I’ve been an au Pair three times now, the first two families (Italian) didn’t pay for my flights. But my current family (French) offered to pay for half my airfare including my return flights. I think this can vary depending on what country you are going to and the nationality of your family. For example in Italy, au pairs get paid less around €65 per week, then in France I believe they pay more like €300-€400 a month. And the USA pays quite a bit, around $200 per week. All this to say that your destination might effect how much they are willing to pay for. P.S One of my past Italian families just contacted me to say they want me to come back, and they’d pay for my airfare instead of giving me pocket money. I do not think this would average out to be a good deal so I wouldn’t accept this. But I thought I’d mention it.

alison dehart this is interesting. I’m au pairing for the first time ever and the host family is in Italy. They paid for my flight from Denmark to Italy and pay me 100 euros a week. But I do think that it does depend on the country and what the host family could potentially offer. Also it seems hard to survive if a family pays for your flight and nothing else 😧

Did you find your French family through an agency?

I was actually lucky to match with a family who took on the responsibility of paying for my flight and visa costs for Germany, which is REALLY unusual for European families I think.

A family I have been talking with has offered to pay a small fraction of the flight, but it won’t make very much of a difference. Should I/how do I approach the subject?

I want to become an au pair this summer after I finish school and I’m looking to start in mid July/August as I’ve exams to complete.. I’m just wondering when would be a good time to start applying as I don’t want to be too early or too late. Also I am only 17 yrs old so I’m wondering will this affect my chances of getting chosen by a family?

After studying the A1 German language in private school, paying for the test and paying for the visa, I am literally broke so can I ask them to pay my flight, knowing that in Tunisia it's really hard to book bcz we don't have PayPal or master card , we have a one year contract and the flight is not expensive it's about 200 euro. Would it be awkward to ask 🤔

Ask them! The worst thing they can say is no, right? Communication is always the key!
