Most of the best R&B is in the Indie space. Foreign Exchange, Eric Roberson, Carmen Rodgers, Deborah Bond, Carlitta Durand, BeMyFiasco, and others have dropped dope music that continues to keep the genre relevant to many dj's and music heads including myself. I don't think it will hit the heights of days past because anything that paints Black love and life outside of pathological or sexualized imagery isn't marketed or backed by the "industry" in a consistent way. The few artists that are allowed through (Silk Sonic, H.E.R.) are outliers, but will never be the main again.

To be honest I don’t think that’s true. If you are someone on the internet a lot you see a lot of R & B elements leaking through the cracks. For one lofi is a perfect example and like you mention k-pop or let’s be honest it’s r & B but for a Korean audience. People still like slow grinds. We have one black-owned radio station here in Minnesota (well, in Minneapolis, MN.), KMOJ 89.9 FM. I know I'm old (53), but I MISS the classic R&B that used to be prevalent. All of this Auto-Tune crap...it's not music, don't care who does it. I confess, some of my favorite R&B music was late 80's & 90s. Babyface, Guy, Al B. Sure, TROOP, Jodeci, TLC, En Vogue, Janet Jackson, Prince, Peabo Bryson, and on and on. Then, there's the R&B BEFORE the 80s. I think people just got lazy, since you can literally make all of this music in your own home, especially if you're adept at production. Not that it's (overall) a BAD thing to do this at home. I guess I'm just saying Auto-Tune's gross overuse has effed up music. It doesn't sound HUMAN anymore...the good r&b music was HUMAN...had that human touch...from artists who know how to sing, and do it SO damn well. And, you know what? I would MUCH rather shell out cash to buy an Aaliyah album, since that woman could sing like an angel, and also be as fierce as a tigress, than to listen to someone pretend to sing, and blanket his or her music with auto-tune to sound like a fricking machine...that's what a LOT of today's "music" is: Empty, pointless, and shallow.

Bruh, this is very much so on point. But may I add a critical point of emphasis which played a huge factor is the devolution of R&B is removing the band (actual instrumentalists) from the songwriting process. The most relatable example I can think of is Mint Condition. Secondly, I also watched a video about the evolutionary steps a singer had to take before getting recognized for their talents (which also served as a weeding out process). School music programs, church choirs, singing classes, gigging, etc. While technology has its benefits when used in context, it has served as a replacement for crucial elements of what made R&B music unique (other long-standing genres have not let go of the value of the band). Just my two cents. Great video, keep up the good work.

@Brian Simmons Good points, bro. Hip hop had its own weeding out process as well. A lot of MCs were discovered through live talent shows, open mic nights, on compilations/mixtapes and tended to have to be able to freestyle, battle and perform live. Groups are no longer valued in the industry at all, sample clearance became such a hassle that most rap producers started just making their own original beats with the same sounds from programs like Fruity Loops and jumping on/having styles like other rappers is considered ok now smh...

Radio or not, RnB been Dead since the early 2000's. Prove me wrong. I'm a Millennial and I personally stopped listening to the radio since maybe 2000 in middle/high school because I made and bought CD's so the radio argument can't be had. Its the personal artist dedication that is gone. I seen Charlie Wilson who is older than all of us in concert and he killed it with the dancing and the vocals!! I also just seen Dru Hill in concert 4 weeks ago and STILL can sing every song AND DANCE the same from back in 1999 and did several acapella runs! What we seen with Omarion's battle was Studio RnB compared to Mario, trained singing/passionate RnB and Omarion is what this new generation of RnB is. RnB music makes you want to be in love. There is a seduction and mystery to the music that actually stirs up genuine feelings whereas RnB in 2022 make you want a hit and quit no substance which defines Gen Z. Statistically in 2021 showed that in the last 5 years music concentrated from 1960's to 2000's have INCREASED IN SALES DRAMATICALLY and has out sold as a whole the new generations music. That's why all the comments in older generation music is always saying" music is not the same" and " I need a time machine to go back to this years music". NOTHING TODAY CANT TOUCH THE MUSIC FROM THE 1970S, 80S, 90S, and 2000S PERIOD!

@@y2kcell I have to completely agree with you. R&B music still had so much soul to it and some amazing songs through the early 2000's like those artists you mentioned PLUS Floetry, Teedra Moses, Tweet, Lucy Pearl, Jagged Edge, Donnel Jones, Next, Jon B, Joe Thomas, Musiq Soul child- I actually would argue the 2000's R&B is on par with the 90's in terms of the feel good factor it gave. Also, wow- how come everybody seems to notice that everything came to a halt in 20007?! I'm a real music head and that year I just remember there being no real soulful bangers and the music just became really lacklustre and the feel good factor just left. It became driven towards a white audience- eg. Flo Rida, Pitbull and even Usher doing Love in This Club in 2008- by then it was a wrap and it became harder to find proper R&B standard gems.

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 A particularly keen observation and sharp assessment of WTF happened to R&B. I once read somewhere that the world can’t return to the spirit of past. Like, forward is the only way to go. All forms of art are created within the spirit and influence of the now or anticipation of the future. Look at paintings, clothing, music, sports, politics, crime, the way we interact with each other, and even gender specific roles in society. It all changes or morphs about every 7-12 years, and in some cases even sooner due to tech advances. Humans are resistant to unsolicited change. So if you’re 30 years old chances are that you’ve seen 3-4 of these changes in the attitudes and ways of our society, each being further and further from the spirit of the times that we were born in and grew to possess as the foundation for our moral and social compass’. So the options available today, are a direct reflection of the times and spirits of the Gen. Z generation. And like you said, Gen. Z is more concerned with instant gratification with as little effort or work as possible, rather than intense focus, discipline, and dedication to anything other then their own personal agendas. But don’t you worry, each breathing member of every generation will get their day and time to wonder WTF happened to the world they used to know. ✌🏾🙏🏾☝🏾🫶🏾💯

This is a well thought out plans by the powers that be they have executed this act because of the direction they want to see Blacks go. Black R&B fans need to respect their legacy and not join in on what I see as FAD music, there was once a time when SOUL SINGING was a category, we have been under attack in the Music Industry since the start. It is own and operated by WHITES (lawyers) AND why would they promote your sound over theirs, until R&B fans take a stand those that listen to FAD music will always be directed wherever the industry want them to go. YOUNG BLACKS want to have something that is not their parents sound so they are easy targets for these types of action, music programs have been taken out of the BLACK SCHOOL COMMUNITIES so all the young kid see is HIP_HOP and RAPP, and those singers like CHRIS BROWN do what is getting them $, he would not do a Duet with R&B singer KIESHA COLE because it was R&B so this is the problem where the Industry is saying to ACTS " TO DO THIS TYPE OF MUSIC OR YOU WON'T GET PAID, SIGNED, PUBLISHED"!!!!!!!!!!

You won’t have Rhythm & Blues music without the Rhythm. I respect a “Slow Grind”, but part of the death of R&B has been the idea that it’s all about singing and having The Blues, but people want to dance and feel good, too! A lot of the stuff that gets called R&B is sad sack ambience music. Boyz II Men knew when to give us a “Motownphilly” and a “Thank You” - it’s the balance that is missing today. Tony Toni Tone made “Anniversary”…but they had “My Ex-Girlfriend” on the same album! We want rhythm AND blues! And it’s even better when you put them together! I agree R&B rap have been forced together now as one thing/one sound. But even back in the day Rap borrowed from R&B, words and music…now that R&B is dead, those of us from back then can see how Rap is dying because there’s no R&B to borrow from! imma stop because this is too long already and nobody cares. Lol

Having that dance element (rhythm) is definitely under appreciated in the genre. Usher, Michael, Chris all kept that balance well and I think that played a part in their huge success. It can't just be ambient ballads, or church chords and vocal runs. The best had a balanced approach. And understood that it was r AND b. Think of the contrasting slow bridges on the upbeat songs. Or the choreographed breakdown sections. Dance kinda became uncool somewhere down the line. Now tiktok is apparently supposed to be making it cool again but I don't call that dance. That's just alot of miming and gestures, very rigid lol

He's doing a Las Vegas residency. He's on City Girls new single and to me is the best part of the song. These new so-called genre blurring pop n' b/mumble rappers could NEVER reach Usher or Brandy timeless reach and influence. The internet along with people within the industry try to sabotage the popularity of R&B, but when you’re out in the real world it’s a different story. I know and seen from experience that R&B is still strong. The music today is designed to destroy black people, this is why my channel isn’t trending on KZbin, and I get the same reaction each time I let different individual hear my music in person. These white corporations try to ruin your work just like the women who made power points trying to destroy Nicki Minaj’s career, the only difference is that KZbin and people within the industry get away with it. Micheal Jackson had to use powerful forces to get on MTV. But if Bruno Mars can get millions of views copying our music, that should tell you something even though he’s a great artist. R&B is not dead at all, KZbin can try to sabotage my work, but it will only hurt them in the long run because I’m that good!

Quite a few things happened to R&B music to get it to where it is now, but the MAIN thing that happened was the TELLECOMMUNICATIONS ACT OF 1996. Prior to the late 90's and early 00's, there were hundreds of black owned magazines, radio stations, record labels (qwest, perspective, Silas ect), and we had BET which was HUGE! You could be an R&B act that didn't cross over and release a song on black radio, shoot a video, do some touring - GO GOLD, and you'd be financially set All of that ended around the turn of the century, due to the TELLECOMMUNICATIONS ACT. All of those black owned entities were bought out So now, these new "urban acts" have to cross over or they don't eat. This is why every act now is a "pop" act, they dance, sing mostly uptempo songs, there are no more balladeers or groups because of this.

It’s racially motivated. Look at how sam smith and adelle get paid and boosted to the masses for doing what is essentially R&B. The loss of BET and the strange desire to mix r&b with hip hop all attributed to the decline too. So many factors.

This isn't a religious rant, but I think the lack of church attendance over time played a role in the death of R&B. It wasn't true then and it isn't true today.. R&B simply isn't on trend right now. All it would take is for the tide to change again which it will. If you notice Beyonce new project is considered "House Music". From what I've heard it ain't true House Music but it is dance music from the 90's. That tells me the heavy hitters in the industry with all their influence can change trends very easily if they want to.

The problem now is the artist that are super pushed are either super vulgar, or trying to sound like rappers. And like this video covers, the radio programs, media outlets don’t promote our R&B. If love is being labeled as thirst by the same women that are out here making men feel guilty for liking them by calling them thirsty, then how on earth can R&B be created when the admiration and the main ingredient which is love for blāck women, inspired the creation of it to begin with? Well, first thing's first, R&B is indeed dead. I don't give a damn what nobody say. The genre is dead. And miss me w/ the "You have to look for it" bullsh¡t. That's bullsh¡t. Ain't nobody doin' that. The soul is gone. The vocals are typically plagued w/ auto-tune and Melodyne. Nowadays, songs are roughly 2 minutes long and they don't really be about sh¡t. Notice how nobody in the opera community has to keep having these "What happened to" conversations. Nobody in the heavy metal community has this conversation. It's interesting how R&B bands were told that it costs too much to maintain a band. Everything that didn't work for R&B bands ended up working for K-Pop bands. June's Diary costs too much. The label couldn't just scrounge up enough coins for hair, makeup, wardrobe, per diem, etcetera. Do BTS cost too much? All 7 members of that band get they hair and makeup did. Everything that labels said was a no-go for black bands ended up working for K-Pop bands. Black bands _cain't_ get the standard artist treatment. R&B curiously became this ultra expensive genre that just had these unrealistic expectations. Truth of the matter is, they've put a halt on true blue singing and replaced it w/ mediocre, auto-tune vocals. Labels have shut out artists of my generation and generations prior in order to keep things fresh and new for current generations. That's just the way it goes. They _cain't_ just have Ms. Janet Jackson around in the mainstream for 50 years. Eventually, they gon age her out. That's just the way it goes. It sucks, sure, but that's just the way it goes. They don't do that to Madonna Ciccone though. Life after the major label run leads to the independent journey. And we all know what that's about. Major labels know that artists ain't gon wanna spend $500,000 to $2 million on music that's not gon hit. Music has to be programmed in order for it to hit. Ginuwine's major label music hit because it was programmed. Soon as he went independent, the crickets started chirping. Nah, w/ music being free, artists simply don't wanna do it anymore. "All artists need is the Internet and streaming services." That's bullsh¡t. That's simply untrue. Several artist done came forth and expressed they confusion regarding streaming. See, streaming works for younger artists. It doesn't necessarily work for older artists all like that. But yeah man, the genre is dead and that's pretty much it.

R&B is not dead HipHop is I only respect certain rappers like Kendrick, Mac Miller, Cole, and probably a few others but now days it's like alot of rappers talk about the same thing never no up lifts just a lot of disrespect.

RnB music my beloved genre of music which Identifies who I am and where i come from. The death ☠ of it was especially sealed when the King 👑 of it was arrested, I don't want to mention the name, real lovers of the genre knows who I am talking about,if you don't mind you can mention the name on the comment! but as one of the 90's rnb artist said: Donell Jones "life goes on". I'm gonna keep it alive with what I have throughout the years!!😢😢

The rap mindset where love is seen as cynical and soft is why R&B is on decline. We as a people turned our backs on R&B like how we used to do rap in it’s inception. We as a people lost the love in our hearts and therefore lost what R&B is about…..love and romance. Everything now is thot this, n!&&@ that, shoot, kill and sell narcotics. My generation is the last to really embrace R&B

R&b died when people and men stop going to church people forget gospel is the birth of r&b them singer's back then had the spirit of GOD and they came from the church singing and playing instruments there no church people in r&b anymore even boyz to men came from choir school singing that's what's missing

It's crazy how we went from artists like TLC to Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. TLC was so classy and sexy at the same time to the other artists being trashy and ghetto.

Check out Teddy Bryant, The APX, J’Cenae, Cornell CC Carter, Robert Finley, Leela James, Curtis Harding, Durand Jones and the Indications, Charisse Scott, Tyra Levone, Eric Roberson, Lady Wray, Bobby Harden and the Soulful Saints, Wesley Bright, Crushed Velvet and the Velveteers, and Acantha Lang. They all released music in the past two years. Even the Temptations, Kool and Gang, Melba Moore and Kindred and the Family Soul have released music recently. They just don’t get any shine.
