His character is actually based of real life and why it's so enigmatic to some because you've really gotta experience that behaviour to truely understand.

This story is not black and white. It's very well written that way. The baron is a man plagued with drunkenness, and carelessness. The baron was wrong to do what'd he done up until his family fled. But the clarity of his grief proved that he was a man with a good heart and an obvious tenderness to his beloved. This story should go to show that drug addiction, brokenness, the PTSD. No matter who is right or wrong, there will be consequences for his actions, whether he truly loved them or not.. Don't be so one-dimensional, man.

I mostly believe the Baron once he tells us everything, including the affair. Though this is almost entirely based around how he treated Ciri: pure compassion when she was brought to him clearly hungry and tired. Didn’t even ask questions until she could rest. Then when she was feeling good again, he treated her like one of the guys. It definitely doesn’t excuse his abuse. But I don’t think the fact that Tamara sides with Anna so readily is evidence that Philip is exaggerating. After all, he’s gone away at war for months, even years at a time. Plenty of time for Anna to tell Tamara of what a terrible person Philip was. She was also only 3 when the Evan incident happened, and I know I’ve no memories of what happened to me when I was 3. So it’s likely quite easy for her to trivialize, or even not know of, her mother’s transgressions. All I know is that in the 2010’s, it’s definitely brave of CDPR to make a storyline of an abusive husband, and make him anything other than a 1-D monster.

This Quest line is what completely absorbed me into the Witcher 3. I knew I was playing something different at the end of this quest line. I could not stop after that. I cared about the character. I was invested.

Whenever I replay the Witcher, I get those quests over as quickly as possible and never go back to Orphanage. That place disturbs me more than anything else in the game. I can't deal with the idea of little kids getting eaten or what happened to Anna. The Barron hanging himself was awful. Still, one of the best parts of the entire game.

There is a way to say both the children and the baron. You have to find the spirit and free it before you talk to Anna. Then the witches spare her and mention that the children got away and apparently there's an orphanage that mentions the children arriving

I don’t remember my exact choices but the ending I got was that Anna survived and her and the baron went to go find a healer for her, and I killed the tree spirit (yes, causing the children in the swamp to be eaten sadly). My reasoning for this though is what happens if you free the tree spirit is much much worse... If you aren’t aware of the repercussions: Freeing the spirit does save the children in the bog from the Crones, yes. However, the spirit goes on to murder that entire village that worshipped the Crones. That town had many adults and many innocent children in it. Had to do it that way. Besides if you look into it, the tree spirit is like 20x worse than the Crones in many ways. And the greater loss of life from freeing the spirit isn’t worth it to save the bog children, as sad as it is since the children and the village are both innocent

Day951 Village was a cult bowing down to those crimes, they’re definitely not innocent one bit. If you speak to the guy that cut off his ear from the village to make the offering to the crones, no matter what you tell him he doesn’t budge. He even infatuated the cronie!

Playing his quest made me feel so conflicted but in the end I ended up pitying him a lot.. I love this character, there aren't many that are so well constructed they genuenly make me conflicted. Oh btw I noticed you said the baron burned down the stables. I always believed it was lighting that caught them on fire and everyone refused to do anything because the baron was drunk when it happened so that's neat to know

I have the opposite opinion of him after finishing the questline. His wife and daughter are not property and he treats them as such. Ruined his wifes life by treating her as property. Gets pissed because you didn't drag his adult daughter back to him after being told she is safe and sound. No I don't pity a man who creates his own troubles with women. Sure Anna cheating on him wasn't his fault and Anna is at fault, it was Foltest's fault ultimately. But he went to collect Anna and his daughter as if they were his property that was stolen then forced them to stay at his home for 18+ years against their will. Continued to have sex with his wife though she despised him and didn't want anything to do with him... that's rape many times over 18+ years. Bloody Baron is a despicable excuse for a man. As for the barn, it was lightning that caught it on fire rather than the baron.

edi the world of the witcher is a little more open-minded than ours, so that really isn't an excuse. besides, the baron and anna were both lower class when they married, so you could assume they had mutual respect for each other than what a usual noble would have for their spouse. but i don't particularly dislike the baron. he's really interesting, and a perfect example of how characters are not just black and white. you get to think if cruel circumstance makes someone morally corrupt.

Still, in some ways, they are depicting a more open-minded society than the real medieval society was. Well, scratch the latter. The Western culture was incredibly classist, sexist, racist, homophobe, and antisemitic right into the 20th century until a certain A H overdid himself... Today, many look back and think that it was only a German problem, but this clown had support in many countries and was seen as the lesser evil compared to Stalin and communism as a whole... So, we can´t just lean back and pretend that we´re long over those issues...

I was 16 when this game came out. I actually really liked the Baron after I got past the whole “wow you abusing piece of shit” thing. Because under that he is a man that does truly love his family but simply has lost the battle against his demons. I also happened to free the willow on my first play through and there for Anna died. I was really sad for the Baron and Tamara but when I returned to crows perch and saw the Baron I shed a tear. I really feel for the Strenger family including poor little Dea. She didn’t even get a chance.

The baron killing himself was regrettable and I did feel bad the way it panned up to him hanging in a tree. I think what was really uncomfortable was the fact that he was the only Force within crows perch that kept his guards, if we even want to call them that, in line. That for me was extremely uncomfortable, as his retinue acted as gang members tend to, which means if a power vacuum opens, then those under the watchful eye of said power, are subject to whatever morality or lack of the group possesses. I swore after that, his wife must live because the alternative damns so many other innocents

That was the fold ending actually. Saving the baron is not a good ending as he was never saved and just would of continued dominion over Anna which is bad ending.

I didn’t save the kids. At that point, there was no proof the Crones are kids (although there was suspicion), and there was also no proof that the spirit would save them. So I stuck with what I knew and helped the crones. Obviously meant that Anna and Philip live, and that Downwarren wasn’t destroyed. But once I knew that the crones did indeed eat children, I felt quite bad.

I have a character in a world I write short stories in nick named the “Brooding Baron”. First conceptualized it before playing this game actually. It just kind of rolls off the tongue, and have his surname sound similar to the word “brooding”. More of an antagonist pissed that the rise of a merchant class has led people with ancient lineage like him, to be less important and respected.

Can't blame you too much because this is a common misconception but Mark Addy voiced Robert Baratheon in Game Of Thrones, he *did not* however voice the Bloody Baron. Although they do sound very similar, the baron was actually voiced by James Clyde.

Remember when i played the red baron questline, i was amazed how well the story was written and how dark and tragic its was.. I kept saying to myself "This is the best game i have ever played" and to this day, very few games come close to adding that kind of immersion and depth to a game as the witches series has.

My first play through I regretted as I'd ending up causing the folks of downwarren to get hurt, and the Baron ended himself. Those 2 events since tied, stuck with me through the whole game. Was the first things I tried to fix when doing the replay. He ended up going to the mountains instead :) his character sort of reminded me of Robert Baratheon in Game Of Thrones

Probably just the voice actor, weight, and drinking. In the books Robert Baratheon grandmother was a Targaryen, and he’s steeped in noble lineage. Don’t really think overall their characters are a really similar outside of the drinking and weight though.

For me why these 2 characters are similar: both drunkards, both are large built in similar way (large, bearded, dark haired), both known for fighting, both are leaders, both have hit their wives, both are longing for lost love, both have a love of the hunt, both very much like things their way, both had wives that were not faithful to them, both had wives that used to love them but now despise them, and of course the voice actors chosen accent sounds a little like Robert to some degree. Both were good characters.

There is actually an option where baron and his wife live in crows perch while she is slowly dying from the pact with crones. Her death takes about a year. she will be sane and they be together, while the daughter has to go with witch hunters.

@@lunaball1 Before you go look for his wife. You go to downwarren but DONT take quest for the tree. Just go to the tree, release the spirit with the ritual. Tree will save kids (thus saving her sanity) Then you do the quest about using the baby to look for wife and daughter. do the daughter. Then go look for Wife, crones will send you to Downwarren. You'll talk to elderman, he'll tell you about the tree but you'll tell him you already did it. So he cuts hsi ear in the village and you go back. Finish the rest, then go to Baron. With him go back to the Crones. And because kids were freed by the spirit and were freed before you were sent by the crones, they will NOT PUNISH HER. Thus not transforming her into a water hag. She'll stay human and be still sane. There's a whole vid on it on YT ;) Hope it helps.

@@edi9892 It has negative. This is witcher. There'S just shades of grey. She will die from it but that one year will mean that she can enjoy living with her husband. You see, she will die in that one year anyway but either sane or insane on the road searching for a cure. Yes that village will die. Although that village is not that umm how to say it innocent. Pact with crones is a path of corruption. How did you kill them though? Thats rare. That said. I myself did it the most basic "good path" since I didnt want to do tree sooner etc, I played normally and baron went with his wife searching for a cure of her insanity - and on the road she'll die in a year. Daughter went with WH and village was saved, the Fourth Crone aka the tree was killed by outright stating you will not help het and yo usimply fight her. Could've been done in more easy way by pretending to help and then after sliting the throath just not letting the horse drink it.

He's built up prior to meeting him as this crazed monster you'll be terrified of but you end up getting this insider view that is pathetic, sympathetic and in a weird way likeable. It's such a masterclass of story telling it lives with me to this day after so many years. I was waiting on the story to turn and him to be awful to Siri but no. For some reason, I always imagined Robert Baratheon from ASoIaF just like the baron. Both suffered PTSD after a war, both became alcoholics to deafen their traumas and sadness. Only thing the baron did better than Bobby B was that he tried to be a better man. In the end, I believe he succeded. At least, in the good ending.

Usually I don't comment on any platform but when I do ... I played the games one after the other + dlc without knowing too much about the Witcher and I can honestly say that I cried and had a super sad state after I finished the quest Red Baron ... Usually I always have something to criticize if something it seems wrong or aside from the situation but I was left wondering how well the story is done. I think I talked to my girlfriend for 3 days and I told her everything and I can say that she is amazed at how much she is happy that I like her and she keeps asking me what quests there are and what stories they have. Without exaggerating, even after I finished Witcher 3 (almost 1 year ago) I still wonder how many things are still in the game (I want to mention that I did 100% of the missions and I discovered every corner of the map) I didn't think so that I will become such a big fan but the story captivated me enormously. And I'm not even talking about the end of Blood and Wine ...

I think a big part that is overlooked is the battles. The man definitely suffered from PTSD from the wars and tried to drown the memories with alcohol. That doesn’t excuse his acts fully but we shouldn’t just blame him and vilify him outright

So basically, she insists her cheating is because of "true love". I'd bet that the baron hits her because of self defense, and that the hits are justified, and I think, all of hit. Hell, if baron is impulsive as F, he could have killed Geralt the first time he saw him(point here is the always death scene of Geralt when visiting the elder vampire, a very impulsive NPC).

It's weird you mention people tend to stop at velen because that was actually almost me I remember I got the witcher 3 for my ps4 i had gotten for my 15th bday because I like fantasy games and knew nothing at all about it, around the pellar goat quest I debated to trade in the witcher 3 to get gta v and I'm glad I didn't because it ended up being my favorite game of all time can't wait for the ps5 upgrade

It’s really something how well a story is being told when it has people debating on which choices are the best decision for the game. Should I kill the tree to save many while others die? Or should I let the tree live and it let it cause further harm? Should I save the Barons family letting the children die or do I save the children being held hostage by the crones and let Anna and Baron die? One thing I love too, is that the game never states which decision is the right one, the choice is always catered to the players. No matter which choice you make, there’s never a simple conclusion to anything. The game actually forces you to make tough choices and to think critically. The best choice is not always the right choice and I don’t think I’ve seen a game that shows that well.

Anna is the bad person she was cheating on the baron when he was fighting the war she stole his daughter took off with some strange man you know to him and then he kills the man and then she tries to kill him in front of her daughter multiple times tries to kill herself in front of her daughter multiple times and then what did she do she will she won't let it go and she keeps you know that will never let him have no peace and move on and because of her precious boyfriend the main and then she has a magical abortion with a witch and turns one of his last children into a demon

So sadly saving the kids is actually the good ending. The daughter and Anna get to say goodbye and remember better times and the baron finally ended himself failing to have the balls to change as a man. It's one of those horrid stories that is actually true. It's real amusing people who defend the barons behaviour clearly has never had a alcoholic father/parent and know nothing. They will be your best mates when they are in a good mood but if you are close to them they use you as a vessel to spew fourth all their venom. The writing was so well done and correct. It's why it hit home for so many people.

If you people haven't noticed, you can save both Anna and the kids. First, rescue the Whispering Hillock (the tree in the cave) Then do the questline the proper way. I actually did this on my second playthrough and surprised that it worked (The Witcher wiki also has the guide for this)
