Native son here i know this cable car well..was a bike messenger and would blow a compresses boat air horn thri the bottom kearny st .. made to croud move fast on the way back up had a rope tied to my handle bars would tie it to the handle on the cable cae near the side rear go all the way back up....try hyde st hill in the wharf area near beach st...twice as long twice as fast tourists almost sh&%it....locals lov it...😅😅😅😅😅

This is a cable car and it's literally driven by a cable buried in a channel between the rails. SF has three cable car lines like this one. There is also a separate historic streetcar system with two lines that run historic electric streetcars. mostly PCCs from the 30s and 40s. It's like a rolling museum. And in addition to that, SF has a light rail system - the Muni Metro, and a proper heavy rail regional subway - BART. The Muni Metro runs mostly underground in a subway in the city center. You can only see it at street level in the outer suburbs.
