In regards to flutter and sustain on the Ge1996t: If you use the GOTOH PSP springs that came with the GOTOH trem, they are designed with the right amount of rigidity needed for that specific bridge. The FR black noiseless springs do not have enough rigidity in them (they are essentially standard FR springs with a nominal increase in rigidity thanks to the powder coating) to balance between both the mass of the bridge/string tension on one end with the hardpoints of the claw on the other, forcing to you have to end up driving the claw screws deeper into the body to balance the bridge where it needs to be. stretching springs past their optimal tension point completely saps any flutter and sustain from the entire system. I'm surprised you got that much flutter out of that bridge with those springs, lol. If you wanna maintain the FR springs setup, add a 4th spring and backing the trem claw screws off accordingly to rebalance the tremolo will help give the bridge a chance to shine. If you are worried about the GOTOH PSP springs adding harmonics, I wouldn't worry too much. The powder coating the FR noiseless springs are given chips off over time.... and way too easily I might add... especially at points of contact, rendering the powder coating nearly useless as a noise dampener. Using soft foam under the springs, or adding heat shrink tubing inside any tremolo spring (wide enough to keep contact with the inside of the springs) are easy enough and generally perform better with unwanted harmonics than a simple powder coating because they actually acoustically decouple the springs from the points of contact as opposed to just adding paint to the raw metal. the tubing is far more aesthetically pleasing than the foam but I've realized (the hard way) that no one other than guys like us gives two sticks about how aesthetically clean out trem cavities are. 🤣 Great in depth video. IMO, The GOTOH, based on build quality alone, is as good or better when comparing it with all Floyd Rose has to offer, aside from the unobtainable (unobtanium) all titanium build FR's. Add to that the retail price disparity between the two brands of trems and I'd be willing to fork a couple middle fingers to FR for having the balls to jack up the already cringe retail price points they had. Not a damn thing in the supply and demand of FR bridges has merited a 50% and higher markup in the last 2 years.... The mostly static cost of the GOTOH and the "relative" steadiness in fluctuations of most other related guitar hardware/parts is kind of damning. I love FR bridges and I love what the brand helped develop, but as a business model , similar to what a lot of major guitar brands are doing, I find it extremely off-putting, albeit a helpful means of avoiding unnecessary purchases.

Would gotoh PSP springs on an OFR/FR1000 improve flutter over the stock springs? I’m seeing them for sale locally for cheap
@FulcrumsEdge10 ай бұрын
@@chocolaa-p2689they can. As with any component on a trem, it will depend on Your setup and how well you are able to balance the tension relationship between your strings, springs, and guitar. If you can do that, I'd say that yes, they're capable of giving any decent locking trem more flutter than standard FR springs. They have a higher tensil strength which helps them return to their zero point more consistently, and are made of alloys that give them a greater elastic limit. that elasticity is what creates the flutter effect when tension is suddenly released.

I really enjoyed your video the other day. I know exactly what you're talking about, that butter. I had a Japanese RG that was amazing. I put so much into it, Fernandez sustainer, evolution bridge pick up, scalloped frets etc.. Steve Vai would've teared up for this version of his beloved FLO... I refused to play on my friends guitars with original Floyd rose tremolo's because they said it was so much better than Ibanez or Jackson. Personally I thought Ibanez was a little smoother than Jackson, personal preference maybe. But, the original floyd rose has a certain feeling which is so beautiful and smooth, exactly like you were pointing out. You're the first person who has really demonstrated the difference between the Floyd Rose versus licensed variants. I'm assuming the term "butter" was used for the feeling of the Floyd Rose in the butt rock days. A guitarist in 2015 used the same term when he was convincing me to try one for the first time. I had a license Floyd Rose in 88 and I don't know how many I've had since and here I was not even 10 years back experiencing perfection in a floating trem system for the first time... So, I went down the rabbit hole. My questions were, "Will a Floyd Rose Special do the job? Can I rebuild a junker super straight from the 80s or 90s to compare with or surpass modern day tech? What are the differences in Floyd Roses?" And the kid in me wants to put one on a headless guitar somehow without having to spend $800 on a Sophia.. OK, pulling my head out of the rabbit hole and come to a strange conclusion. The one thing truly different is the resonance block. I'm wondering if the heavier "fat brass trem block" has everything to do with that heavier balanced field versus a licensed Ibanez, Jackson etc. the "butter"

You push it in, and then screw it down to the height you want, and then tighten the allen screw to adjust the tightness/floppiness of it. That's why it's sitting up so high. You did not screw it in, and then tighten the allen screw to adjust it. Then, you just unscrew it, and pull it back out, to take it back off.

The stud lock and the screw in arm with the allen screw to tighten it, is a better design as well. I like the Lockmeister that Schaller make, over the 1984, and definitely the 1000, because it's every bit as good as a Floyd, better made, with quality steel and hardened allen bolts as well, but at about half the price. I've had a couple of these for many years, one 6 string one on a BC Rich, and a 7 string one on a Schecter. All I can tell you is that in my experience they are fine, although the arm tends to wobble (not a problem if you don't like the bar "tight", but I do), and the hex screws are shit, so I've replaced mine with better quality ones (Schaller) and a new trem arm (also made by Schaller). The upgrades are fairly cheap, so it's not a problem, I've found. the big things with these is they actually have proper steel saddles, and a brass block as standard, unlike the crappy "Special"!!! No cracking or splitting saddles to worry about!! They aren't as good as the Original Floyd (which is ridiculously priced now) or the Schaller Lockmeister (Floyd killer, they are as good if not better than an OFR)!). I don't go crazy with the bar, and I have a light touch, so maybe if you are a heavy user and abuse it you might have a problem, but the one in my BC Rich is very good quality, and even the black coating is still intact after more than a decade.🤔😁

Sorta. Might have just been paint scraping off but not good either way imo. Anyway I sent that one back and now waiting for an E-II with an OFR. The 84 is an original floyd with brass fine tuners, brass block, old-style wood screw studs and old style arm. It's not a different product. Same quality as the original. The 1000 SUCKS (for me). Good tremolo but not great. The gotoh is awesome! i think only the saddles are hardened steel not the baseplate

They don’t advertise it, but if you get a current production ofr and 84 in your hands you’ll see what I mean. When I say current production ofr I mean ones that come on current production guitars (ofr, not 1000 series). Maybe the retail ones are as good as the 84.

@@jed_shred_guitars got 2x OFR (german made) and brand new 1000... OFR sniffs them (1000) for breakfast. However it works but not good as OFR.

Only one company makes floyd rose. That is floyd rose. The others are locking tremolo systems. Floyd rose is the name of the company not the name of the system. Everyone gets that wrong. They can be licensed by floyd rose. But it still is not a floyd rose. And make no mistake the actual floyd rose is the best hands down. Although Ibanez makes a great locking trem system. No need to upgrade it.

Floyd Rose doesn't make its own bridges. Production is entirely outsourced, so you cannot argue that only one company makes a Floyd Rose as there are several hardware companies that are contracted to manufacture bridges and locking nuts on behalf of the Floyd Rose company. And since the patents ran out some years ago, there is no longer any need to licence the locking saddle design.

@pauln6803 only a floyd rose is a floyd rose. A Kahler is a kahler not a floyd rose. It is the name of the company not just the product. Just like a band aid. That is actually the company name. Not the product. And where a company has their products made does not mean other companies become them. Many companies have their products made in Korea or China. It is still that company. Now there is licensed Floyd roses. Meaning they have the right to make their own from thier design. But it is still not a floyd rose. They are lock nut floating bridges. And Floyd rose made the first one. But no that does not make every company that makes a lock nut floating tremolo a floyd rose.

I really don't care if it flutters. It's not something that adds any musical value to anything, in my opinion. I have my GOTOH set up with enough tension that it doesn't flutter, on purpose.

My only concern is tuning stability. Is the gotoh on par with floydrose originals???

I have a lot of experience with FR original and FR licensed bridges. In my opinion, the Gotoh is a little better than the original FR, and blows the 1000 out of the water. The palm comfort and attention to detail on the Gotoh is just better, stability seems identical to the FR original, but the machining and plating are just a little better (plus you can get two Gotoh's for the price of an original FR).
