Sofonisba Anguissola is the remarkable woman in this painting. She is also the painter of this painting. she made this double portrait of her and her teacher Bernardino Campi. She was an extraordinary talent and widely recognised in a time when it was virtually impossible for a woman to have her own career. She really broke the artistic glass ceiling. She developed her own style in portrait painting and in this one she paid tribute to the first teacher to really take her seriously. In the clever way she depicted him painting her, he honours her in the picture as well. Later Michelangelo would even teach her and she worked for the Spanish court. In her old age, when her eyesight started to fail her, painters would still travel to her to hear the professional advice from her.
