I love the fact that Seth pointed out, its very important not to become a black belt for the sake of becomming a black belt, but it rather comes as part of the road of yourself getting better on your journey in the martial arts style you choose. As someone who was trained in TKD, we where told that the meaning of Tae Kwon Do is basically "The Way" like the journey is the goal and not a certain part of the road like becoming a black belt, which perfectly reflects what it is all about in Martial Arts, its not about which Martial Arts is the best or strongest etc, its about finding yourself on this journey, getting better and becoming confident in yourself and your craft (confident not arrogant). It was still an interresting video idea if martial artist can spot people that are not black belts

dude. I remember being in TKD as a child and hating how under-stimulating it was and how smug everyone was about their belt rank, but then there would be a 7 year old with a black belt. American TKD is usually an after school program (not always, but you know).

That's the issue with TKD. No one takes it seriously anymore because of how easy it is to get belts. When I was in middle school we had a Judo teacher and eventually we got a TKD teacher, the only reason I didn't make black belt is cause it only lasted for like 2 years each and our teachers never gave us belts. It's pretty shit how kids are indoctrinated into this program and little kids get black belts without any effort and when they reach adulthood they only reach their potential as a black belt if they decide to keep going until after school, but if they don't then that black belt basically means nothing because they didn't have the skill to show for it most of the time, cause they're kids.

I self taught myself more weapon based but I studied took what worked for me to defend myself from getting attacked by multiple individuals. Pressure testing moves tends to work. I hung out with many martial artists trained that ended up practicing two or more styles of martial arts they tend to mix them up while fighting for real. My teacher was the school of hard knocks Never won a fight but that was because it was me against group of people thus I started studying weapon usage and even kicking a person when they are down.

He managed to get a hug out of it. 😬 If he cared so much about respect he'd know that in karate or any martial art you leave your problems at the door. 12:25, so as someone who's smoked and drank a lot, especially the drinking, I can understand why Keith did what he did. Alcoholism can put you in a very dark place. When you are trying to break away from the drinking and actually realize how much you hurt everyone with your selfish self-destructive behavior, it's a freaking Tsunami of emotion. People who are generally sober or not in the cycle of addiction view the world in a very normal way, an alcoholic or drug addict does not view the world the same way, their perception of reality has completely altered from the standard person during the time they abused whatever chemical. When you are trying to return from where you were as an addict, and return to the standard, sober view of reality, it's hard. You think rock bottom is when you're fucked up and messing up your life, when you did something dumb because of the chemicals. The truth is, rock bottom happens during the recovery phase, that's when you have to face all of the pain, the regrets, actually look at yourself and all that you've done. It is a very painful introspective phase, and some things you have to do, as a way of reparation, or separating yourself now, from who you were. You may not even realize why you're doing what you're doing, it just feels like you need to do this thing, apologize, try to help solve a situation similar to one you caused, it's a strong compulsion, part of your subconscious is trying to redeem itself, or prove that a change is happening by going against what you would have done in the past. Honestly, I don't know Keith, I can't judge his actions. I sincerely doubt this change of heart was a sort of epiphany for him, but if it was mad respect. Either way, Seth's advice was great. And to anyone struggling with addiction, keep fighting. It's like climbing an icy mountain, you're gonna struggle, but hold on as long as you can before you let go and slip again. And when you slip, get your grip again as fast as you can. One slip up doesn't mean a restart to everything, it just means you need to refocus, get your grip and keep climbing. Even a papercut doesn't fully heal overnight. And to anyone with a loved one struggling with addiction, I'm sorry you have to deal with that. Don't expect anyone to quit cold turkey, relapses will happen, it's not an overnight thing, it's a very long process and it may take years. If you can't handle them mentally or whatever, it is completely okay to walk away and leave them to their own devices, DO NOT let guilt over what they did to themselves cast a shadow on your life. Addiction is a very personal demon which they have to face on their own. Sure, counseling and other resources can make it easier, being there for them can help a lot as well, but in the end the battle of addiction can only be fought and won by the one who is afflicted.

Glad my Masters never glorified our belts. I remember having a one on one conversation about the belts cause I had questions about the degrees and what they entailed and he simply said that its a personal journey. The black belt kinda just means you should know everything about the style, but it's application is to be custom tailored to you in order to truly master it. Which made sense. I had 6 different masters that had gotten visas from South Korea to teach in the US in my dojo. Each taught a different aspect of fighting cause they were simply more proficient in them and everytime anyone asked them a question about techniques they would teach what they know very well buy they were never afraid to point us in the direction of the other masters that knew how to do it better than them. Very humbling and respectful. I really missed them. They had to go back to Korea after about 7 months.

Belt system can be strange. The way it was explained to me, was that it was to help the student as well as the teacher. If a teacher saw a student doing something incorrect and he was wearing a white belt, the teacher would know that he just started and would explain it very simply. If a teacher saw a student doing something incorrectly, but was wearing a brown belt, they could skip the basic level conversation and have more nuanced discussion because the teacher would know by the belt that he was not novice. Sort of like college, you can have a more sophisticated discussion with a senior than you could have with a freshman.

It's not really a stretch as TKD actually comes from Shotokan and back in the 80's they were still very similar. It took me 10 years to get my black belt, mainly because you had to be 18 to be a black belt in my school and I started at 7. Old school rules... Jessica performed KEUMGANG. I think it is the only blackbelt form under WT with no kicks. I was 100% sure she would not be voted out.

She just wasn't that good at it. I could probably spend a few hours and help her make it look better. Her not knowing that she's World Taekwondo (formerly Federation) is a bit depressing... but her instructor being lackadaisical explains everything.

@@yumenozen I was watching again and the other girls were paying a lot of attention to her stances, so even if they didn't knew the form they didn't like the execution, you are absolutely right

Yeah, especially with that many tkd people there. I was way more suspicious of the girl sword-dancing... While being a tkd black belt? Many black belts are lackluster with their forms, many just don't care and only do them because they're requested. Technique and sparring are way more fun :p

Aside from Keith, there were a few really obvious McDojo types that were still considered "black belts." Instead of being a video where you have to guess who really does martial arts, you just have to guess which people got scammed into thinking they're black belts. Colored hair girl, fat girl, and short Asian are the types where if you saw them in a tournament, you'd feel relieved knowing that while *someone* gave them a black belt, you can get a free win off them.

it was funny in my area (population of the three connected towns was about 62-64k) we had 3 or 4 dojos. most of them claimed to be karate but were actually taekwondo which I tried one and realized early that the teacher (a police officer, and personally wouldn't call them a sensei) knew very little. the dojo I ended up joining was a mixed martial art taught by a 3rd generation of the arts creator called Nin-Ti-Kung-do, the mix was obvious by the name. but the point is, the other dojos' students feared this dojo. we were taught on a completely different scale, and in open belt competitions we always fought well above their belts, our yellows would compete with their orange through blue belts. Im not saying STYLE is better or worse. but there is a LOT to be said about the quality of sensei. also there is a lot to be said there are a lot of "black belts" that havent practiced in decades that maybe out of shape but are still very formidable. after years of injuries I cant do the 10' jumping kicks anymore, but my reaction time, speed, and board breaking skills are still there.

Keith doing a breaking demo and not knowing how many he can do first try seems like a giant red flag. If you're not used to breaking, it's a weird one.

They also didn't take into account whether the club where the people train hands out belts to whomever wants one or if it's actually based on their high skill.
