Sorry, but the Aero Club de France, the Aero Club of America, the Federation Aeronautique Internatioinale, Octave Chanute, Ferdinand Ferber, and the French Government all certified the Wrights as having flown in 1903. The December 1905 and January 1906 issues of L'Aerophile documented the Wrights' successful flights at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina and Dayton, Ohio. In point of fact, it was L'Aerophile's reportage of the Wrights that motivated Santos Dumont to cease experimentation with lighter-than-air aircraft and instead concentrate on heavier-than-air aircraft. Why do you accuse the French of lying? Why do you hate France?

A catapult launched airplane CAN take off under its own power, it just requires a longer airfield. The Wright Flyer could fly on its own with or without a catapult launch, they used a catapult because it was more convenient and didn't require as much space to take off, the exact reason why carrier based planes use them.

The Wright Brothers plane had an engine and two propellers even in 1903. There are pictures of them in the air flying and witnesses who measured their 46th flight to be 20 3/4 miles. By 1905 the Wright Brothers were already flying 40km in distance and were rockin' a 35 horsepower engine. Any Brasilian claim is silly and full of shit. Santos didn't even fly his plane until 1906. lucas camargo Born 20 July 1873 in state of Minas Gerais, Alberto Santos Dumont moved to Paris in 1891 but never forgot his birthplace. He soon began experimenting with flying, and designed his first balloon, the Brasil, in 1898. He later built and flew 11 dirigibles, including the prize-winning Number 6. He flew his first airplane, the 14-bis, on October 1906, the first aircraft to take off and land without any external assistance(*). His many other contributions to aviation included his 1907 Demoiselle, the precursor to modern light airplanes. He returned definitely to Brazil in 1931 and died in 1932.

@iChiphead
@iChiphead 7 жыл бұрын
The Wright Flyer made more thrust than 14-bis. Santos=Dumont had an engine that produced more horsepower, but it was mated to a very inefficient propeller. The result is that the Wright Flyers, particularly the Wright Flyer 3, had more thrust. Here's the math: 19% or .19 * 50 Horsepower = 9.5 (14-bis granting the engine upgrade) 76% or .76 * 12.5 horsepower = 9.5 (Wright Flyer I circa 1903) ..And just as Santos=Dumont did not find his original engine sufficient, the Wrights were upgrading to 18 horsepower in 1904. .76 * 18 horsepower = 13.68 (substantially more thrust than 14-bis) These are estimates, of course, but they are certain enough to dispel the notion that 14-bis had more power. It didn't, but then you should have figured that because 14-bis never climbed above 6 meters. Perhaps Santos should have tried a catapult, too.

And Santos=Dumont's 14 bis could only go in a straight line hop so NOT AIRPLANE. It was until his Demoiselle that he had a CONTROLLABLE airplane. BTW, the Wright Bros initial airplanes did not use catapults. Also, some versions of the Demoiselle even had Wright engines.

@vaijogarcoco ilha The explanation of 3 axes in Euclidian space is described at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frenet%E2%80%93Serret_formulas In differential geometry, the Frenet-Serret formulas describe the kinematic properties of a particle moving along a continuous, differentiable curve in three-dimensional Euclidean space ℝ3, or the geometric properties of the curve itself irrespective of any motion. More specifically, the formulas describe the derivatives of the so-called tangent, normal, and binormal unit vectors in terms of each other. The formulas are named after the two French mathematicians who independently discovered them: Jean Frédéric Frenet, in his thesis of 1847, and Joseph Alfred Serret in 1851. Vector notation and linear algebra currently used to write these formulas were not yet in use at the time of their discovery. The connection to 3 axes control is not clear. The Wrights do not seem to be aware of the 1850 work by Frenet & Serret. I don't think that someone who was aware of the paper and early aviation would see a direct connection to 3 axes control. Do you understand what you are claiming or are you just repeating something you read. I think that Cayley may have mentioned 3 axes but he was using the wrong analogy and had no concept of a bank and turn. Turns were identical to the way a boat turns through the use of the rudder. A model of the 14 bis (without ailerons) shows that flat U turns are possible under windless conditions. This level of control as demonstrated in 1908 was hailed by everyone as a major breakthrough but grasping the concept was much more difficult that the Wrights had imagined. Wilbur had to provide an explanation before anyone figured out how they could use wing warping and ailerons and pilot input to increase maneuverability and cope with wind shifts. The patent satisfies all of the requirements for a significant invention. It may lack clarity but later writers on the topic provided a much better explanation. The Wright's may have thought that you had to experience it as a pilot.

There was more than one specialist in the video. One was a "Yankee" and one was born and raised in Brazil. What were the details about his flight that you feel were ignored? One overlooked detail is the fact that the undercarriage was damaged and could not take off again without repair. I think that landing without damage was one of the requirements for winning the prize. Could this be the reason that the FAI recognizes another pilot as the first to comply with the FAI requirements? The International Aviation Federation, which recognizes Santos Dumond as inventor of the airplane, established in the 1906 contest "controlled flight more than 100 meters away, taking off and landing exclusively by own means". The final flight of 14-bis obeyed these criteria, was filmed and documented, flew for 300 meters away, at 6 meters high. The Wright "flight" did not use its own means but a capatulta (this structure on the right side of the image, observe a counterweight falling at the beginning of the takeoff path). In addition, it has never exceeded the minimum mark of 100 meters required by the FIA, and there is no evidence that it actually occurred except the testimony of the neighbor and the Wright employee, both parties concerned. Current images do not count since the engine may have been changed. Do you have any footage from that time? Not? A photo at least? Not! 14

The final flight of 14-bis obeyed these criteria, was filmed and documented, flew for 300 meters away, at 6 meters high. What is the source of your quote? We are seeking an original copy of the contest rules. Did you find one. Does it really say "controlled flight". As the youtube video says, the analogy was a boat with a rudder. The goal was stability and preventing the boat from capsizing. Dumont had less than 5 min. of rigid wing flight experience. Was he more a passenger than a pilot? In one photo, the ailerons are flapping and the rudder is locked in a full right position. Santos-Dumont was the first to comply with the FAI rules. He had to comply with most of the contest rules in order to win the prize. He taxied about 200 ft. to achieve take off speed. He did not have enough control or experience to handle side winds. When there was a wind gust, he usually landed. A practical airplane cannot wait for perfect windless conditions. The contest winning flight was at dusk when there was insufficient light for the motion picture cameras that were used. He may have flown almost 300 meters but this was the proof that he flew at least 100 m. samuel gino father of aviation? Yeah right "October 1905 Wilbur Wright did 59 minutes of flight in the Flyer III. An hour in the air is a long, long time. In 1905 it was fantastic. He'd go overhead and the locals would say: "Ah, that's just the Wright Brothers. They think they can fly." en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/... If you can fly for a solid hour you have all the major problems of airplanes solved. Who else was even close to doing that in 1905? This is not a "North American narrative" told by North Americans. This is what happened. The Wrights built the first practical airplanes that flew and flew and flew. In 1905, not 1906. They did that by solving all the major problems. Everybody else basically copied them. The Flyer III launched from a monorail track to reduce friction, but it did NOT use a catapult. It was fully self launched."

mr.spencer, the wright brothers declared in their diary book That the ability to run and takeoff was only developed by them in 1910, in conformity ANATOLE DE FRANCE declarations 1909. based in jay spencer's criteria to disqualify Dumont 's event, wright brothers Did not fill all requirements to first airplane untill 1910. the flyers Could not be considered an airplane untill 1910. @stevebett4947
@stevebett4947 3 жыл бұрын
What did Mr. Spencer declare? The Wright's were aware of wheeled take off since it was the common on contraptions that were supposed to fly. Most of the early bicycle wheel landing gears collapsed on landing and required extensive repair. The 14-bis had a number of these mishaps. Bicycle wheels would probably not work in the sands of Kitty Hawk or in the muddy pasture at Huffman Prairie . Wilbur came up with clever minimalist solution: standard 2x4 wooden planks and a wheeled trolley that was jettisoned or left behind on on take-off. As there was usually ample wind at Kitty Hawk , there was no need for a catapult. You sometimes had to wait a few days for a good wind. Dec. 17, 2003 only had about 4 mph of wind. On Dec. 14, 1903, the Wrights did answer one of their questions: Would a hill compensate for the lack of a strong headwind? It didn't. The same wind conditions occurred on Dec. 17, 2003 with the same results. The Wright Flyer would not fly without the assistance of a strong headwind, a small motor of over 8 hp., and .... Ld Barros was right. Wheels were added in 1910 because the Army required them as a condition of sale. Once added, the Wright Flyer 2, Model A? with over 28 hp had no trouble building up enough speed on a taxi to take off.

@vaijogarcoco ilha SB: Here is what Frennet's invented: In differential geometry, the Frenet-Serret formulas describe the kinematic properties of a particle moving along a continuous, differentiable curve in three-dimensional Euclidean space R3, or the geometric properties of the curve itself irrespective of any motion. More specifically, the formulas describe the derivatives of the so-called tangent, normal, and binormal unit vectors in terms of each other. The formulas are named after the two French mathematicians who independently discovered them: Jean Frédéric Frenet, in his thesis of 1847, and Joseph Alfred Serret, in 1851. Do you see a connection between this and the Wright application. Do you know of any lawyer who tried to use the Frenet-Serret formulas to challenge the Wright's patent?

What if you use the dictionary definition and add the Wrights addendum that a practical airplane requires 3 axis control and a hop of more than 600 ft. (200 yds or more than the length of 2 football fields)? To win the Archdeacon prize, the 14 bis was required to fly 100 m. Does this mean that a flight of 220 m. would be accepted as incontestable? Probably not but I will entertain arguments to the contrary. If beyond doubt or incontestable is connected to the way the rules for the competition were drafted, everything else is open to doubt and questions. The issue is that you claim that the Wright Flyer was not an airplane, and the 14-bis was. But if you compare the relative merits, you are being ridiculous. In 1905, the Wright Flyer III flew a distance of 24 miles in 39 minutes with numerous turns. The altitude was between 50-100 feet. That was a phenomenal achievement. True flight. In 1906, 14-bis best flight was for a distance of 220 meters and a height of 6. 14-bis could not perform a controlled turn. Honestly, which flight do you think really deserved the credit? Which flight came first? ..Don't say catapult--the Wrights preferred to use a catapult, but it wasn't a strict necessity. FAI records prove that the Wright Flyer could fly without a catapult.

Tehn00bA Born 20 July 1873 in state of Minas Gerais, Alberto Santos Dumont moved to Paris in 1891 but never forgot his birthplace. He returned definitely to Brazil in 1931 and died 1932. I have to agree with our Brazilian brothers, Santos Dummond was the man! If Dummond didn't do it because his plane lacked an axis than the Wright brothers failed as well lacking the ability to take off on its own. And many planes, even during WW1 didn't have yaw. Are you saying they were not airplanes?? A bit of a short minded view, in my opinion. And asking an American Expert to talk about this is really not the best way to get an unbiased opinion, wouldn't you say? If he was Brazilian, would you agree with his opinion?? But nice video anyway, there ins't and I don't there will ever be one single truth. I can agree than both the Wright bros. and Dummond were pillars of our modern aviation.

Many Brazilians in this comment section said they should have had a foreign expert. I am neither, but I am from North Carolina, the home state of the Wright brothers and "first in flight". First and foremost, The Wright brothers did not use a catapult to launch their planes between 1901 and 1903, the Wright flyer had to be pulled by both wings off of a sand dune. The Catapult was used in 1904 when testing their 'second' powered aeroplane. The Wright brother's 1903 flight lasted roughly 57 seconds (depending on who you ask, 59 seconds), which is a whopping 20-30 second difference between Dumonts. The Wright brothers flight was extremely recorded, some of their flights were even examined by the King of Italy, Victor Emmanuel III, because he had an interest in aviation.

I'm Brazilian and I'm among the few Brazilians that recognize the precedency of the Wright Brothers as the first aviators. This theme is kind of taboo in Brazil. People get pissed off if somebody says that Santos Dumont did not invented the airplane, because he is a national hero in Brazil. Every town has a street named after him and they are very proud of his work as aviator. What I think is that something as complex as the airplane does not have a single inventor. This is a patriarchal view of things. Things that do need a "father". In the other hand, we also have to credit the women of the begining of the last century who did the mathematical calculations and also some of them who really flew, like Raymonde Laroche and Gladys Roy and so on. Anyway, reading some books and watching some videos I concluded that the Wright Brothers were the first aviators, but I also think that Santos Dumont was really important for the development of the blimp and the airplane itself with the Demoiselle. And some people consider Otto Lilienthal the first aviator.

What I should add is that although I recognize the Wrights as the inventors who made the first flight, the contributions for the development of the aeronautical science made by Santos-Dumont were greater than the brothers, because Santos-Dumont never did any patent for his work. All his work was open source. Everybody could copy his ideas anytime. And this was the case sometimes. The Wright brothers, on contrary, were very concerned with patents and copyright. In some moments they even stopped to develop the airplane to deal with lawsuits. Every flight of Santos-Dumont were public and the brothers worked in secrecy. This is why we have this controversy of the first aviator even today in 2024.

@@silviacoxxxnando2288 the "first flight", and the "first aviation record" are two different things. FAI didn't exist in 1903, so they wouldn't have issued an official record for something that took place then, but they do recognize the Wright Brothers for making the first powered, manned, and controlled heavier-than-air flight. You're arguing that Santos-Dumont flew first because he received the first aviation record, but many people see that a little differently.

Born 20 July 1873 in state of Minas Gerais, Alberto Santos Dumont moved to Paris in 1891 but never forgot his birthplace. He returned definitely to Brazil in 1931.

So basically Santos Dumont was (at least) the first one to have the balls to try flying a machine heavier than air in front of many witnesses in the center of Paris and to try to win a money prize they offered there INSTEAD of only doing it in secret in the middle of nowhere (as Wright Brothers did, with the unmistakeable mindset of "lets patent this shit and make millions of it"). Santos Dumont not only won the prizes for baloon and heavier than air flights, but even made his designs not patented. So Kitty Hawk flight almost certainly happened, but what does this really mean for Wilbur and Orville? Didn't they knew of the prize in Paris? Couldn't they go there before 1906, before Dumont, to amaze the crowd with their sleek and advanced Flyer machine? Were they surprised when learned of Dumont's achievement with an aircraft less advanced than theirs? Does it matter if I can run 100 meters faster than Usain Bolt, but only do this in my backyard in North Carolina, refraining from doing it at the Olympics?

@fep_ptcp883 wrote: " Santos Dumont was the first one to have the balls to try flying a machine heavier than air" That appears to be an overstatement. There were dozens of flight pioneers who endured crashes (sometimes multiple crashes) who were just as brave. Wilbur and his brother applied for a patent on a better method for controlling flight before they or anyone else had achieved more than a short hop. They were interested in cashing in and were reluctant to allow anyone to invest in their crazy endeavor. This meant that they had to conduct a series of experiments on the cheap. The point was to prove their concept of controlled flight. They identified potential buyers and were not at all concerned with the general public. Anyone who wanted proof had to pay for it. Their father told them not to expect any money from him and encouraged them to find a way to pay as you go. They had a contract with a French delegation in 1904 but the French government reneged. They did not get another contract until 1906 and this is what made it possible to visit Europe in 1906 and send a Wright Flyer 2 Model A to France in 1907. This prototype was heavier and sturdier than their 1904 design, had 2 seats, and was powered by a new engine producing 32 hp. Wikipedia has a page on each of Wright's engines along with a page on the Antoinette 50 hp engine that Santos-Dumont and others used. For some reason, the Wrights were rarely interested in contests. They supported those who bought a Model A and entered a contest. The Wrights were worried that someone would discover their secret and build a practical airplane before they did. Even those with full knowledge of the design and how wing warping worked did not discover the secret. Wilbur had to explain it to Bleriot in 1908 probably believing that he would be as slow as they were in adding it to his monoplane. It would have take the Wrights up to 2 years to build a new prototype. Louis Blériot did it in 4 months. Before the channel crossing, the European manufacturers had 150 orders for the Flyer. After Bleriot's success, the orders shrank to around 50. This was a significant loss of money. Louis Blériot (/ˈblɛrioʊ/ BLERR-ee-oh, (for details check Wikipedia. The article is available in English, French, and Portuguese) The main purpose for the trip was to prepare for the European production of the soon to be revealed Wright Flyer 2 Model A. The negotiated with European engine builders who would build replicas of the 1906 Wright Vertical 4 (28hp) engine under license. Wilbur received 7 engines from the French engine builder in 1908. Reports in newspapers and magazines may not be reliable. This is why the Wright's wanted to get the opinion of Ferdinand Ferber who had recently switched from a doubter to a disciple of the Wrights in 1905. Ferber had doubts because he tested the aircraft that Archdeacon had imported to France. Capt.Ferber could not duplicate their record breaking performances. -- @zikalokof1challenge414 was supposed to present everything: PUBLICLY, IN FRONT OF EXPERTS, A LARGE AUDIENCE, PHOTOGRAPHING, RUNNING, TAKEOFF, STAYING IN THE AIR WITH ENGINE POWER AND LANDING. SEND A LINK TO A NEWSPAPER OR MAGAZINE DATED BETWEEN 1903-1905 WITH A REPORT OF THE FLIGHT AND PHOTOS OF THIS FLIGHT. PLEASE! There are photos but it would be hard to authenticate the date for all of them. The dates and the names of the newspapers which featured articles on the 1903 flight can be found by reading the responses of others. Specifically SPONG I don't recall seeing a photograph of the large audience but there are multiple accounts of the public performances. The best account is by Capt. Ferber who interviewed 12 prominent citizens who were present. Ferber, a former critic, said he now believed the Wright stories He could not convince Archdeacon and other members of the French Aero-Club before 1908. They remained unconvinced until they saw how well the Wright Flyer 2 Model A performed at Le Mans in 1908. The famous photo of the 1903 flight by Orville was not released until 1908. . There are at least two videos of the exact replica taking off in a 15 mph breeze. They were published here among 1000 other comments. I would like for you to practice doing real research rather than parroting something you heard from another Santos-Dumont fan. If you want me to do the research for you, you have to promise to explain why you won't accept it as good evidence. It is not as impressive as Alan's video of his look-alike replica with modern enhancements. AC's replica was on a sunny day and with an engine with half the power of the 50 hp Antoinette. This alone suggests that this performance could not be an indication of the 1906 flight of the original 14 bis. Names of invited to discuss: to be added -

How does the size of the audience make the feat riskier or the pilot more heroic? I am not sure that the Wright Brothers could have come to France and compete with the best. They didn't have the funds to do it until 1906. In 1907, they were busy setting up European businesses to build engines and air-frames. They thought there was no particular rush since they thought they were 5 years ahead of anyone else. They received as much as $50,000 by giving the European financiers their European Patents. The speed was not sufficient to get much information on how it could be controlled when the speed was over 20 mph. As an experiment, the attachment to a blimp was probably a failure. However, I think it was turned into an excellent story and was a PR success.

@cardinalRG
@cardinalRG 29 күн бұрын
There are no 14-bis replicas, only what are known as "look-alikes" in the aviation community. They are aircraft largely like the originals, but also featuring upgrades and other modifications. For example, the most faithful 14-bis look-alike, by Calassa, has a re-designed airfoil (the original design is lost to history), a lightweight, high-efficiency Rotax engine, and a modern propeller whose design connects back to the pioneering work of the Wrights. As such, the look-alike does not have the same performance range as the original 14-bis, so it does not prove or disprove the claims for the original. We know by other evidence that the original 14-bis flew. Likewise, an attempt to test the claims for the 1903 right Flyer would have to use a genuine replica, and the attempt would have to take place in comparable physical conditions. So far as I know, this hasn't ever been done. Wright critics often cite the 2003 Centennial celebration attempt as legitimate, but it isn't, for reasons I'll be happy to explain, if you'd like. The bottom line is that the claims for the 1903 Flyer must be judged by other evidence, because there is no "replica" evidence available.

Oliver Wright and Wilber Wright were two brothers born into a family of farmers in Dayton, Ohio, in the late 19th century. Oliver, the older of the two, was always focused on the practical side of life. He was a hard worker, taking care of the family farm from a young age and later becoming a skilled mechanic and carpenter. Wilber, on the other hand, was more interested in the challenges and possibilities of the outside world. He was imaginative, creative, and always looking for something new. Despite their differences, the brothers were inseparable as children, spending countless hours exploring the countryside and dreaming up new inventions. As they grew older, they became aware of the world of aviation and the tremendous potential it held. They began seriously studying aeronautics, designing and building their own gliders and experimenting with new techniques. Oliver was mostly interested in the design and mechanics of the planes, while Wilber had a natural talent for flying and the prowess to make an on-the-spot decision. The two worked tirelessly, using their own resources to fund their projects and getting their data from news clippings and snippets from scientific Journals. In 1899, the Wright brothers contacted Octave Chanute, a renowned aviation expert, and shared their work in flight. They used the time to acquire information on the research carried out by other inventors such as Samuel P. Langley. The brothers obtained a better understanding of aeronautics through their interaction with Chanute allowing them to advance their theories. The brothers continued perfecting their inventions but had not thought of applying for a Patent on their invention. Eventually, other inventors after reviewing their documented and methodical approach to invention; referred to their designed flight techniques for their own prototypes. However, in 1903, the Wright brothers made history when they took to the sky in their powered aircraft, called the Wright Flyer I. They launched from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and flew for 12 seconds, covering 120 feet. This was the first time anyone had ever flown in a powered, controlled flight, and it revolutionized the aviation industry forever. Despite their impressive achievement, Oliver wanted to keep improving the plane's design, while Wilber saw commercial possibilities from which the aviation industry could profit. An intense rivalry began between them. Oliver was furious as Wilber went ahead and filed the patent, which excluded him from both recognition and financial gain. Wilber became increasingly successful in the aviation industry, starting a large aircraft manufacturing company that provided planes for the military during World War I. Oliver left behind a blue-collar life to become an inventor and made headlines for his discovery in nuclear energy, which resulted in the complete meltdown of a reactor costing 1821 lives. In 1948 Oliver died in a car accident. Wilber lived until 1958, leaving behind a legacy that had profoundly changed the world of aviation. The brother's dispute over patent continued up to their deaths, forever leading to debates over whether power and fame influenced an ethical principle essential to their achievements, which would stand as a landmark of brotherhood achievement.

The beginning of the twentieth century was marked by an unprecedented technological revolution. Among the new areas of scientific development was aeronautics. Several inventors were in a race against time to be responsible for creating the first heavier-than-air flying machine. The plane is the result of combining the work of these idealizers. But it can not be denied that the Brazilian Santos Dumont and the American brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright, are the pioneers of aviation that received more notoriety in this dispute. And to this day, they generate controversy over who was the first to succeed in creating a heavier-than-air flying machine. The race against time On October 23, 1906 in Paris, Santos Dumont made the first flight with the 14-bis documented by the Official Commission of the Aeroclube of France. In the presence of an audience of about 1,000 people, the aircraft traveled 60 meters in 7 seconds, 3 meters high and with a speed of 30 km / h. This achievement earned him the title of Father of Aviation and made him famous throughout the world. Santos Dumont Alberto Santos Dumont However, earlier on December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers had secretly carried out the first flight with Flyer I. In the presence of few witnesses, the plane traveled 37 meters in 12 seconds at a speed of 10.9 km / h had the take-off aided by a railing system. Other flights were also carried out which eventually damaged the aircraft, which could no longer be used. The inventors informed the press of their achievement, but they were not taken seriously, for until that moment no one knew them. The meeting only happened in 1908, when the brothers finally traveled to Paris in order to participate in an air party promoted by the Airclub of France. On this occasion, the work of Santos Dumont and the Wright Brothers could finally be compared. Wright Brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright While the 14-bis performed flights in circles as a balloon, Flyer III had a 3-axis system that allowed more controlled curves to be performed, performing maneuvers in the form of an eight. In addition, the Flyer was able to stay in full flight for hours. It was evident that the brothers' work had already come from many years. The Great Controversy According to the rules established by the French Air Club, which at that time was the most prestigious aeronautical institution in the world, only inventions of machines would be considered for the prize competitions: could take off autonomously were completely controlled by the pilot whose demonstrations were supervised by the institution's commission, which could only happen in France. Taking this into account, Santos Dumont was the author of the first flight with a flying machine heavier than air in an autonomous way and with the presence of the Evaluation Commission of the Aeroclube of France. The problem is that some historians of aeronautics question a lot about the fact that 14-bis is an effectively controlled machine, with its numerous levers and commands the aircraft worked much like a balloon. In the case of the Wright Brothers, the Flyer could be controlled more efficiently, but it was not able to fly alone. First, rails were used to propel the aircraft, then it was used a tower that launched a weight of 700 kilos able to propel the Flyer, working like a catapult. In this way, the two machines had questionable points and not completely within the rules established by the Airclub of France. In any case, its results were unquestionable and pioneering, contributing intensely to the advancement of aeronautics. Comparisons between Flyer and 14-bis The two machines had similar weights and sizes, about 200 pounds, 10 meters in length and 12 meters in wingspan. However, while the 14-bis was piloted standing with a harness system attached to the body, respecting the origin of Santos Dumont's balloonist, the Flyer was lying on his stomach being controlled by two levers. First Flyer Flight First flight of Flyer I in the city of Kill Devil Hills, United States Compared to aerodynamics, Flyer's glider structure gave it a better performance than the 14-bis hargrave cell concept that worked like a kite.But the main difference was in the very conduct of its creators. The Americans were convinced that the best thing to do was to keep their work a secret, out of the eyes of their competitors to prevent their ideas from being copied because they had a strong commercial interest in the sale of the Flyer. 14 bis First flight of the 14-bis in the field of Bagatelle, in Paris Already the Brazilian was an aviation enthusiast and spread all his deeds. He held public demonstrations, published his projects, and developed other creations such as airships and even a helicopter that never got tested. This attitude helped other inventors to evolve their own research and improve the work.

The specialist invited didn't mention about the catapult, I still believe in Santos Dumont, he took off using an engine and he flew around the Tower Eiffel in Paris and landed in front of journalists and the crowd and there's also footage of it.
