The world's first written mention of the drink and of the word "vodka" was in 1405 from Akta Grodzkie recorder of deeds, in the court documents from the Palatinate of Sandomierz in Poland.

@@levvy3006 Poland had elected Kings. Poland invented Vodka. Poland had the first 100% equal parliament, Poland was the most liberal nation-state in Europe between 1100-1699 with 45% Catholic and the rest mix of Protestant, Calvinism, Othrodox and Islam. Poland had an aristocracy that regularly disobeyed the establishment of Europe. Poland had the largest civil uprising in history (Warsaw Uprising against Waffen SS). Poland fought over 80 key battles in Europe, one of which prevented Muslims from taking over the whole of Europe all the way from Hungary to France (Grunwald). Romania/Balkan states were under Ottomans. Russia's royal family was from the British whilst the people are a mix of Asian and European bloodlines and, Mongol. Poland had the best chess players and mathematicians and Logicians. Bletchley park et al. Poland has a very modern society with extremely high education rates (>60% have 2 degrees). Poland is soon a G20 nation and has not a single terrorist nation. Poland along with HU, RO, CZ, SK and others in Viszegrad has resisted "asylum migration" and because of it, has not suffered a single terrorist incident. Don't be an abusive angry communist. I have no quarrel with the Russians, they are a great people but your rudeness and ignorance can be felt. I speak Russian, Polish and another 5 languages so I would consider myself a European Citizen. I am a proud proponent of the EU and further ties with EU-Sov. nations. Thank you for this really interesting film! I teach Polish at the University of Florida and I show this to my classes as part of the culture unit. One thing I'm surprised by is no one mentioning the fact that the word "wódka" is a diminutive form of "woda," which means "water." So really, vodka just means "cute-little-water." It's very similar to "whiskey" being the Celtic word for "water of life."

The reason why vodka is spelled with a w in Poland is because in the Polish alphabet there is no V. W makes the same sound at V. Its spelled with a V in English because of the sound the letter W makes in English. It would sound like (Watka)

The first written record of vodka in Poland dates from 1405 in the Sandomierz Court Registry. In Russia, the first written usage of the word vodka in an official document in its modern meaning is dated by the decree of Empress Catherine I of June 8, 1751 that regulated the ownership of vodka distilleries. Which shows that traditions of making Wódka in Poland proceed Russia by over 300 years. Russia only standarised it. but Poland, invented it.

I had Polish vodka,Belarusian vodka, Ukrainian vodkas etc along with the other leading brands and sorry, but all the western crap can't compare/compete with them. And even though that there's been sparks and rows between Poland and Russia for centuries somehow we can still sit together and drink vodka with Russians just like that. Weird, isn't it? :)

A buddy of mine went to Moscow for business back in 2001. Upon arrival to the hotel, he checked into his room then headed to the hotel bar about 5pm where the wait staff gave him free shots of Vodka. One beautiful waitress kept bringing him free double shots. He woke up in an unknown room in that hotel a day and half later!! Naked with all his cash and credit cards gone! Luckily his room was not tampered with, his work equipment, clothes and back up money were safe in his room. He didn't drink at all during the next 2 weeks stay.
