Disney: we need films to make money Dreamworks: we need money to make films. That's the key: they've decided to ruin my Kung Fu Panda franchise to make that beautiful film of The Wild Robot. I have one good example: Zootopia was meant to be a big analogy of the human racism with the use of the tame collar and the protagonist was wilde the fox, but Disney decided that it was "too dark". I mean, if you look online it was not: as a kids I loved more cartoons like the Couarge the Dog. Dreamworks isn't scared. It is like Spiderman Into not scared of giving artists freedom.

"Say it with me, kids: DreamWorks is an inconsistent studio." I get that they're inconsistent, but I like to think that they’re like an artist's sketchbook-you flip one page is a masterpiece, and then the next is a rough sketch. While I'd love for DreamWorks to match Disney or Pixar’s consistency, they've always operated this way, with a few gems surrounded by mid-tier films. It’s basically their identity. I get that business is business, and DreamWorks needs a steady income to compete with giants like Disney. If that means producing some average films to stay afloat, I’m okay with it-as long as every now and then, they deliver a groundbreaking, life-changing movie that leaves a lasting impact.

I think what it is, is that they make the safer and more marketable movies to make money so they can actually fund the better movies. Unfortunately as much as people say they want original and new things, usually they end up going to watch the safer films in theaters, especially with how expensive it can be to go to the movies. So, they make the stuff that appeals to the common denominator, make as much money from that as they can, then use that money to make the more risky and experimental films.

There is something very refreshing with DreamWorks by being inconsistent, a sort of decorporatization in a industry that sometimes feels like it's more assembly line than art. It's a willingness to not make every product maximally effective that allows the studio to produce some of the strongest original franchises in recent years (in comparison to studios like Pixar or illumination)
@frozenwishstudios4 ай бұрын
I feel like it's because of the animation style. The more well-received DreamWorks movies use the stylized animation style while the more poorly received ones use the CG animation style.
@konabos7474 ай бұрын
I don’t think that’s accurate cuz their original hits like panda, ahrek and dragon were classic cg animation and prince of Egypt was a Disney esque animation. It’s literally a flip of the coin.
@Karo-AUTTP-UTTD3 ай бұрын
Not really. Main Kung Fu panda trilogy is a hit and a masterpiece, and CGI looks beautiful in this whole franchise
@bellssbasement3 ай бұрын
This stylized animation style trend started off in 2018 with Spiderverse which really wasn't that long ago, lumping the entire studio for this reason is dumb lol
@frozenwishstudios3 ай бұрын
@@bellssbasement No it started with The Peanuts Movie in 2015 and Captain Underpants used the style before Spider-Verse. The problem is that people ignore The Peanuts Movie for whatever reason (same with Captain Underpants) which is why they act like Spider-Verse was the first one.

The way I see it, dreamworks is a lot like the United States: when it’s bad, it’s just plain frustrating, and when it’s good, it forges its own path.

I agree that DreamWorks is definitely one of the more creative animation studios. While I enjoyed The Wild Robot, I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece or the best animated movie of the year. For me Inside Out 2 is better. As for DreamWorks recent films, I really liked The Bad Guys, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, I thought Trolls Band Together was mid, and I hated Kung Fu Panda 4.

The Dreamworks movies I've watched have all made me laugh, which is what makes them stand out from Pixar and Illumination. I like it when "children's" movies can have good humour. Now, I'm not saying that Pixar and Illumination don't have funny moments; I just feel that Dreamworks hits better with theirs.

When they hit, it really hits, and when they fail, sure it sucks, but the only reaction I have or see is “Welp, guess it’s just another Tuesday.” Especially compared to Pixar and Disney, where their flops are much more egregious than DreamWorks.

I say 2024 was an okay year for Dreamworks, both Orion and the wild robot showed they can still make great original movies. However, Kung Fu Panda 4 shows maybe they should set back from making sub par sequels. As for their television banner even if it doesn't count, it's been noticeable how that group prefers quantity over quality on top of the division being dismantled to make room for producing a gabby's dollhouse movie.

Gotta be honest, out of all the studios about animation that exists, DreamWorks has to be the most mixed-bag of a studio, mostly on how their films deliver so many mix feelings with different results You can have beautiful masterpieces like The Prince of Egypt, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, and Shrek 2, some awful trash fire garbage like The Boss Baby, Shark Tale, and The Bee Movie, some underrated works like The Croods, The Road To El Dorado, and Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, and some forgettable projects that exists like Abominable, Turbo and Antz So yeah, is not a bad studio, but neither a good studio, if it had more good works, then it could be good, but since we live in a world were Shark Tale, Bee Movie, Trolls, and The Boss Baby exists, yeah that's not gonna happen
