It’s not because MGM having the rights, In the original book the slippers were silver. They made them red in the movie to show the color contrast, Because it’s the first movie with color.

I think he means MGM has the rights to the concept of adapting the slippers as red on screen, which Universal Pictures cannot do in Wicked. But that begs the question as to why they were allowed to portray Elphaba as green but not allowed to portray the slippers as the more iconic ruby.

I guess musical had problem with ruby slippers copyright so they made it silver like from original book...thats why they put red light on the silver shoes on act 2 to show them its magical...and I guess movie version is gonna use that idea

Also, it’s Warner Brothers who owns the rights to the original 1939 film. They acquired the rights to MGM’s pre-1986 catalog in the mid-90s.

And wicked is based off of the wicked books by gregory maguire. NOT the original books by Frank Baum. So basically the the 1939 movie was based off the original books. And the wicked book series was based off the 1939 movie. And the wicked musical was made because of the new wicked series. So its basically a fanfiction of a fanfiction. They are three different stories in the same world, in a simple sense.
