I like manual transmissions. Always have. I have owned more manual trans than automatics.. i feel much more a part of the car shifting myself. Plus here in wisconsin if you go over a icy bridge i like that i can just push in the clutch and have no reason to spin or lose control.

Considering everything, cost, performance, smoothness, range of application etc the best transmission in today's world in ZF 8HP models. Pretty reliable, better fuel efficiency than manuals, very smooth changing gears, almost as fast as dual clutch transmissions. ZF got the best of both worlds. That's why they are installed in BMW, GM, Toyota, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Aston Martin, Dodge/Chrysler, Lambos, Land Rover, Porsche, VW, Rolls and more....

The ZF 8 Speed. And the way Dodge has that Calibrated with the Durango riding on that Mercedes Chassis is pretty sweet, and I only have the V6. Its kind of fast but really quick and great on Gas for the power that you get.

My parents had a 1958 Chevrolet that had something like a CVT, but it was hydraulic. It had 3 turbines and the transmission could valve the fluid to 2 of the turbines at the same time, in any proportion that was needed. It did not have definite shifts that could be felt. The car just went faster, accelerating but the engine speed remained about the same. It was called the Turboglide. My Dad called it other things as they had reliability problems. Eventually he had a Powerglide installed.

Lexus/Toyota for automatics and still excellent for manuals. Manual trans, are reliable on many models but Honda makes them very well, they're so smooth from clutch pedal and shifting.

My wife's Nissan Murano SL had it's CVT crater at 61,000 miles. Nissan would not even look at it because they said we were over the warranty mileage. We had to take it to Katy Transmission. The owner said he had a total of six Nissan CVT vehicles that were waiting to be repaired. I was told that Nissan had a high rate of CVT failures.

Scotty, you would love this. When I was still a very green Mech. Engineer I worked with an old pump and motors engineer and we installed and adjusted an Allis Chalmers 2 million gallon a day pump and motor. It used a flow meter and Pneumatic controls to control the pumps 18 in. radius disc in and out and had two huge serpentine belts that controlled the flow complicated with the fact the motor was also two speed. I had to learn to maintain two of these and keep the valves adjusted correctly. The thing was about five feet high and the plants overhear crane helped us lift the motor off for service. The belts were a new fangled technology in 1975, four inches wide and costing 800 dollars back then. I was in LOVE.

We have a 2002 Nissan Sentra XE with a 4 speed auto, a 2019 Kia Soul with a 6 speed auto and a 2018 Civic Sedan with a CVT in our driveway. The Sentra has been extremely dependable over the years and that trany is bulletproof, Kia’s transmission is so smooth and like a nice elastic feeling when driving hard... The Civic is the worst car we’ve ever owned since Honda replaced 6 times some defective bearings in the CVT and at the 7 time they replaced the whole transmission.

The ZF 8 speed auto is a solid box and has been used in every BMW for the last decade. It handles anything from the 258 lbs-ft of the 2.0l I4 to the 553 lbs-ft of the 4.4l V8 M engine.

I've owned alot of cars and trucks and as others have said, by far the finest automatic transmission is the ZF 8HP (made in Germany and supplied for many high-end carmakers such as BMW, Maserati, Rolls-Royce, etc). This beauty is made in different torque capacities, for example I discovered this transmission is in my RAM1500 where it creates the most AWESOME drivetrain and really shows just how shitty the transmissions are in GM & Ford trucks. Then - it is also in my 2020 Dodge Charger Scat Pack - a fast and fun car and same thing it's the FINEST!

The 4 speed 4l60e was not a bad transmission unless you raced it all the time. I have an automatic Corvette with that transmission lol. I think the last owner had the transmission rebuilt by someone who knew how to modify them a bit because it shifts really quick and smooth. Also has fresh, red ATF when I checked the fill plug. It already had over 130k miles.

Yeah, and when you need to rebuild the 6 speed, it is easily twice the price. No thanks. The 4 speed is more than enough ratios with lockup as a virtual 5th gear. My father in law calls lockup a "paper gear" I guess because on paper it serves as another ratio. Or maybe because it's as flimsy as a gear made from paper...

It's hard for me to explain but have any of you ever drove an old 4 cylinder escort, or Honda civic automatic where the car is always struggling to maintain speed by downshifting all the time? That's what my 2013 silverado feels like with this 6speed. Same 5.3 actually more powerful the my 01 5.3. The 01 4speed overdrive was just a much nicer ride all around.

I hear ya, still got my 2000. Simple and solid V8 running on all cylinders, 4 speed tranny and old school rear end. Going on 21 years now. And I just got a '14 Scion XB with a big overbuilt fuel injected inline 4 with 4 speed Aisin auto. No turbo, GDI or multi speed or CVT. I dread the day I may have to buy some new cookie cutter plumbers nightmare. I'll look for a barn find 1st.

On an unrelated note: Scotty, I'm not too much of a car guy. I grew up in a single-parent home with a mom who was too afraid that anything would be messed up to let me do basically anything other than checking the oil. I'm now well into adulthood, to put it lightly. I don't have much in the way of tools or knowledge. What is your recommendation for someone -- basically anyone -- who wants to become more knowledgeable about their vehicle? I'm several decades behind people who grew up with learning stuff as a kid, and only last month did I do my first ever oil change on a vehicle, and I hate starting from scratch but that's where we all have to start. I want to learn, and I want a professional's advice on where.

Americans don't get the Global sales option to buy a good Peugeot or Citroen. KZbin has lots of videos of pro rally champions based on those cars we cannot buy here. I've never had any issues with Nissan Manual transmissions. From my 1983 Datsun 200SX, 95 Nissan XE Frontier, 2007 and 2010 Nissan Frontiers. I still prefer manual transmissions. 2021 Nissan trucks no longer have the Manual transmission option, but Toyotas still do.

Had a Nissan Safari Grand Road 4.2 diesel with a 5 speed Manuel gearbox when I sold it the mileage was 390,000 thousand and was still running perfectly motor and gearbox. Always serviced.

The CVT is not the transmission I would ever consider. The manual transmission is very reliable and still offered in high performance German cars like Porsche and are fun to use but most women don't like using them and they're being supplanted by auto-manual gear boxes or full auto by most manufacturers including BMW. Everyone has different taste but out of convenience and stop and go traffic I do prefer the auto or automated manual as there is a lot of wear and tare on the clutch in these driving situations. The electric vehicles of the future may offer a different transmission perhaps not yet patented. Good review.

The ZF 8HP is a solid transmission. I have found them to be bulletproof and extremely efficient, the can shift is about 100ms and I love mine.

That is a stout box for sure, the 6R80, and GM 6L80/90 variants are strong as hell too. Not withstanding GMs 8L90 and the new 10spd 10R80/10L80 from them both. I believe Ford holds the strongest trans though with the 6R140 and 10R140 both being seriously stout units.

My 2020 Hyundai Kona was at Reliable Hyundai in Springfield Missouri for over 1 1/2 years. It only had 6500 miles on it and under full warranty. The dealership experience was horrible. The excuse, week after week, month after month, was that the couldn’t get approval from Hyundai Customer Care. Only after getting an attorney involved, did they finally take the car back. During that time, they didn’t give me a loaner vehicle. I spent over $16,000 for 1 1/2 years of rental car expenses. I was expecting full reimbursement, but they only reimbursed $4000. What a scam! I finally went down the street and bought a Toyota Camry. I learned a lesson. I hope you avoid what I experienced.

Allison does make a supreme large land-based vehicle transmission.During the late seventies early eighties, it took 40 man hours tear down for the off road ten speeds and 40 man hours to put it back in operation.Clean rooms were required for the perfect job Most were in a truck dealership .Six speed for road trucks , ten for dirt and gravel haulers. I wonder what the cost is to redo a GM or ford pickup these days ?

Just one point, the fluid coupling is not sealed on modern auto transmissions. It is filled and drained when selecting direction and neutral. Old auto transmissions 25-30 yes ago did have separated sealed fluid couplings.

There is a honda dealership near me that offers a life time warranty for the drive train for ONLY new vehicles. So CVT or whatever, you're covered!

You may want to ask them what they're definition of lifetime is. Is labor covered, or just the transmission? Do they give you a new, rebuilt or used transmission? Are you required to have your vehicle serviced at the dealership to qualify? Is there a per year mileage cap? What types of failures are covered? Is there a time to completion guarantee? Do you pay extra for the warranty? Does everyone qualify for the warranty, or is it based on something like your credit score? Does the dealership reserve the right to cancel this program if they so choose? I'm a dealership technician. You are not going to get free transmissions for the rest of your life. You will pay for it. Its just a matter of how.

My dad had a '51 Plymouth with a semi-automatic, fluid drive transmission with a two-speed low range and a two-speed high range and a clutch. Clutch only needed when changing from low to high range or reverse.

Had a 1994 Toyota Camry come to my job today.... 279,689 miles on it... looked rough not taken care of dash cracked etc... drove great manual transmission shifted smoothly... I was amazed. Then I drove a Chevy Cruze with 17,000 miles. The old Toyota drove better.

A manual... that's the damn answer. I'd rather replace a clutch instead of a whole transmission. The clutch in my car is still good at nearly 200k and the pack replacement is only 350 bucks. I don't find manuals to be difficult in stop and go traffic. It forces me to be patient and find more times to just crawl in 1st or 2nd. I actually get really impatient in an automatic.

My 50 years experience shows that the manual transmission is the most reliable and the best modern manual transmission is the five speed built by Tremic. The automatic transmission is usually reliable during the life of the vehicle and my pick for the best made automatic transmission is the six speed Allison transmission. Like Scotty said, the CVT transmission is the weakest transmission that is made so by the steel drive belt that is being stretched and squeezed on the spindle. The overall reliability is yet to be determined and will be after enough time has gone by.

I’m a 40 year auto tech and I couldn’t agree more. Problem is the arthritis in my left foot has forced me to get away from a manual. I’m old 😂. Sooo, I choose an automatic which my favorite is the ZF 8HP trans. Absolutely bullet proof and has 8 wonderful ratios and the WHOLE WORLD is using it.
