Godot, Guts blacksmith seemed like a great father figure. Erica seemed to love him and with what little time he had he took Rickert under his wing and helped Guts see that his murder spree after the Eclipse was not good for him and that he essentially abandoned Casca. Guts probably would not be the man he is now (or alive if not for rearming him) if not for Godot. Cracks in the blade is a great chapter in general.

Reading Berserk actually helped with how I feel about my dad. The King of Midland is my father and it took a while to read through those parts. He didn’t do anything physical but he trapped me away too, punished me for losing my virginity, and hated that my sisters and I dated. I look exactly like my mother too. I know for a fact that plays a part. I’m glad I read it though. If Charlotte could make it out and I could too. A lot of people give her shit but I relate to her a lot, she is one of my favorite characters. She is strong in her own way Edit: My sisters and I dating other people, my sister and I did not date. I'd say Gambino's worse. I don't think the King was ever aware of his incestuous attraction to his daughter and would never have acted on his lust for her. It took Griffith's seduction of her and his breaking speech to drive King Windham mad and make an attempt to seize Charlotte. But Gambino...he always hated Guts, always wore his contempt for the boy on his sleeve, beat him, intentionally put him into situations that had a high likelihood of getting Guts killed, and sold him to a pederast soldier for silver coins like it was nothing. Even in the most ideal situation, he was a rotten father, and that only got worse after he got his leg blown off.

My list of best dad's/father figures in Berserk: Godo - Best dad. No contest. Minister Faust - He betrayed the Queen and high officials for the sake of his daughter. Without a second thought, he leapt into action. He didn't question if the letter from Griffith was a bluff or not. The only thing he knew was that his daughter needed him and that was enough. Hassan - Adonis's care taker. Isma's Dad - We may not have seen him but seeing as how well Isma turned out and that she only has fondness when referring to him, he must've been a great dad till the end. Skull Knight - He has more than once came to Guts' aid in his time of greatest need. Providing not just an extra sword but advice and council as well. The Skull Knight is quite possibly the closest thing Guts can call a mentor and father figure, aside from Godo and even Gambino. Judeau and Pippin - Okay this might be a stretch, but I feel like they were really great role models to Rickett. And if we're going to count Guts himself just for being a positive male figure, I'd say they should count as well. Irvine - His been nothing but kind to Sonia and his scenes with her emanate some strong father, daughter vibes. Plus, not gonna lie, it's pretty adorable.

To be fair to Casca's father, he likely wasn't aware of what the nobleman was really intending, and figured that it was the best situation for all parties involved. The impoverished family has one less mouth to feed, and Casca gets a better life living in a castle with nobles.

Best father figure in Berserk? I would put Godo. The blacksmith, despite being a stoic hermit who almost always seems absent minded and immersed in his work did a good job with Erica allowing her to grow up as a cheerful girl full of life and with the determination to tackle anything (like blacksmithing). Also, in the three moments when he speaks to Guts, he is strict but fair and deals in a very constructive way with the dark swordsman, helping him rebuild his path and pointing out the things that should really matter to him in life. To me, if Guts had grown up with Godo, he would have been a swordsman, but a good-hearted one.

Can't decide if I'd put him before or after Lord Vandimion; Julius seemed to legitimately care for his son and tried to actively involved in raising him, and the only shown time he was abusing Adonis he admitted it was because he was taking out some of his frustrations due to his failed assassination attempts on Griffith.

The Berserk father tier list: S: Godo A: Minister Foss, Isma’s father B: Guts, Adolf C: Lord Vandimion, Lord Julius D: The Count, Rosine’s father, Casca’s father F: King of Midland, Gambino, Jill’s father The King is absolutely despicable, and Gambino and Jill’s father (I cannot remember his bloody name) are deadbeats. The Count is awful for locking away his daughter and lying to her, but escapes the F tier for choosing not to sacrifice her. Rosine’s father is an ass, I’m not that upset that she sacrificed him. Casca’s father did something absolutely despicable (giving her away to a nobleman while knowing damn well what would happen next) but he at least had an excuse (dirt poor, other mouths to feed). Lord Vandimion is your average rich, detached father. Not the worst dad to have, but certainly not the best. Julius showed a tendency to take out his anger on Adonis, but it was quite apparent that he actually cared about Adonis, which was why he was tough on him. Guts is difficult to place, but I’ll put him in B tier because his interactions with the Moonlight Child were positive. He also comes across as a good influence on some of the younger kids that have travelled with him (Rickert, Isidro). That being said, he has a lot of trauma in his past and a beast of darkness lurking within, so he’s a wildcard. For those of you who don’t remember Adolf, he was the one who invited Guts and Puck onto his carriage (despite Guts’ warnings), leading to him and his daughter dying brutally when the skeletons show up. He seemed like a good person and a good father, but not much screen time to go off of. Minister Foss may have had a lot of shortcomings personally and morally, but he was obviously a good father despite that. He would have done anything to protect Elize. Isma’s father never appears on screen, but Isma was clearly very fond of him and it’s obvious that he went through a lot for his daughter. Godo was the father figure that Guts needed during the darkest time of his life. He saved Guts’ life both literally (through the weapons and armour he crafted for him) and figuratively (through the guidance he gave him). That’s not even beginning to talk about his relationship with Erica, which is easily the best father-daughter relationship we see in Berserk (a fairly low bar to clear, admittedly *cough cough* King of Midland). He also acted as a mentor to Rickert.

I always took it that the kings actions were results of the idea of evil manipulating his emotions. Perhaps the king did lust after his daughter but would never actually act on it. I always interpreted it as the idea of evil magnifying his lust and jealousy and that's why he locked up griffith and went after his daughter. To lead to the event of the eclipse

I completely agree with the King as worst dad, it'd honestly be a tough choice had Gambino actually been related to Guts. Both are completely fucked up beyond all belief, but out of selling your kid off to be.....abused for a night and to actually be the abuser of your kid I'd probably still agree that the latter's way worse. At least being sold off Guts could kill the abuser and still try and live without the knowledge that Gambino actually did sell him and didn't care for him to the point where he'd put him down himself, Charlotte didn't have that circumstance knowing full well that her dad was a screwed up man who could do such a thing to his own flesh and blood without so much a second thought right off the bat. Guts is a shockingly terrible dad. Surprised he didn’t make the list! When I was reading I was like...why is he so mean to his demon kid...even now with the moonlight boy he isn’t exactly nice! Honorable mention guts!
