I’ve had my Cornwell square handle screwdrivers for a year and I really like them a lot. They have a comfortable grip that fits my hands well and the tips don’t show any signs of wear yet. I still have my original made in the USA Craftsman screwdriver set that I bought in the 80’s and they have been used and abused and are still working. I open paint cans, use as pry bar, chisel and on a camping trip I used two of them as tent pegs.

I’m with you on the #1 Phillips in the Matco set but they are still some of my favorite ones. I like the way the handle fits my hands the best. Plus they replace the entire thing if you break them vs just the blade.

My first set nearly 50 years ago was the Craftsman acetate handle set from Sears. Eventually the Phillips tips became damaged, and rather than warranted them, I went over to Husky drivers. Since then, I have tried many brands, and have many of the black hard handle Snap-On screwdrivers. I just recently picked up 5 of the new Craftsman acetate handle screwdrivers; they just feel so familiar, and they bring me back full circle to my young days

I really like the Carlyle screwdrivers. Tips seem well hardened. And they have the hex bolster to put a wrench on if needed. Gotta love the blue and yellow color and the soft handles are nice.

I have Vessel, and they’re very good. The biggest thing that determines screwdriver comfort, as well as that for power tools, is just how big you are. If you have big hands, and can exert more force, then you’ll like some tools than people who are smaller, with smaller hands, who can’t exert as much force, don’t like. I’m 5’8”, and not big boned. Some tools aren’t comfortable because the diameter is too big to fit my hands properly. I have bits I bought from McMaster-Carr, that are diamond plated. You’d be surprised at what a difference that makes. I hardly gave to exert any downward force on Phillips or flat head drivers. They just stay in the head.

I'm partial to the Tekton red hard-handled drivers (if only because they are impossible to break and the tips are very well made) but I also like the Carlyle drivers from NAPA. The handles are very well thought out.

Damien Coffey how have the triangular grips on the Tektons felt and performed in your hands? I wear size large in gloves; medium feels too tight on my hand. I have a set of Carlyle screwdrivers and I really like them, but Tekton is always in the back of my mind. My toolbox has become mostly Carlyle and some Tekton and Gearwrench.

I have the craftsman torx set with the clear handle, and have had them for about 25 years. One of the first tools I had to buy to do work on my 92 chevrolet c1500. They still work great to this day. I just used them before this post to remove the engine cover on my 2019 escape to change the oil. Still work great.

my 74 year old mechanic father in law has a set of klein's and they are pretty nice. I'm hoping to get them one day. they sit blade down in a leather tool bag and the neat thing is they have identifying markings on the end of the handle so you know which one to pull out. They generally are used by electricians.

Been using the vessel screwdrivers now for about a year-and-a-half. And absolutely love them working on Hondas. I read somewhere that they changed the design. An that they are backwards compatible with a pH2 and ph3 Philip head screwdrivers.

Lots of comments, we certainly have a thing for screwdrivers. I am currently not using screwdrivers professionally and I haven't tried them all yet so it isn't fair to say who is the best. Snap-on seems to be the brand to beat for quality and durability but it way expensive for what I do. As a DIY'er I have 4 different style Craftsman sets, Tekton, Wera, Wiha, Vessel, Klein, Kobalt, Channellock, Stanley and 2 styles of Felo sets and I like and dislike different things about each set. The best screwdriver to me is the one that fits in your hand comfortably, has the quality/durability you need at a price you can afford, has a warranty and makes you happy to have when you use it. My favorite now is the Channellock code blue. They are not the highest quality but they were a great price and they just fit my hand perfectly, I like the feel of the handle and they look good. Fortunately, there are many great choices and variety is the spice of life.

If you're changing the rotors on a Honda, the screw the factory uses is a Japanese style #2 ish not American #2. The Vessel screw driver that is impact works a lot better than a regular impact screwdriver.

I have gone through Craftsman USA, Husky, Napa, and finally settled with Snap On soft and hard handle screwdrivers. As a matter of fact I just had my rep replace all my soft handle ones that I had been using for over 15 years. I like the hard handle ones for the messy and greasy job. They clean up better than the soft handle ones that slowly get impregnated with oil and grease and dirt over time.

Vessel (Japan). Proper JIS 'philips', especially useful if you work on anything Asian. Also have the "IMPACTA" models - which featue an integral impact driver to break the stubborn free.

Am i the only one that snaps the snapon screw drivers like 3 times a month? Its the flathead when im either trying to turn a adjustment sleeve or spread a brake caliper the tip snaps off so easy it drives me nuts! I know it snot made for prying. But the craftsman 20$ set that i have at my house are used as prybars chisels and you name it. They bent but dont break the snapon ones just shatter! I end up getting them warrantied but for 160 a set id expect them to be stronger than they are

I like the old school snap on hard handles that came with the starter kit I purchased in school. Some of those grew legs. Still have the #1 Phillips in my cart. Vessel impacta #3 for rotor screws is awesome! No issues with the Icon set I got to help me stay on my debt free path. Kept the stubby ones at home because they are jumbo for a stubby. A few assorted ace professional as well. Most used is warrior #2 bit in m12 impact driver.

Re: the craftsman’s made in China... China gets a bad rap because, legitimately, a lot of cheap junk comes out of China. But people forget that they can also make a lot of really nice high-quality stuff too. It’s really all about the specs and the quality control. If a company has good specifications on what they want made, and has someone there to make sure that those specifications are being followed, then you can definitely get some good quality stuff out of China. Way, way, way too often in these comment sections I see people just having a knee-jerk “China = crap” reaction. It’s unfortunate.

They will cheat the quality at every turn if you are not watching. Can they make quality products? Yes. Will they make quality products if you turn your back? No.

Mac. Found one in my neighbors yard. Asked him if it was his. Asked if any neighbors were mechanics. He looked at me like I found a dollar store tool from a $1 kit. The tip on it is shaped differently than all others and works all day for everything for me. I’m not an auto mechanic but mechanical for work. I don’t know if I found a Japanese tip or if all Mac are like that but I’d buy the whole set at Mac price if I knew how to buy the rest.

First set of screwdrivers I had came with the craftsmen tool set I bought when I first started wrenching for a living. I think about 500 pieces. Screwdrivers didn't last at all. I then bought a Snap-On set like your orange handle one that I used for about 10 or 12 years before I took them because I wanted a good set at home. I replaced them with the same thing just changed handle color. I used that set for another 10 years until I changed professions

Japanese phillips have a different profile. I own and work on a lot of old japanese bikes and cars and I would not work on them w/out my Vessel JIS screwdrivers. I also really like my red soft handle Instinct snapon screwdriver. Feels good in my hand.

I prefer the hex on the shaft for additional leverage; using the closed-end of a combination wrench allows you to apply more force to the screwdriver. Another issue is that the hole through a comfort handle may allow too much flexing to remove a really stubborn screw. A better way would be to use a Phillips socket or a flat-blade socket (depending on the screw type, of course). It puts you closer to the screw during removal (less force is lost), and you can really crank on it with a 3/8"- or 1/2"-drive ratchet/breaker bar. If needed, a short extension can give you extra length if other objects are in the way. It's also helpful to have right-angle (90 degree) screwdrivers, as well; sometimes they work when nothing else will. Screwdrivers are screwdrivers; find whatever brand(s) work best for you (comparing use and cost considerations) and buy them. Like most, I've got sets or individual screwdrivers from several brands, and all work well for me. Just stay away from the cheap stuff and you'll be fine.

I do have Vessel screwdrivers and they're great; however, I also still have my antique and original Phillips screwdrivers, that have the primitive wooden handles! The original Phillips with the wood are still holding up, and have not skipped a beat, but the little cone separator sometimes comes loose! I just keep putting it back when it loosens. I also still have all my Craftman's and my old hard plastic Snap-On squares. It is true that a good screwdriver can make life a lot easier, when you need them! Take care Bro!

I use a combination of Snap-on instinct handles, Wera, and Craftsman acetate. Wera has a great grip for smaller screwdrivers. Snap-on is great for pure strength and tip grip. The Craftsman set is good if you need a low profile.

Hello again Justin I think most of my screwdrivers are from Walmart. The Popular Mechanic Screwdrivers. They have worked well, I have no issues to report. I brought them for the same reason you mentioned. The #1, #2 and #3 Phillips screwdrivers have the Grip teeth, that grip the screw and don't strip the screw head. Mine are about twenty years old. The only professional drivers I used were Kleins but they all wear out eventually. Good tip to get by using worn out Phillips drivers is lapping compound. It usually works.

As an Electrician I love the hell out of my Klein the round acetate with rubber is just great to grip been using them for 20 years ( ironically they replaced my Snap On hard handle ) now HF has just recently released a Doyle acetate rubber handle “Klein clone” which I’m field testing currently. Klein made in USA warranty at Home Depot or electric supply stores.

I own all the tool truck ones but like you said the Snap on's are the trusted ones I have the real old small square black handle ones from the early 80s and the larger square handle ones . for the most part I prefer the Mac tools ones they are small square red handle had them for over 25 years. Milwaukee screwdrivers are good too. 8 piece set at home depot for $20, but I also have the so red and black soft handle, which are very nice too. Used matco ones, which are good but not as fancy as so. Cornwell flats are wierd in the hand. So hard handle are nice but not for everyday use. I prefer a comfort grip when I can get it. My hands will thank me after a while.

Let me preface by saying this opinion is coming from an industrial/commercial electrician, primary controls and instrumentation these days, but still occasionally set gear and run conduit. Went from Klein to wiha, loved the wiha drivers. Few years ago went with PB Swiss for my driver's. Unbeatable. I've NEVER had a #2 Phillips last longer than the first PBswiss I bought. Now have a bunch- insulated, 6" long, 4 " long, etc. Can't beat them for drivers. Their Swiss grip handle and material are unmatched, literally feels good in your hand, not just the shape- the santoprene or whatever is a great non slip material. Hollow ground flat heads grip flat heads like no other- and the electrical industry is still majority flat head and #2 Phillips.

I like my mid 1980s era Craftsman gray over mold rubber acrylic handle. More of a hexagonal shape grip. I've had a few other sets over the years, but keep coming back to these. They have a square shaft so you could put a box wrench on it if need be, though I've never had a reason to do that. For the more "modern" dedicated torx drivers I use and like Wiha (I also prefer their bit sets) but use a Wera ratcheting bit driver.

I have a drawer full of the old Craftsman screwdrivers that we all know that I use as rough use, I have a Tekton "High-Torque" set that I use for easily accessible screws due to comfort and finally a Vessel set of cross heads only (4 piece) that I use for most all cross head applications aside from the more abusive ones. I use Vessel P3 bits with impact driver for rotor screws, never a problem.

I have to agree with you on the square handle Snap-On ...still have the set I bought 34yrs ago and they are still like new ...best grip and fit the fasteners perfect... definitely the best screwdrivers. I’ve really struggled with finding a set I really like. Bought a set of craftsman because I grew up with the name. Sadly the quality had drastically dropped and the first week I had them I broke the handle off the biggest Philips in the set. Loved the feel of the handle though. At the moment I’m trying a set of Lenox screwdrivers, so far I’ve had great success with them. So far. Thanks for the video, great information.
