They used to sit outside their houses and play the banjoes with one another from across the ‘holler’. Imagining them doing that makes me happy; realizing how many years Grandpa Jones went without his best friend breaks my heart.

IIRC, one or both of them got the death penalty. The death penalty was halted nationwide during that time and resulted in a life sentence. One was paroled in 2014.

Jan Howard, pictured at one of the parole hearings in this documentary, recently passed in 2020 just 15 days past her 91st b'day. Jan appeared at every one of the parole hearings to speak out against releasing the Brown's on parole. Like all Opry members, Jan most especially loved and admired Stringbean, and, having performed on the Opry the same night that String was murdered, she was very upset that the surviving Brown was released in 2014 (as were many others, including myself). God rest Ms. Howard and STringbean and Estelle Akeman -- together again at long last.

I, myself, was not a big country music fan, I was more into rock and roll, but my grandfather was an old time country fiddler, so I was used to hearing him play. I remember when we would visit them on weekends, I was a teenager then, and they would watch Heehaw religiously. I also watched it, even at home. It was a funny show, and I was exposed to a lot of great country music, which I liked despite my predilection for rock music. Roy Clark was a great guitarist and banjo player by anyone's standards. As a guitarist myself, I started playing some county tunes myself, because most of the songs were pretty straightforwardl and simple, usually a 3 chord progression. My grandfather heard me, and asked me to play with him. We recorded a lot of old standards at his house, and it was great fun. Of course, he passed a long time ago, but I still have the tapes!

I lived in the house String bean was murdered in when CMN filmed a documentary on the murders, after it aired a bunch of police officers, and detectives all showered up with the original police files to show inaccuracies I seen the morgue pictures with the steel rods in the body's ect.she was shot 3 times not twice, and the money was found chewed up by mice estamated at $26,000 the top of the fireplace mantel lifts up on left side. I lifted it and have seen the shredded money pieces.Along with her cooking recipes wrote on inside of kitchen cabinets, and cop,and use pulled back paneling when the phone was to see where the wrote all the stars phone numbers. What a shame the to happen to such good people.

It's a Travesty of Justice when a sweet innocent couple that was String Bean and his wife who was driving him back home after a performance at the Grand Old Opry and unfortunately two vicious thugs killers waited not only to Rob him but to kill them no matter what yarn they spun they had cut the phones lines in their cabin they murdered String Bean and viciously as his wife was pleading for mercy they shot her in the head execution style because no matter what the poor prosecution and the Jury believed they never had any intention of leaving witnesses they should have gotten the death penalty or at the very least Life without parole but the state of Tennessee didn't dispense real Justice.

The one that died in prison (some justice). The other one that got to get out of prison, he is a better person (should not ever seen the light of day again). Stringbean and his wife did not get to, where have they been all along!? The one that got out, is he the one that shot Stringbean's wife in the back, trying to get away in their yard? It has been said, these murders have left a bad taste in Nashville, it will always! There is judgement day to come! It will never be enough justice or closure!

@@gravedigr12 Jesus Christ doesn't agree, provided that the guy who was involved actually *IS* repentant about it and isn't lying. Much that is in this world shouldn't have existed, but it does, and a rescue from what's wrong is going to require all a person has. "Everything" includes hatred for people who did wrong in one way or another, big or small, and we all did *something* wrong at some time. It's just not evident in all cases. We've also all been messed with at some point. If he's repentant, great, but he still ruined what he never should have. If he's not repentant and is lying, that's more than sad. Jesus came to die for people's sins, *including* Brown's. But some won't accept it, or they look and they don't quite understand right away. Ever wonder why there's a verse where Jesus is like "Jerusalem, stoner of the prophets who are sent to you... I would have put my wing over you as a mother bird guards her children?" Well, it was *not* to protect murder, *not at all,* that much I can say. Otherwise, "thou shalt not murder" wouldn't be in the 10 commandments in Exodus 20 and also later on.

I was only 7 years old myself when this happened. I remember it and the uneasiness it had put in my father's conversations with his friends about safety. Even though we were in Arkansas. Jesus Christ doesn't agree on the "no forgiveness" part, you're thinking Brown or someone else is going to be murdering again because of this but that's not necessarily true. If he's repentant, good, but he still ruined what he never should have. If he's not repentant and is lying, terrible. Heaven's full of repentant people which could potentially include Brown (who wouldn't be murdery or thiefy if included. Not because of a dictatorship, mind.) Otherwise, Jesus wouldn't have lamented like "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, stoner of the prophets who are sent to you - I would have kept you as a mother bird puts her wing around her young." That's about wanting to protect people who are rejecting him, but being incapable of doing so.

@@101Volts Deterrant. If everyone was on "your page" we would not have this problem. Unfortunately, we aren't as a society. It begins with "you" at every level. These robbers could have been a bit less cruel and they weren't so the law needs to be less cruel. Deal with the same measures.
