarily drove her to do good. She was as human a character as the show has ever had (as was Donna). Even her family was well fleshed out, with a mother who wasn't perfect but meant well and cared deeply when it mattered and a boyfriend who was committed but insecure, they were all realistic and so were their relationships to each other. Secondly, she was so good at the different ranges required, she was able to love and admire the Doctor, she was able to argue with him and hold her own, her emotional scenes were undeniably heartbreaking, she could do it all. She did her share of saving the Doctor and of being saved, of being scared and of being brave, of running away from a fight and of running towards one. And her on screen chemistry with the Doctor, romance aside, was just incredible. Her and Ten complimented each other so well, you couldn't not fall in love with their relationship, be it romantic or otherwise. Finally, and I think this one is the easiest to roll your eyes at but actually one of the most important - Rose was the doorway for so many fans into the Doctor Who universe. She was what made the reboot such a roaring success. Eccleston was great, the stories were great, but Rose was the emotional centre of the show and we all know that the emotions are at the heart of what draws viewers in. Not to mention, the function of the companion has always been the entry point for the viewer, and Rose was the first entry point to the show for so many viewers. You can roll your eyes at the new viewers who love Rose all you want, but at the end of the day, without Rose, those new viewers would never have existed and the reboot would have failed. To me, Rose is the face of the reboot, Rose is equivalent to the new series. My other top two would be Donna and Sarah-Jane, but Rose will always be number one because of those reasons. Also on a more personal level, she taught me that female characters could be real life people like me which I hadn't seen much of before, and that the guy doesn't always get the girl but sometimes that's what needs to happen. And oh man that Bad Wolf theme, that was such a perfect piece of music to back her up, like how could you not love Rose just because of the music you get with her. So emotional, so haunting, so perfect. Rant over, don't hate on Rose please!!!

I love Rose and she'll always be my first companion. However having been rewatching her seasons recently I have noticed that she treats Mickey terribly. I don't care about her leaving him in the first episode, she thought she could come right back, nobody told her the Doctor was a bad pilot. I'm talking about her stringing the poor guy along. It seems like Rose kept ditching Mickey and then expecting him to still want to be with her later. Not that Mickey is innocent but she should have just dumped the guy already. I still will always love Rose and 10 together and Rose will always have a special place in my heart.

I agree Donna was sensational. She began as an annoying character but her journey with the Doctor changed her and seeing that change was wonderful and emotional. I love Barbara Wright as she's brave and dignified and Jacqueline Hill's performance in The Aztecs was powerful stuff. I love Leela with the 4th Doctor because she's so aggressive and tactless and from that comes some terrific humorous moments.Sarah Jane Smith was brilliant. Jamie would also be a favourite of mine. Ace was a great companion. Fantastic video Wingy.

It hasn't been until years later that I've realized how good a companion Donna Noble is. It's sad, though, that it seems they didn't have a lot of faith in her as we got guest appearances by both Jones and Rose during that season, undermining Donna's impact. I really liked Jamie MacCrimmon, and I but I think Sarah Jane will always be my favorite. She was my first Doctor Who companion and Elizabeth Slayden was amazing. I am so glad she got her own show; if any of Who's companions deserved one it was her. And I liked how real she felt as a mentor/leader, how I could see the old Sarah Jane in her but also see how much more stronger and confident the years had made her. RIP, Elizabeth. You played a huge part in me falling in love with this franchise.

In "Genesis of the Daleks" Sarah Jane is forced to load what is most definitely radioactive material into a missile. It's said to be a very trying task and the implication is that she certainly would have died from severe radiation poisoning if she had to do another round of work. However clearly it didn't have any adverse effects to her longevity since she lived on into the new series. However in "School Reunion", when asked if she ever had a family, she reveals she hasn't with a somewhat pained expression. The implicit reason seems to be that she never got over her adventures with the Doctor, yet we still see her out reporting in School Reunion so she does have a life. It's possible the exposure to the toxic waste left her sterile further explaining her lack of children or major relationships between the two appearances. Sometimes travelling with the doctor definitely has it's down sides.

It's hard to pick just one! How about one group? I think the 2nd doctor had the best two companions. The way they did his trio provided more dynamic and versatile interactions. He had one companion from the past (Jamie) and one from the future (Zoe) . They were kind of opposite in character as well as background which gave them a lot to learn from one another. It also provided a wider range of perspectives in situations. Not to mention the 3 of them had great chemistry as well.

I'm still going through all of the Classic stuff, so this list is probably going to change. But for now my list is: Ian and Barbara - I know this is kind of cheating, but these two were far stronger than I than I expected. From Barbara arguing with the Doctor about the morality of changing history to Ian calling the Doctor out on his bullshit like few other do, they were the perfect people to kick the show off with. (Side note: I also found Vicki to be just adorable, but not really top list material) Jamie - Jamie just kills me. I love how he does his whole "tough Scotsman" thing but in reality he's kind of a wuss sometimes. Really well thought out, brilliantly played and just good fun. Jo Grant - although she was set up to be a little bit "simple", she ended up being a great match for Pertwees DDoctor especially in her almost gleeful and regular disobedience of the Doctor in the name of what she saw as the better course of action (and she was right quite a lot of the time). She was also adorable, so there's that too. Sarah Jane: if someone told me they did not like Sarah I would have them sent to have their head examined. There were so many things about her that were amazing. She was funny, intelligent, beautiful, and she didn't stand for any of the Doctor's melodramatic nonsense. Just... the quintessential companion. Tegan - it might just be because she's Australian like me, but i really do like Tegan. Her character would occasionally suffer from writing, but she was usually a standout character, and also one of my first favourites ("The Visitation" was my favourite when I was little). (Another side note: Nyssa might have made this list if they gave her just a little more character. She was incredibly pretty too) Ace - "Who are you calling small?!" Ace irritated me for a good five seconds, but then I grew to like her. I regret i have not seen her in anything except "Remembrance of the Daleks", but even just in that she sets herself apart. Really good character there. Amy - oh dear, did I have a crush on her when I was 11, watching the show as it was broadcast. She was such a good character, and she was also not willing to just stand for the Doctor's bullshit (Rory was the same, but only in later series). Pity she was given such an awful ending...

I think Ian and Barbara are probably my favorite. Ian stopping the Doctor from killing the wounded caveman, was so good in the first Dalek series, always taking the lead. Barbara and the Aztecs, even in the Edge of Destruction, she stood up to the doctor. They’re definitely underrated because they were the first, but they were great.

Ace (I think 7 and Ace play off of each other brilliantly, and she beats a Dalek with a baseball bat) Honourable Mention goes to Donna, her character arc is fantastic and Catherine Tate was a surprisingly good emotional actress.

My favourites are influenced by memory. I’ve been watching Doctor Who since Spearhead from Space in 1970, when I was six and so my favourites are the ones who stuck in my memory the most. No.3 would be either Jo Grant or Liz Shaw, both of whom I remember with great affection. Then No.2 would be Peri. I loved her chemistry with Peter Davison and Colin Baker and I loathed the way she left the series in Trial of a Time Lord (which otherwise I actually liked). My No.1 would be, like you, Sarah-Jane Smith. Now actually, at the time I watched it when I was small, I didn’t like her at all, but eventually I grew to love her as time passed. And while I’m here I’ll just say for me, John Pertwee will always embody The Doctor the best, I always think of him as a sort of suave Edwardian gentleman at his core. This is of course partly as he was my first Doctor, as David Tenant was yours. But that’s me. Great video. Love your channel. 😀

Nice to see Ace listed - she undoubtedly set the template for all future companions and will always be hailed as the first modern companion of Who. Anyone who even remotely likes Rose (and is unfamiliar with classic Who) should really look back to S25 & S26 of McCoy's era and watch her mature from a troubled tearaway teenager into an adult under the tutelage of a father-figure-Doctor (who happens to be a total opposite to her in every single way, which just adds to their great relationship). I don't dislike Rose but I always felt like she was simply Ace-lite, with a hard-to-stomach love-angle thrown in for good measure before becoming an unrelatable plot-device.

I think as much as ppl disliked Donna in her first appearance, it was so necessarily for the later arc. We saw some shades of compassion outside of her shouting and fighting with the Doctor, and we saw her develop a chemistry and friendship with the Doctor that began the humanisation of this character. With her return, we saw the heart of Donna laid bare and her very human and natural compassion; the Fires of Pompeii was a great opener for her TARDIS adventures, because her compassion wasn’t just bc she made a friend who was going to die, she just wanted the Doctor to save SOMEONE. ANYONE. Out of all those people, just don’t let EVERYONE die because the eruption of Vesuvius was a fixed event - because if you can save one person, it’s worth it. She kept her slightly abrasive temper, which let her challenge the Doctor and not simply be in awe of him and what he could do for her life. She didn’t care about him being a Time Lord or how powerful he really was, to her he was still up for criticism, open to be challenged. After Rose and Martha, that was such a necessary kind of character. She had great development, a heart, a temper, a wicked sense of humour and an unfairly heartbreaking ending to her journey, that made her so special as a companion. Catherine Tate and David Tennant did a brilliant job in series 4 and for me, it really is the best of New Who. And yes, Sarah Jane and Ace are the best classic Who companions, undoubtedly. I’m not sure any character can truly touch on the longevity and legacy that Sarah Jane Smith had with the Doctor. Elisabeth Sladen will be very sorely missed to the very end of the show.

Brilliant picks. Some of my favorites have been Donna Noble, Sarah Jane Smith, Amy Pond and Martha Jones. Donna was just amazing! She's been the most...human companion we've had. Some of her reactions to the most extraordinary things the Doctor shows her and her growth as a character was a joy to watch. Also her exit from the show was just heartwrenching. Sarah Jane, just...wow. I haven't seen any of the episodes she was in in Classic Who, but from what I've seen of her in New Who and in her spin off show; I can see why she was a favorite amongst many. Amy I also found really funny. While she was annoying at first (what with her crush on the Doctor) she became really likeable as the series went on, and I really liked the dynamic between her, Rory and 11. And I really liked Martha as well. While she did develop a crush on the Doctor (which was annoying at first because it seemed as though they were going to give Rose's character treatment to her), that quickly went away and the growth in her character was amazing to watch. I don't know, all of these characters have been my favorites. Rory and Captain Jack are also honorary favorites as well.

Katerina is the one companion who never gets enough attention, mainly because she was only in 5 episodes, of which only one still exists. Had the writers not been afraid to write for her and not killed her off, she could have become one of the best companions ever. Watching her grow from ignorant hand maiden to an educated woman could have been marvelous. If you haven't watched episode 2 of 'Daleks Masterplan' do so now. It's all we really have of her, aside from her sacrifice scene, and... HOLD ON! Did I hear you say that 'The Hand of Fear' is your favorite all time classic DW story? THE HAND OF FEAR?! It's not a bad story, but come on dude. I mean, whatever floats your boat... you like it above all others, ok fine, but... eh.

waxtheknob Very late reply so apologies but Hand Of Fear was the first classic story that I watched so it's got a special place in my heart. There are many stories better than it but it introduced me to my favourite Doctor, companion and has a great villain (until Eldrad becomes a man and is pretty shit). I pretty much know it word for word and my DVD of it is pretty worn out. I honestly don't think I'd be as big of a whovian as I am if I didn't see it back when I was an innocent 11 year old

One thing that annoys me about the Sarah Jane continuity is that we know she met the 5th Doctor and never asks to travel with him again, yet in School Reunion she complains he never came back and she thought he was dead. Doesn't quite add up. 5) Bill 4) Ace 3) Jamie 2) Donna 1) Sarah Jane

10 also says he's regenerated "half a dozen times since we last met", which with hindsight includes the War Doctor but actually clearly shows RTD forgot about The Five Doctors.
@julieeverett74424 жыл бұрын
@@f1since08 no he didnt, at this point the war doctor hadnt been added so yes it DID include the five docotrs. And the bitching was new series retconning a romance between Sarah and the doctor which there never was. But with which one? Third, he was a mentor and of similar age to 1st or 12th? To 4th? Of the classic era he was the most inhuman of them all, strong friendship yes, romance? Not a chance!!!

I freaking LOVED Donna, easily my favorite companion in the new series. She may have been obnoxious in The Runaway Bride, but after that she really became not only hilarious, but also really relatable and sympathetic

Great choices - Sarah-Jane will always be my number one companion, with Rose a close second. My expectations of Billie Piper in the role were so low but she really was fantastic. The romantic aspect of her relationship with David Tennant's Doctor could've been annoying but wasn't for me as it grew from a well-written, gradually developing friendship. The only fully-rounded companion character in the Moffat era was Bill, IMO - sorry, tried to get through writing a comment without bashing Moffat but couldn't help myself!

I've seen all of new Who and I'm slowly making my way through classic Who (I'm currently halfway through the Second Doctor's second season) but my list so far is - 5. Jamie - He is adorable and brave and funny, and his chemistry with Patrick Troughton is excellent. I feel like Jamie is what Stephen was meant to be (another companion I loved, but was definitely wasted during his time). 4. Amy/Rory - It's a total cheat having both, but I would definitely like them both less without the other. Rory would be too whiny and insecure and Amy would be too obnoxious and much too Clara-ey for my taste. Matt's first season is a favourite of new Who, largely due to his chemistry with the Ponds. 3. Bill - She is funny and curious and grounded and was an excellent palate cleanser after She Who Must Not Be Named. 2. Barbara - One of the most criminally underrated companions, she was smart and grounded and is responsible for most of the solutions to the various pickles the Doctor and co would get into. 1. Donna - Like most people, I was very skeptical about her at first, but she quickly became one of the reasons that the 10th Doctor's last season is one of the best seasons all round in new Who. She was funny, relatable, kind, and like Wingy said, she had some of the best emotional scenes in the series. Honorable mentions - Susan (unfortunately she was shafted by 60's television's penchant for dumbing down young female characters), Martha, Stephen, Polly.

After rewatching Series Three I really think Martha is one of the best companions. Like when we look at what she has done and her character progressing from Smith and Jones to Torchwood like Freema is great. Donna is just amazing and I do not need to talk about how amazing Catherine tate is. But Sarah Jane fills the role as the doctors best friend like I don’t think any other companion apart from 10 and Donna and 12 and Clara have any near their partnership
@markmellor48226 жыл бұрын
1) Wilfred , he isn’t really a companion but the episodes he had , i felt like they gave him good character progression 1a) obviously Donna , her chemistry with the doctor just worked , it was funny , cringe at times but it’s like they understood it and worked with it

The chemistry between Baker and Sladen is incredible. She's easily the best classic Who companion. Donna wins for the best New Who companion. There are times where she acts as the Doctor's conscious, calling him out. Wilf is great too.

I didn't realize how unpopular this opinion was until now but I gotta be honest and say that I'm a huge sucker for Rose. Yeah she was kinda one of the first if not the first companion I was properly introduced to but I find it incredibly hard not to love Rose, she's an incredibly loveable companion and had amazing chemistry with Tenant, not to mention just how good Billie Piper really was in that role. As for the relationship between her and the Doctor, I really like it. I think it works especially considering just how much her and the Doctor click, it really only made sense that they would grow to love one another. That's why again it adds so much heartbreak to her first departure. Again just my personal opinion but she's normally my go to pick for fave companion. The options here were real good as well!

Great list! here are my top ten companions (I admit that I still haven't seen the first doctor's companions after ian, susan, and Barbara... not my fault bc in America many classic who episodes are way too expensive. 10) Ponds/ian and barbara 9) Peri 8) Romana (1 and 2) 7) Donna 6) Jamie and Zoe 5) Jo Grant 4) Martha 3) Sarah Jane Smith 2) Ace 1) Leela honorable mention: Nyssa... not gonna lie, I actually really liked clara in series 7. pls don't hate me :) each to his own, ya know.
@kennethlund72196 жыл бұрын
For me it was Donna by a lot. She and the doctor loved each other. They just weren't "in love" with each other. And when you add her grandfather Wilf it doesn't get any better.

Couldn't pick just one but some of my favourites are: Ian & Barbara, Jamie, Jo, Sarah, Romana and Ace. I've honestly not been especially fond of any of the "New Who" companions, I really liked Clara at the time but looking back now I don't know what the hell I was thinking. Martha or Amy & Rory are probably my favourites of the revived series but even then they're just sort of "fine", they don't really stand out to me in any real way.

1. Sarah Jane 2. Leela (Leela is a seriously underrated character, in my opinion. I think she’s so unique and fascinating) 3. Clara I hate to be the bringer of such wild controversy but I actually really like Clara’s character. I thought her dynamic with both the Doctors she travelled with was a load of fun and, despite the convoluted let down of the “Impossible Girl” storyline, I thought she had some of the most relatable and likeable character growth and personality while travelling with the Doctor that we’ve seen on the show. I liked the Danny Pink relationship a lot and something about her really clicked with me (and only me, it would seem)

My favourite companion is Ace, by far, but I also love Donna Noble, Romana (her Lalla Ward incarnation), Liz Shaw and Leela. My favourite audio companion (who hasn't appeared in the televised show) would have to be Molly O'Sullivan from the Dark Eyes series. Donna is a wonderful character who undergoes great character development throughout her series, and I feel she was the first really good long-term companion under Russell T. Davies' watch. I liked Rose and Martha to a degree, but Rose could be very self-centered, and I just found Martha kinda bland. I also really liked Bill, and yes, I like Clara. I thought she was a very thinly-written character in Series 7, but I thought she really came into her own in Series 8 and 9 alongside Capaldi, becoming much more assertive, resourceful and clever.

Thank you for giving Nyssa a nod. I'm rewatching all of Peter Davison's stories for the first time in 25 years, and Nyssa is SO much better than I remembered, easily Davison's best companion. People seem to recall her as weak and useless, but she was tough, intelligent, brave, and caring. She was also very effective in most of her stories, tinkering with machines, helping the doctor with puzzles, and keeping the peace. She would even fight when necessary. At a time when Turner was experimenting with all sorts of new companion concepts, many of whom were argumentative and unreliable, Nyssa was an old-school rock like Sarah Jane or Romana. She also had a heroic departure. Honestly, I have no idea why people remember her as a flake. When I go over my top ten, I may have to consider a spot for her. Jamie and Donna are already on there, btw. :)

Honestly the whole ranking the Doctors is impossible for me on their own merits... its always the Doc-Companion double act that makes or breaks it. Hartnells OG crew (very hip hop :D ) worked well because each of them was centered around a certain archetype and it meshed well. The Doctors after Hartnell absorbed some of "Ians" personality as the amount of companions shrunk. But for me the 5 stand out pairs are from best downwards: 2 and Jamie 7 and Ace 10 and Donna (yeah not Rose... :D shock for some) 3 and Joe 4 and Leela (again... shock! Not Sarah? :D ) Not to say I dont freakin love their other companions at times... but these are my favorites. Some Doctors have bad luck in that regard... Both 5 and 6s time just felt ... unpolished? The dynamic didnt really work with any of their companions. Again: Depending on episode. F.i. I LOVE "Kinda" as well as "Revelation of the Daleks" but overall... I have less fun watching their eras. The slashed budget didnt help either I suppose. As for companions I reeeeeeeeeally dislike? Adric and Teagan in about 50% of their episodes, Mel in about 60% of hers... and Clara... in pretty much 80%+... after her "mysterious girl" plot was over in half a season she became ... unbearable. A glimmer of a good scene here and there... but not nearly enough to counter the bad/bland. NOT J. Colemans fault btw... good actress. Her "evil Zygon Clara" performance was damn good. But the character.... of god... And I just KNOW she will show up again at some point... arg!!!!
