In the summer of 2006 STARGATE SG-1 was cancelled, and producers negotiated to bring back the show for one more year by moving to a new outlet. There was just one catch.
Here's the real story about why the series ended when the producers had plans for another season.

Stargate SG-1 was one of those franchises that lasted an insane amount of time and yet felt like it was prematurely ended.

Each season had 22 episodes, 10 seasons. Nowadays you have good shows that put between 8 and 12 episodes per season and then end at season 3. Bring back the 22 episode format!

@@zarreff You actually bring up something interesting. The nature of TV shows has changed. In the pre-streaming era, there'd only be maybe 1 or 2 other SciFi shows on at the same time as Stargate, if any. So they could get away with filler content - which every TV show had in the full season format because there was nothing to compete with it. Nowadays, with streaming, if a show hits a filler-type episode, a person can pop on netflix or Amazon and have hundreds of scifi shows or films, thousands of episodes to watch. That's why seasons have been replaced with the higher budgeted series of 8-10 episodes. Filler is a much harder sell. There is the argument that Stargate has a built in fanbase, and would be OK watching filler. Shows like The Simpsons and soap operas get away with it because of their built-in audiences that began back in the 1990s or earlier. I don't know, just a thought.

I wish that we got to know the story that extended Anubises reign. The one they pretty much had planned for the video game Stargate Alliance. But just like all video games that Stargate tries to create end up getting scrapped. I would have at least wanted to know the story and if it were Canon or not.

@@boredinczechia4382 I liked the story about the Ori, I just wish that it was more detailed, because there was a lot of information that the show just skipped out on explaining. They attempted to finish the story with the movies, which was okay but I would have preferred and extended season or two to explain the reign within their Galaxy. But it also would have been cool if Anubis somehow escaped his eternal combat, and was recruited by the Ori at some capacity, I believe that could have possibly created A better outcome to the war with the Ori and the Other's within the Milky Way galaxy. Because it seemed like the vast majority of the ascended beings within the Milky Way were afraid to engage at all which made them completely useless in the battle. It also would have been nice to know what was actually going on within the ascended Realms. You know behind the scenes.

OK, SyFy does not want it anymore. But, by golly, nobody else can have it either. When I don't want a piece of furniture anymore I put it out on the curb and hope somebody else can get use out of it. There is something pathological about destroying something that has value just so nobody else can enjoy it. That is why I stopped subscribing to SyFy. Bill Kennedy Rumor has it that Syfy did the same to Dark Matter. After canceling it they wouldn’t let MGM pick it up. I don’t understand why the production companies give Syfy this right. Once they cancel they should have no further involvement. Otherwise, Syfy has a large incentive to cancel in order to extort unearned concessions.

I was about to say the same thing. I wish they'd made it a new brand, it would also yeah, allowed greater flexibility. Then again, they cancelled SGU just when it was getting good in it's second season. I've always said they should reboot the series once again with a series set in Milky Way and open it with the reveal of the Stargate Program to the public, take the focus away from SG-1 because let's face it, very few of the cast would return for it full-time at this point and explore basically this much larger story set in the Milky Way - and it could be called "Stargate Command".

Nakyer I completely disagree . Allow me to explain. If you pay attention to how the SYFY channel operates they only keep shows around for a MAX of five years. This is because at that point it becomes more expensive to make new episodes as opposed to airing re-runs of old episodes. This is why both SG1 and Atlantis were canceled despite doing well in terms of ratings and popularity. Other examples of this can be seen with other SYFY shows such as Eureka and Wearhouse 13. In terms of Stargate Universe, the SYFY channel had deemed that SGU wasn't successful enough in ratings to merit a 3rd season. However, had this not been the case , I have no doubt that SGU would have been canceled at season 5 as well. With all that being said, this goes back to my point of wishing SG1 ended at season 8 and seasons 9 and 10 being the first two seasons of a new show called Stargate Command. I have no doubt if that were to happen that we would have gotten three more stargate seasons revolving around the Ori Arch.

Unending was a fantastic finale episode, and I don't regret the way the show ended. It ran its course and I was very happy with it. If I were 100% happy with SG:1, I would be 80% happy with Atlantis, 70% entertained by Universe and, yet, 100% desperate for new live action Stargate. Here's hoping, fellow Tau'ri!

@@NinjaFlibble Agree. A series finale would include Atlantis joining the fight, a Hail Mary (John Sheppard style) battle spanning two galaxies and uniting all factions against the Ori. All known possible techs, including Earth (Asgard core), Hebridian, Jaffa, Vanir (Asgard), Travellers and others. In the series spirit, each side sees what the other can offer and promote a new alliance of peoples and races, replacing the old Four Great Races. The establishment of The New Alliance would rap up all the stories, sort of a cosmic full circle and rebirth.

If SyFy doesn't OWN the property, any show it broadcasts has at best a 4 year life span. Production costs that naturally rise as a show ages mean, in Syfy's mind,, that it's less profitable, since they aren't getting home video sales. I'm showing my age, but I remember trying to get those jerks to pick up Babylon 5:Crusade. Farscape, SGA, SGU, Dark Matter, The Expanse, just some of the shows that ascended before their time.

Every time one of these shows gets cancelled I point out the fact that in 20 years of making originals Syfy has NEVER had an original, scripted drama go over 5 seasons. But maybe more significant is the *ratio* of shows that were allowed to conclude to shows Syfy cut off without a proper conclusion. For good reason, that ratio directly correlates to the network's reputation among viewers.

Oh man. Dark Matter......... such an amazing show. Instead cancelling Killjoys that is completely horrible, they cancel Dark Matter, that was a million times better... and right when the show was going to improve a lot. I was hoping netflix or amazon could pick up dark matter but at this point, i dont think its going to happen. The Expanse fortunately was even renewed for a 5th season when the 4th is not even in air yet lol. At least we have that. SGU was horrible, the worst thing ive ever seen on tv, so im glad it was cancelled (why in hell would you want them to keep this show alive???). Farscape was an amazing show as well, but well, at least it was finished with a movie.

Jackson Muhiza Check out The Expanse and Altered Carbon, both really good sci-fi shows although nothing like any of the Stargates. The Expanse is a bit more hard sci-fi and is set purely in the Milky Way with not FTL to speak of, and Altered Carbon is like a cross between Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell with a healthy dose of old detective noir added to it.

I didn't like how season 9 started out. I didn't like how Richard Dean Anderson was no longer going to be in the show, and I thought the first half of the season was quite boring. However, as the season progressed, it got a lot better. In fact, I felt the latter half of season 9 and all of season 10 were in many ways better than seasons 1-8. Sad it never got that 11th season.

I have heard that MGM was nearly bankrupt, but maybe it was the contracts with that tv network that screwed things up. Joe Flanigan also couldn't get more Stargate shows going because someone wouldn't let him. And then MGM tried to revive Stargate by releasing that mini show about Catherine Langford but it was only available on their own video provider -- not Netflix or iTunes -- so it fizzled into obscurity...

MGM has indicated they are totally uninterested in the franchise. They want it to disappear and be forgotten. My guess is they don't want to produce such expensive shows because then people will not be happy with the other cheaper crap on tv and that stuff will have to compete with it. Remember, they're not out to make good tv, just to make money and spend as little as possible doing it. Also, there's not such a big audience anymore. Everything has splintered thus audiences are much much smaller than they used to be, generally speaking, with a few notable exceptions.

When the Ori were defeated, I though that the Ori ships were going to be put to good use against the Wraith in the Pegasus galaxy, with the Ori warriors fighting to free humans from the Wraith as Penance for their crimes. It would have been interesting to see which ships were better the Wraith bio-ships or the Ori ring ships.

S9 and S10 were really good. It could've easily lasted another 3 seasons. Lots of religious lore to explore with the Ori. Shame that SciFi killed their most popular show. I don't think I've watched any other show/series on SciFi since SG1 and Atlantis were canceled.

This is why I tell people I despise SciFi Channel in its entirety. Enemy of the genre in its own title! They cancel so many good shows for seemingly no reason, even popular shows! Whoever runs that channel needs a million slaps so they might wake up and see how dumb they are. Even Stargate Universe got better in S2, much better than the shaky start of S1. It was just starting to get its foot in, boom, dead. Repeat with other great scifi shows. SciFi channel. Never again. You are dead to me, added to the list with Belkin, BBC and BT (British Telecom). There is no getting off that list, not even reviving the series will do that. Too late, the damage has been done. Too many people have moved on now. BBC are there for cancelling Red Dwarf, on that note. Even the revived series on Dave still has nowhere near the viewership and fanbase it used to have. Only the real hardcore fanbase still remains.

Sadly this has nothing to do with scifi emselves. Its happening in all channels and even in streaming services. Money is the only thing that matters these days. If a show dont make em rich, its probably going to be cancelled sooner or later. Not sure if I'd want it to be a post-reveal world, or to start still secret somehow even all this time later, but to dig into the reveal happening live in front of us all. But to see the world of Stargate nearly twenty years later would be amazing.

claudia black and that bargain basement replacement for Jack O'Neill killed that show. They sucked. They hired two terrible actors that fans already credited for killing another series and brought them on board for some strange reason... And the writing slid downhill to write for them. And even though I'm a fan of Beau Bridges, he DID NOT fit well into this show. I don't think it's just because of the shoes he filled and how likeable Don Davis was in that role. It just didn't work on almost any level.

I have high hopes it will never lose interest as it really had that effect on people.. the other projects the producers of this show do really show they have what it takes to make some amazing stories still, and their no where near rusty even to this day. If they got the support they needed and if it is at all possible, Syfi's contract expires with SG1, it is going to be amazing what they have in store for us, and I for one cannot wait to see it!!!

I had no idea, gods dammit!! That would've been one amazing 11th season! I remember it well but at the time I just thought the producers had committed entirely to Atlantis and the new Stargate show they were already announcing - the SGU. However once Atlantis got cancelled too, and then the SGU as well, after only 2 seasons - clearly against the wishes of the producers, I got seriously pissed off at the SciFI Channel. As I recall it was about this time that the channel changed its name into SyFy Channel as if mocking us. Anyhow, I had not given those mofos a time of day ever since 2011. or 2012. until the Expanse. I had to watch that. And...of course, the dumb mofos cancelled that too! Thank god, this time the quality product wasn't their property. And no wonder...no one trusts those assholes anymore with content. I'm done with SyFy for good now.

Honestly: the Ori were an unispired repeat of the Goa'uld, Mitchel wasn't fitting in and Vala certainly didn't, in fact she alone was enough of an annoyance for me to be put off by the new seasons. General Landry was just another mediocre addition, similar to Mitchel that you kind of didn't mind enough to turn you completely off but certainly wouldn't inspire newcomers to watch the show. Unlike Jonas Quinn who seemed universally hated by old fans at his time but was honestly a great new addition with a definitively different personality compared to Jackson. Also just like SG:A Season 3, everything began to feel too cheap for its time. The sets were uninspired and looked bad just like most of the costumes, and the storylines are just really boring repeats of the same old shit WE had seen over the last decade. SG:U was a great fresh air for the franchise and horribly underappreciated by the fans. It had the better set, better effects, better storyline and especially better actors all while being a far more cerebral show. Sure we had some duds in the actor department too, but Eli and Nicolas Rush were amazing. Yes it left the light hearted popcorn Trash-Show feeling behind that Stargate had (more by accident than by design) and was a tad too brooding in its tone but was far more inspired and interesting than its predecessors at that time. I still think former fans should not have left that show sitting, especially in season 2 which was phenomenal. In short: SG-1 outlived its glory days, SG:A made a crucial mistake with the finale of season 1 happening way too soon and the storylines that followed we're kinda stale, the only reason why it felt fresher and more watchable than SG-1 season 9-10 was because of its better humour.

Had it been me the final two seasons would have been about the power vacuum left after the end of the Gouauld (Sorry for the spelling) and the secret of the stargate being revealed. The problem with the Ori was that it ended with a deus ex machina - find the magic box is not a good ending in my opinion.

I always felt the Ori were such a misstep in tone and value system for the show, which had been moving towards a more mature and compelling series about the chaos of balkanizing a Goa'uld-liberated galaxy. In particular, I think the Ark of Truth is a terrible and offensive plot--from concept to execution--and seeing it played out over more screen time would have been even worse. The idea that you could make a galaxy gun that kills everything you genetically scope it in on (re: defeat of the Goa'uld) was bad enough for simplistic contrivance, but a device that makes everyone in the galaxy believe what you believe? Nonsensical brainwashing and completely undermines the mysticism that was first associated with ascension.

+Daniel O'Donovan You point the finger at SG-1 biggest issue: The premise of the Stargate Program remaining hidden from the general public. The further the series went the less plausible it became that something like this could be run without people getting wind of it. And the grander the scope became, the more ridiculous the matter became and more terrifying the implications about the US became. It's plausible that the military can send scouting parties through a piece of alien tech without the general public knowing, but leading a war, building space-craft, that's pushing real hard on the suspension of disbelief. And the measures the military takes in the series to maintain the secrecy of the stargate programme sometime make the US look like a military dictatorship in disguise. I was always a bit disturbed about that aspect of the show and it got more uncomfortable the longer the series ran. It's why I enjoyed Atlantis more - being set in a different galaxy, allowed keeping people at home ignorant without compromising democracy there.

So even if the writers wanted to say that the secret was not going to be revealed they could have done a story where it ended up happening. Just off the top of my head a spacecraft crashing someone and seen by too many people for a coverup.

*Matthew Pena* That's the weird thing. SG1 ended up on "This TV" in the States, a very small TV network that was partly owned by MGM. They ran the entire series at least twice. It ran two episodes each week. Then, SG1 moved to a different network partly owned by MGM, and last I heard it was running on a network (also owned by MGM?) called El Rey. In the meantime, it also showed up on Showtime here and there. You can't help but wonder if SyFy lost its hold on the franchise, somehow.
