Sorry but the utter guff of wanting a strong them to make us better in Europe is the poison in our clubs thinking just now & needs ripped out. We would be better if we bought quality not constant projects that's a fact. As for them we should never have them in our thought process we should have our foot on their throat & never take it off cause u could bet your life they would obliterate us given the chance. We are THE big club so act like it the rest can either catch up or that's just tough.

@@TheCelticExchange I get that would be great but that those clubs problems we shouldn't stand still waiting on them hoping they get better when we could make ourselves better by buying a better standard of player. What level of competition is acceptable that they're good enough to always finish second cause you'll be hard pushed to find a tim celebrating them winning a title cause it's good for competition.

@12 mins … I disagree with David when he says the financial gap is unhealthy. When the old club died .. our focus should have been entirely on European football … consistently in the last 32 or 16 … that’s were the real money is and looking to the future of a change in European formats . A last 32 /16 European standard of team would walk the SPL every year . Sure the dark side would absolutely hate that , and the competitive nature of Scottish football would be frowned upon , but it is now .. a two horse race and ridiculed . We need to learn to survive in the bigger waters of a new European competition. HH
@davidkelly790
@davidkelly790 5 ай бұрын
It's only unhealthy because we make it that way. The failure in Europe is a fallacy, rangers made the Europa league final a couple of seasons ago (and failed to win the league that season as well). It's an issue because the club doesn't do many things properly. Our training facilities and youth set up are amateur level considering the money available. A club with £70million in the bank playing in northern europe and we don't have a single full size indoor pitch, that's embarrassing. I wonder if the financial gap was highlighted as much when rangers were in bed with the banks and avoiding paying tax and hoovering up trophies and champions league cash? Sorry if it seems like I'm having a go at you btw, I'm not. I'm having a go at the idea floated in this interview that we can't do anything in Europe because we have less competition in domestic football. Us celtic fans have spent so many years listening to excuses that we have started to swallow some of them, they aren't true. We have failed in Europe for many reasons, but the main one is down to our approach as a club. Europe is a bonus for the plc, and until that changes we'll continue to fail.
@TheCelticExchange

At last a podcast is covering a very potential happening. A guy on the etims podcast has been saying this for quite a while now. He's a businessman and in his analagy, ' they're fattening up the pig to take it to market ' . The longer and longer this lack of expenditure goes on I'm and celtic fans should be genuinely worried now . He also says that when a billionaire says he's not doing something, ie , never sell the club means he's doing the opposite. The problem with the cash is FFP. New FFP rules dictate we can only spend 70% of revenue on player acquisition, player wages and agent fees. A point of note - the manager's salary is pegged under 'staff costs' so not of FFP concern and that is why we can pay Rodgers £60-70k a week. But the cash is useless for buying players. We must remain within FFP and the board plan so stringently for 5 years time and 70% of revenue being GUARANTEED to cover player costs and wages that they are hampering instead of supporting the team.

Thank you Tino once again for a very thought provoking discussion on Celtic fc. David is a very knowledgeable on the topic, a wealth of info and most importantly a Celtic man. The investment in attracting quality players and maintaining a standard that can compete in Europe must be the clubs focus into the future with such a weak domestic league. A strong Rangers, Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen, Dundee and Dundee Utd no doubt is preferable like the 60s and early 70s. Iron sharpens iron!

I do agree that the reason Celtic are not preforming that well in Europe is because of the Scottish premiership not being competitive enough. I absolutely do not like Rangers at all and I love Celtic so much, but I do think that the key to Celtic actually being better in Europe is to have a more competitive league. Take the Serie A for example since I am a Como and Italian football fan, Italian clubs only started to do well in Europe in recent years because the level of competition became higher. It’s not just Juventus collecting league titles for fun you have Milan, Inter, Napoli, Roma and now even Atalanta giving you a hard time. All the best to Celtic 💚

The 2angers performance levels in Europe over the past 5 years or so has eclipsed our own and that’s despite them being a poor second in an average league. We’ve ran out of excuses I’m afraid when a Club like theirs is being run in the manner it has has then managed to reach a major European Final losing it in a penalty shootout. We’ve got absolutely nowhere near that level in 10 years in Europe. It has got far more to do with the tactical approach at Celtic than the financial approach because the fact of the matter is we’ve been purchasing far better quality level players and had far more financial backing than them in the same period of time. They have also came from a start point of zero back in 2012. Celtic reached the last 16 of the Champions League by securing a record total of points in our respective Group at this time. Sorry guys but whilst we have been run financially well since that event transpired our appointments at Managerial level have not helped with our aspirations in Europe. The ironic thing is Neil Lennon despite his own personal issues off the field ( a back drop of threats,assaults and severe abuse) has taken Celtic further than those who followed him. He was a rookie Manager on top. Deila,Rodgers and Postecoglou are and were all one trick ponies in a tactical sense setting up with the same system week in week out,home and away Domestically and in Europe. Thus making the opposing Mangers teams selection so much easier in the process. Unless Brendan Rodgers changes his own approach to the European challenge then I’m sorry but I don’t see how we can hope to improve on our ever worsening record in the Champions League. You cannot hope to turn up with the same tactics away to Real Madrid than you do away to Motherwell or St.Mirren. That’s naivety in the extreme. Two Managers in Strachan and Lennon set up their team depending on the oppositions supposed weakness and our supposed strength. The results don’t lie in this regard. On the player trading model that David obviously thinks is a positive in terms of Finances (which it has been on the evidence ) this trading policy has also resulted in several negatives : Since it kicked in in the Summer of 2013 our performances in Europe over the past decade have declined noticeably since the previous decade in Europe. The Youth Development side that has produced the likes of McGeady ,Tierney ,Forrest and McGregor is now in such a state we are seeing quality young players leaving in their droves seeking first team chances elsewhere as the pathway to our own first team has a qeue of imported potential players in front of them who the Club have actively scouted with a view to developing them for the purpose of resale and profit. At what point is a balance going to reached where we don’t simply go out and scout a 20 something but rather blood our own at a younger age and persevere with them with a view to keeping them for the long term benefit of the side rather than the short term gains of the Investors? Dembele,Doak,Okoflex,Vata and now Kelly all looking elsewhere for their long term futures rather than the Hoops of Celtic. I personally believe that money has made our Club blind and that the vision that the likes of McCann had in 94’ is now long gone. Unsurprisingly I say as the man himself left Celtic after 5 years with a massive profit leaving Supporters with little or no control of the direction Celtic has since taken. I asked the question over 10 years ago that if Fergus had lifted half the profit he did from Celtic (still a massive gain btw) and left the wider fanbase more control in terms of shares would be be in the situation we are in at present? Since the arrival of Peter Lawwell at the Club we have seen a a concerted move to make Celtic a Debt Free money making venture with massive levels of Capital sat in the Bank. This despite a Global Recessionnin 2008 , a Global Pandemic in 2019 which seen football famously live out the quote by Mr Stein. Celtic have continued to make massive profit and operate without a Serviceable Debt which most Clubs operate within as it happens. It seem to me the Boards priority is to placate the Investors interest first and foremost and to do as little as possible to placate the average Supporter who wants to see Celtic go into Europe swinging and punching above our own weight. The further we get into this the wider the gap becomes between Board aspirations and Supporters aspirations. On the Kings of the Castle quote by David well we’ve been (through no fault of our own) a successful horse in a one horse race over the past 12 years or as Kevin Bridges put it Showjumping/ Dressage . Meanwhile in Europe the pock eyed pit pony that was Sevco Scotland shows us up in Europe. I think that the 50+1 Fan Control Model in Germany would suit our Club down to a T . The Support should unite and propose to Desmond that he should be the one who sets this up if possible possibly even underwriting it so it remains in safe hands should it all go Pete Tong. This way I believe we would safeguard the Club whilst simultaneously bringing the Support and Board Aspirations closer together in terms of Europe the actual bench mark for Celtic.

we objectively arent good at player trading, were not even in the top 100 clubs in Europe for profit on player trading, and that doesnt include all the top clubs who dont try to make a profit because they have massive income from other avenues the reason we have a stockpile of cash is that the fans donate about 50m every season, we get champions league money while paying conference level wages, and we about break even on player trading so nothing is spent net, its basically a fan charity collection agency our player trading sees us with a squad that is 80% garbage and were about to lose a player who carried us last season, when we were clear 2nd favourites at one stage to a rival with no money the only thing theyre good at is pissing on us and telling us its raining, theyre hopeless at anything related to football
@TheCelticExchange
@TheCelticExchange 5 ай бұрын
Some decent points but don't think its accurate to say we aren't good at player trading. O'Riley cost us £1.5M and will likely go for around £25M. You can also look at recent examples like Jota, Abada, Dembele, Ajer, Edouard, Frimpong, Van Dijk, Forster and others for where we're made massive profit on outlay. The challenge is for us to then see that reflected in how we re-invest in the first team squad, and that's the bit I don't think we're getting right.,

@@TheCelticExchange We have a handful of excellent buys, but when you look at the overall picture, their sales are drowned out by the great mass of trash, the mountains of 1-3m failures add up, the numbers dont lie, our overall profit on player trading over many years is not impressive, clubs who are good at it have 100s of millions profit, we generally spend what we bring in for a net break even, and 9 times out of 10 we weaken the squad in the process, the Dom McKay/Ange window being the rare exception.

Lets be honest the guy mentions trophies we have won since Fergus McCann days BUT he doesnt mention the facts that their were no competition at all THIS as Rangers had no part to play being a big part of them years were not there playing as they were within the lowest of low league in Scotland THIS until they worked their way back up into Spl . Although they did not then have moneys to compete ..he doesnt mention we have had and still have the greediest boards have had way back ..and still have today the tightest board in the history of football which is facts Celtic fc should be competing in Europe not ending bottom of the pile each time ..and not losing by 6/0 as they did v Athletico Madrid or any other side in which was an embarassment for Celtic fc and the fans and Scotland And even Rangers in their past yrs have done much better in Europe than we have is also facts . Seems this board do not care about Europe and thats where Celtic's fans 99% of them want to see the team do best within not just this winning the easy title yr after yr Spl although its important to win for to get into the big European league ( The Champs league ) its important for riches received for getting there aye , and its a good job we didnt need to qualify this year as we would have failed i reckon again because simply put the team today as i type lack quality and with quality you normally spend much more millions in which Celtic fc today have in abundance ( Put it this way the guy talks around £70m sure but he doesnt mention that Celtic fc have at least £160 m within .. And facts are their tightness leaves no bounds . especially them Desmond guys no time for them at all parasites i call them people . If Rangers had the riches Celtic have now that we have had last 10 yrs then they would have won 10 in a row possibly as would have secured the services GUARANTEED of better quality players with some 10m / 12m signings in there . Celtic fc club keep bringing in cheap signings and later yr after yr or so down line they try to sell them all off and struggle if they brought in a couple of £10m signings for instance , then would be a better calibre of players needed to aid them to reach bit higher in Europe and get through groups for a change , when was the last time we got through groups around near 20 yrs ago ..then thats a disgrace and we like to call ourselves s Celtic fc as a big club ..if a big club then would up the ante and > A line from Dom Mackay we want to make Celtic a team to be feared in Europe again , a team others shall know they shall be in for a tough time ..I say here we lost a guy with his vision for the team and club as a whole as his vision in time to get team better each yr .. And as i type its all good winning Spl titles and making Europe but when we get there we do nothing Whilst Celtic fc club have riches now then why not get in some decent quality signings instead of them 2m / 5m duds in year after year in year NOW 2024/5 ? Way over time to up the anti Celtic fc or stay cocooned bottom of the pile and out of Europe before Christmas And the same has occured with other chances to make progress in the Europa in the past many yrs out quickly before its really began in earnest this past 20 yrs Europe has been diabolical within Europe for Celtic fc sadly AND only because of a tight fisted board why cant they see the team lack quality for Europe as everyone else can . Its way time they got in some decent signings and paid out for them , as its guys like Jota Celtic miss BIGTIME and he was quality so who in the Celtic scouting ranks spotted Jota ? and players in the past like Mjallby , Elliot , Sutton , Larsson , Thompson , Petrov As them are the type scouts Celtic needed yrs gone past > And in need big time today .

We've won just as much since they've been back. It wasn't Celtics fault they were liquidated,we could only play who we had in front of us. That was their loss not ours. We could say the same about their winning streak in the 90s ,spending money they didn't have, to buy better players than Celtic, so they could dominate Scottish football.
