When they didn’t understand the ribcage concept, Terri Hardin said, “Have you seen Sleeping Beauty?” 😂
When Terri worked on the first dragon for Tokyo Disney, she was an intern for Disney, but she came back as a full-fledged Imagineer after applying for over 10 years, and was assigned to Big Thunder Mountain. The person she was paired up to work with was so unfriendly she planned to quit, but as a negotiation to get her to stay, she asked for the Dragon’s Lair to be her project as she loved dragons and had sculpted them for years.
The dragon (referred to as female by Terri and male by park literature) was supoosed to just be a stationary figure, but Terry insisted that it be an audio animatronic. She had exactly 20 minutes to pitch it to Tony Baxter, and so she talked so fast that he told her to slow down, that he’d give her more time if she would just speak so that he understood her 😂
The dragon was the largest audio animatronic that WDI had ever made at the time of its creation. It has similarieties to both cats and dogs in the way it moves its feet/tail to make it feel realistic. Guets are also positioned in such a place that its meant to feel intimidating when the dragon wakes up, but Terri never meant for the dragon to be shackled around the neck.
As for how Merlin got the dragon… I’ve heard a version where he found the egg and raised it from a young age (kind of like Hagrid from Harry Potter) and also a version where Merlin grew up alongside the dragon and now they are settled down together in their old age. I haven’t yet nailed down which one is the truth, but those are the stories that are out there 🤷♀️
