Whilst staying in Mojarca, Spain we went on a coach trip to Grenada. On the way back we stopped at a tiny hamlet, where inhabitants lived in caves and earned an income from making garden pots etc from local clay. One old man rode up to the tiny bar on a donkey. He then entertained customers telling his family history of living in the caves for generations. Apparently when a young couple wanted to set up home the parents just allowed them to dig out another room in their cave and they all lived together. He enjoyed the tips and drinks the tourists treated him to.🍷🍷 A final amusing twist as we drove away was to see tv ariels poking out of the grassy mounds above the caves.😄

@@throughlucyslens Our homes are in Missouri, a place with a lot of karst caves (geologic term). It is also possible to build earth sheltered homes on private land because many counties don't have building codes. My own family were Native American settlers in Oklahoma, prior to the forced removal labeled "The Trail of Tears". People would often build a "soddy" into a hillside because on the plains there was a lack of trees to build a log cabin. My family's old soddy from the early 1800s is still in use as a food cellar on the original homestead.

Excellent video. I had heard about these cottages before but never saw any footage so I really enjoyed your tour of them. Thank you for making this little documentary. I appreciate your thorough narration with all the history too. I’m from Ketchikan, Alaska. We have lots of wood stairs that go straight up into the mountains. You cannot drive to any of the houses on these type of boardwalk “roads” and have to take the 300+ stairs. People still live in these houses today. (They are scattered all over the place). My Gramma’s house (now my aunt lives there) is halfway up a mountain if you take the stairs. Fortunately, there is a single lane, reinforced boardwalk made from wood pilings so you can drive a vehicle up there to get to all the houses perched up on the face of the mountain. I grew up thinking everyone had stairs and wooden boardwalks stuck to mountain sides 🤣. I wonder if the children who grew up in these cave houses thought the same thing about cave houses and stairs until they got out into the world 🤔. Cheers and once again, thank you.

I’m sure other commenters have said the same, but this reminds me so much of the underground houses of Coober Pedy in Australia. Some really fascinating Coober Pedy homes show up on real estate sites from time to time, which were owned by elderly people who barely altered them over the decades. They are often even sold with assorted furniture and household objects still in place, so it is a real pleasure to look through the images, like a time capsule. Similar to the homes in your video, they are generally owner-excavated, so there is a lot of personality and individuality to each room.

What an unexpected treat! Like you, I thought these homes would be very cave like rather than homey and comfortable. Oh the places we can go Through Lucy's Lens!

They are brilliant aren't they? I was shocked how much they were like a house too - like you I think I imagined them to be prehistoric looking places!

I think it is too bad that the people were persuaded to live somewhere else where they would have to pay for everything they had for free! Thank you for this delightful tour! I subscribed because your personality is fun!

Thank you. Appreciate that a lot - and yes I wonder if they were offered a lot of money as I wouldn’t have wanted to move out!

Hi sweetie I'm Heather from Iowa USA and I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate you and your videos! I'm so glad that at 4am here your videos popped up. I LOVE history so much! My mom and I used to do genealogy when she was alive. I learned her love of learning and history. Weekends and summers were spent at the library and on old back roads to actually see where our family lived and where they were buried. I, like you, have an awe for wondering about whoever looked through the windows or touched railings and doorknobs. It's SUPER amazing. I have so many past relatives from across the pond -so to speak. I've never been but watching your videos gives me more visuals and stories for me to gobble up like candy!!!! Thank you so much!

Hey Heather, thanks so much for your lovely comment. There's such a strong connection across the pond, when I did my genealogy I had so many distant relatives in the USA and Canada now, I didn't have a clue. One day I would love to come to The States to make some videos - would be a dream come true!

@@throughlucyslens If or when you come across the pond I'd love to meet you in person! I really feel you are a wealth of untapped uniqueness!!! Thank you so kindly for sending me your response, I feel blessed by you. Do you believe in kindred spirits/friends? Just wondering. Love 💕 Heather from Iowa USA.

This is so great. We have something similar in the area where i grew up in America. We called them rock houses. And they were actually over hang caves with a large open front. And they would build a front or surrounding walls out of stacked sandstone rocks. I went to school with a girl who's father grew up in one. Thanks for sharing your adventures.😊

Wow on an overhang too! You can't even imagine getting up and down but I love how humans can make a home out of anything given the chance. - thanks so much for sharing! I am going to look those up :)
