Can agree with the 3800 mention. 98 Le Sabre owner, bought to flip. Fell in love with it instead. Tons of room to work on it, nothing in the way of trans/engine fluid pans. Only had to clean the throttle body and MAF. Runs like a champ.

Most definitely! HONDA all the way. My civic went to 380k miles until someone turned in front of me. Now I drive a first gen Honda Pilot with a V6 J35 A engine. V-Tech...Honda is the original on that one which is why only they can call their engines V-Tech. 231k miles on my 03 Pilot. Best engine maker in the WORLD, even Scotty admits it in some of his videos against Toyota. He never disses Toyota but hes got to tell the truth :) Good comment!

Been looking at the new Avalon with the 3.5 upgraded to 301 hp using both direct and port injection and a new 8 speed auto. Currently own a 2012 Genesis sedan with a 333 hp 3.8 litre V6 and 8 sp auto. So far I have had 123 000 reliable kilometres. Now, if I can just overlook the snout on that new Avalon..... but I’m good for at least another 2 or 3 years with my Genny so there may be a mid cycle refresh on the Avalon by then.

KZbin Paul : Absolutely agree. The greatest competition for the Avalon may very well come from Toyota’s own upscale division. It’s only a small step up in price. Look at a map of Canada. The most easterly part is a big beautiful island called Newfoundland. Not one Lexus dealer in our province. Wonderful place for a visit.

J Series v6 is by far the best v6 ever made. Extremely reliable, easy to work on, versatile enough for cars to suvs. Only downsides is the fuel economy isn't quite as good as more modern v6s, and when they started doing the stupid VCM they started burning oil like every other cylinder deactivation engines.

@Carter Thiessen, I have ongoing good experiences with the Honda J Series motors. I’ve had Hondas & Acuras with the 3.0L, the 3.2L, and a couple of the 3.5L models. The J32A3 on my ‘06 TL is going strong w/o issues, and delivers 32 mpg on the highway w/o burning oil. The only downside is the use of timing belts that must be replaced every 100K miles or so.

The Toyota/Lexus 2GR 3.5L V6 is still a gold standard in the class. It is quite a bit older than many newer rivals but as Scotty stated the engine blends fuel economy, power, reliability, smoothness and NVH into a great flexible package that works in everything from a Camry, Highlander, RX350, LS500h to even a Lotus Evora in supercharged form.

I didn't even have to watch the video to know that only Toyota products would be the best. I was amazed that he even mentioned the Nissan V6. I know a lot of Nissan 3.5L and 3.7L powered cars, especially the RWD models, like the G35 / 37 and 350 / 370Z that have over 200K on them and still run like a clock. My 2004 350Z has over 130K miles on it and burns no oil. It runs perfect. It is all about maintenance. A friend has a Honda Odyssey with over 200K on it's 3.5L V6 and that engine still runs perfect and burns no oil.

Owned an 02 altima with that motor, beat the snot out of it every day for 16 years and it never once let me down. Which is impressive considering it had a bunch of bolt on parts as well. Those engines have no problem running to 250-300k.

Fun fact: mitsubishi made the worlds smallest production v6. The 6a10 was a 1.6 liter v6 found in the mitsubishi lancer mx saloon, but my favorite small v6 is the engine above the 6a10, its the 2 liter 6a12. It was found in the mitsubishi fto it has an 8000rpm redline, 200hp, and with the right exhaust, it can sing a beautiful song.

I purchased a Toyota Highlander and the V-6 had to be replaced within two years. On the other hand, I have been purchasing Mitsubishi V-6 products since 1990. I had no problems with any engines, Evan those with over a quarter million miles. My current Mitsubishi has almost 200K, and the only service is oil and filter change every 5K miles. It's quiet, efficient, powerful and reliable. I'll take a Mitsubishi every time!

3800s are ok but they have a lot of small bullshit problems that are usually cheap and easy to fix. I have a series 3 and other than the cooling system being atrociously unreliable, the engine itself runs great.

I had a Pontiac Trans Sport with the 3800 engine. I took it to about 297,000 miles. Great engine, but it had a bad oil leak. Ultimately it was the transmission and other smaller problems that made me retire that van.

I also really like the Honda J-series engines. I have 270,000 on one in my Acura MDX and it is still running strong. The only complaint is the timing belt that needs to be changed. I haven't decided if I will change it at 300,000 or just run it until it finally stops.

I bought a 2012 Chrysler 300c V6 with 8 speed. (Australia) 12 years later, still driving that same car. Just drove it for 3 hours and that baby just purrs. Plenty of power for me.. Very economical on highway and a nice quiet ride. My personal experience is awesome. Not sure why you rated it as "avoid". I am elderly, so feather the accelerator and go easy on braking. Maybe my driving style preserved my old V6 Chrysler. Get amazing mileage out of tyres. The first battery lasted 7 years. No repairs in 12 years, just services.

DE-K is the actual best modern v6 gasoline ever made and also in the one of the best cars within memory, period. There's nothing on the actual engine that needs repaired. Yeah, you might need a couple coil packs and you need to bypass the retarded TB coolant and unplug electric engine mounts...but the engine itself is virtually flawless. Use 40/50 weight oil and you'll have it till you're in the nursing home (plenty of people well over 400k and some even on the original automatic). Fuel economy is good, too. I got 24 mpg driving through the Appalachians at 85 mph and 28 mpg at 80-85 through the rolling hills. You can do the math on what that translates to at normal highway speed :D. Honda is selling piss poor turbo 4s that can barely beat that and still don't have power.

I know they don't make the GM 3800 II any more, but it has tpo be one of the best V-6's ever built. I put nearly 300,000 on a 99 Regal with out a hitch. Changed the oil and filter every 3,000 and it never used a drop of oil. Too bad the Buick wasn't as good as the old dear kind of rusted out (Michigan winters!). Actually, the only bad Buick (I've had them since 79) was an 87 Century T-Type...yow!

Yep the L36 in a Holden Commodore is about reliable as it gets. 450,000km about 1/10 of its life towing 1.5 tons. No engine or transmission problems. Only got rid of it to get a newer one.

Used to own an 86 Buick LeSabre in the early 2000s. Can confirm. Was not the Series II engine, but it ran really well. When I got the car the odometer was stuck at about 205,000 miles. I don't know for how long it was stuck, but I drove the car for years. Also worked on the car during those years, replacing gaskets and hoses over time, but the internals were still very good from what I can tell.

Try a ford 300. That straight six is slow but 75,000 is breaking it in. I've had one for years, 14 or 15. Bought it with unknown miles in non running condition. Had an issue with the fuel pump leaking and carburetor. Paid $300 for it, it was retired to being an old farm truck for the seller. It never gave me trouble as a daily. Stuff around it, typical stuff like the starter, voltage regulator were a different story. That engine though never burnt the first drop of oil. I still own it but have opted for a ranger a few years ago. It after almost completely parking it blow a head gasket on me. I drove it about an hourish getting home, stopping to put water in it when the temp got too high. I just put a new gasket on, in an afternoon btw, and called it good. It's still running fine after that. That engine is outlasting the body at this point. I call it my trusty rusty lol.

Scotty Is a 100% correct the best Bang for The Buck by far is a 2007-2013 Lexus ES 350 when it comes to a luxury sedan. We drive a used Ultra Luxury model. 90% of the people think we pay far more for our cars than we really do. If you look for a deal you can find a ES350 that was close to $50K new for $10K. It will have under 100,000 miles and if you drive it normally you can get 8 to 10 trouble free years of service out of them if not much more!

I'm very impressed with my 3.5 6 cylinder in my 2010 Rav4 with 105k miles as of today. It is simply awe inspiring. Besides being almost 10 years old it is like new. It has incredible acceleration that puts me on a head trip everytime. Like he says, it is all around great engine. I get up to 31 mpg at times and that's very impressive for an AWD vehicle. It has a 5 speed automatic with over drive as well. I've never experienced anything like it. Although, just having saved $2500 doing tuneup myself instead of dealer, I was disappointed that you have to take off intake plenum to get to rear 3 plugs and coils. Also one of the brand new OEM toyota/lexus Denso coils was bad and i had to tear it down again to replace it. Goes to show you nothing is perfect, not even Toyota, but it's the best I've come across.

CleverestWitch2188 3.24.19. The plastic framed lower intake manifold gaskets (L.I.M.) failed do to owners going too long on the DexCool coolant 150k/5yrs❗️......GM recommendation ™️‼️. Change out the L.I.M. Gaskets with the metal framed ones, and switch out the “DexKill” coolant ..... to the long life mixes with any type, and go no longer than 2yrs/36k miles!

I do love the power & smoothness of the 2GR-FE V6 in my 2011 Toyota Camry SE, but as a do-it-yourself-er, it is a pain arse to change the spark plugs because you have to remove the upper intake to access the rear three spark plugs! And, to replace the alternator, you have to remove the cooling fan, radiator, and bumper!

Best long-term vehicle I ever owned was a 98 Dodge Grand Caravan that I sold with 256000 miles on it. I got 20 miles per gallon in the city with it as long as I wasn't stuck in traffic, and I was able to get 31 and 1/2 miles to gallon on the freeway with it. With just running synthetic oil a more open air cleaner and unshrouded plugs.

My 04 Impala has 218,000 miles plus on it and runs like it's fresh off the lot. My 07 grand prix has 188,000 miles and it's a beautiful car. I can drive 4 hours on my Impala without running out of gas and 8 hours on my Pontiac without running out of gas. The reason my cars run forever is because I replace ever failing part immediately. You are absolutely correct. I had a 2014 KIA optima EX and I bought a 98 ES300 to use as a beater. After driving the 22year old Lexus, I just became a huge fan. The sound insulation on these Lexus are incredible. I was spoiled by the comfortable ride from a 22 year old car with 150k miles that I ended up selling my 2014 KIA optima later. Oil change negligence is the only thing that can kill these 1MZFE engines.

In my opinion it is definitely worth keeping on to. Why get rid of something that gives you good service. The J- series would definitely be my pick, but only those WITHOUT VCM!!!(V6 6MT Coupes). Those 3800 GM engines, I always had to do intake manifold gaskets on them, annoying AF. 2GRs always need water pumps but otherwise reliable. VQ is a total POS. Valley gaskets leak, water pumps are a pita to service, had numerous ones come in with VVT issues. Oil consumption prob due to piston oil rings. They sound like tractor engines, Nissan is junk now-a-days.

VQ engines are the best still in production, the underlying design has been the same for so long. So much potential power and many applications. Nissan is basically being held up by the VQ platform at this point

My 06 Toyota Sienna 3.3 l V6 3MZ engine has 191k miles. Bought it since new and maintain it myself. Regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance , timing belt , spark plugs and so on. At 55mph I get 30mpg. At 65 I get 27 mpg , 70 -75mph 25-26 mpg. Around town it drops to 17-18 mpg. Not bad for a 15 yr old van. Drives like new

i got a 3.0L Ford Duratec V6 engine in my 06 mazda tribute. it has 168k miles on it and still runs good.

Scotty would never agree but the Chrysler 3.6 V6 is awesome. Compact, 300 horsepower, tons of torque, timing chain not a belt.

Are you referring to the Pentastar? Because you're right! Plus it's port injected instead of direct, so the intake valves won't get stuck open from carbon at 100,000 miles. It has piston oil squirters as well, and a couple other things that make it seem like they actually designed the engine to west. There's a video on KZbin of a guy tearing one down from a delivery van with over 600,000 miles on it.

@Max Flynn 40000 miles put on this taurus since I bought the pos. I've put 2 quarts of oil in over that time ocassionally coolant and drive to flint from jackson everyday no problems

I got a 1998 isuzu rodeo 3.2l v6 with 400k ish miles and runs as smooth as new and the only problems it had was a bad water pump and a/c compressor but it still has never broke down and never burned any oil still doesn't leak anything to this day

TORRIS CHAPPELL I have 3.8 in 2004 Grand Prix i change oil every 5000-6000 km using what ever synthetic is on sale and good quality oil filter with a red silicone anti drain back valve which I get from auto parts store I have 400000 on the engine and it uses no oil .Parts for the car are cheap and I oil spray the body and undercarriage panels with vedge canola oil yearly missing nothing after a good power washing and it should be environmentally friendly I do it in July or August when it its hot and dry so no thinning is required . Also a supervisor I work with has a 2006 Grand Prix his is good too he has over 250,000 on his

I had an 03 Maxima GLE, great car! Had it for 5 years only thing I did to it was the usual maintenance and replaced the starter. Very reliable, very smooth. Sold it, now I have an Avalon with the 2GR-FE V6 also a great engine...super smooth.

I have a Ford 500 Limited FWD, 3.0L 4V, V6 Duratec with 225k miles and it runs like new. Bought the car for $1750 almost 2 years ago. Drive it daily and not one problem yet!! 15 years old!! Not a spec of rust, 5 new 255/55R18's. All oil changes were documented. It was owned by an older couple and they kept EVERYTHING!! Incredible condition for a 2005 Scotty!! I know this car was never beat on and has a lot of highway miles. They drove from Tennessee to Ohio often they told me. They were asking $2000 and dropped to $1750 when they saw I was a Veteran which was very nice of them. I wasn't even going to haggle!! Thanks for your videos Scotty. You have saved many people much money and stress!!

Although I prefer V8's like the 1uz-fe in my old 2000 LS 400 or the 3uz-fe in the LS 430 I plan to buy soon. But back to V6's the 3800 in my Buick Lucerne was one efficient machine, cruising at 1900 RPM at 75 MPH. Can't beat low end torque. My LS 400 was the exact same way, and they both got 28 mpg easily, the LS doing a bit better. I always got great mileage because I am a conservative driver. Awesome video Scotty!

james adams BTRplay Although he’s right, on a Lexus V8 1UZ-FE, a starter repair job is a royal pain; that V8 engine will generally last longer than the Lexus V6.
