Rewatching with you seems to prove how much better Khabib is than Islam in grappling. As I've always noticed that Khabib would always make sure that he's resting when he's on his opponent. Khabib was always making his enemies carry him. Which is why you always see Khabib's opponents to look tired and worn out even in mid fights.

People think Islam fought a random FW. He fought the P4P #1 and this is how a fight between 2 best in the sport look like. One sided domination is rare and it is bound to be highly competitive. If anything, Islam really impressed me because it was his first defence, no Khabib in the corner, bad weight cut, his streak on the line yet he showed heart. Kudos to Alex too he really hung in with a Dagestani. Rn, Islam has snatched a 22 fight win streak and a 11 fight win streak in just 4 months. That’s beyond impressive

As a boxing fan, there is usually more bias in commentary & crowd (depending on lead promoter). It seems to affect judges as much as fans. Turning volume off and objectively watching each round will often lead to different scoring

I really love these break downs! They're so informative, and especially because of who you are as an MMA multiple weight champion AND a wrestler who's an Olympic gold medalist! So many people don't appreciate wrestling and grappling, they just want to see striking . Also I think if Khabib was in Islam's corner it would've made a big difference as far as the wrestling is concerned. Him coaching Islam through all the positions on the ground is really a big difference IMO. 1 of the things you pointed out that Islam didn't do was take out Volk's hands as support, which Khabib almost never missed himself. I hope Khabib shows up for Islam in the rematch.. but honestly with all the Hooker allegations and BS I wouldn't blame Islam if he didn't want to do the rematch now. He won this war of a fight and instead of respect all he gets is a bunch of BS. He said right away he'd give Volk the rematch, but after Volk and his team being sore losers and throwing out allegations with 0 proof and stuff.. Dude the fact is you are spot on with your whole analysis. UFC and Volk agreed, from the time of at least Abu Dhabi, when Islam knocked Charles Oliveira down with a strike and then immediately submitted him on the ground to become the UFC Undisputed Lightweight Champion of the World, that Volk would fight him with the p4p #1 ranking as Volk's stake in the fight - Khabib called for it from the very first moments and not a soul dissented. UFC endorsed the result in 4 separate Tweets after the event. The media and journalists who control the p4p lists are spineless. This was an understood deal between two men and endorsed by the organization organizing and promoting the fight, it's bullshit that Islam isn't #1 p4p after that fight. Volk knew what he was training for all camp. To say Volk won the fight is to say all 3 professionally trained judges don't know as much as you at your armchair behind the computer. It's absurd

He focused almost entirely on Islam in the breakdown, and chucked in a quick volk opinion here and there. It was weird, he was so focused on one fighters mistakes and not the other fighters success. He talked about Islam's knees, but not Volks hooks to the body, which had a huge effect on Islam's tank.

Volk came in an OUTPERFORMED EXPECTATIONS. We're all giving him his flowers for that. But when you zoom out and look at this fight objectively, not who the underdog is, or what we thought was gonna happen, or any of that. The judging. The card, the control time, take downs, who was imposing who's will, dmg taken, the science of the fight is still the end all be all. As great as Volk's performance was. He actually had advantages: 1. Volk had the crowd support, every punch or take down defense was celebrated by the crowd which induces bias. 2. Volk was the smaller, hence had an easier weight cut. 3. The pressure was on Islam to win, he put his belt on the line. And was considered the favorite. 4. Islam just only faced off against Charles very recently. And had a bad weight cut process. 5. Volk's held off Islam for 5 rounds, and somehow it seemed like a moral victory because of the under-dog status. This is a testament to Islam's greatness. 6. Home advantage meant Volk had better rest and support. Islam was the "enemy" on home territory, hence out of his comfort zone. 7. Volk's height actually makes it more difficult for Islam to wrestle. Volk's strategy was also just to stuff takedowns by just grabbing/pulling Islam's hands/gloves for dear life. 8. Khabib was not in Islam's corner. This is actually a big deal. It's like Volk not having his closest trainer around for the process. Islam is getting criticized now, because he is unfortunately not from a favorable race/nationality on the global stage.

The crowd makes a huge difference in how you perceive a fight. It's like when Conor fights, the crowd goes crazy almost every time he throws a punch so you feel like something amazing is happening. I remember in the first Diaz fight, every time he touched Diaz there was a huge roar from the crowd but watching again afterwards you realize how many times Nate tagged Conor but there was no reaction from the crowd. Same thing in this fight, even when Volk was on his back, being totally controlled, unable to get up or improve his position, just because he was talking shit the crowd was going crazy like he was doing something amazing, when in fact he was losing the round.

I just re-watched the fight. Islam actually won the first four rounds. Landed some big shots in the 5th too, just lost that last sequence. Islam was right in his tweet. Thought it was a lot closer when I watched it live. The crowd and the commentary and just the pure shock that Volk was doing so good...definitely swayed me. Also, it was definitely not the most competitive fight in UFC history. Closer fights have happened. Its up there though.

Round 2 and 3 are both very debatable depending how the fight is scored (we know from inconsistencies in judges, fights are not always scored how they should be). While you could say Islam clearly won 1, 2 & 4 and 3 was close, you could very easily argue Volk won 2, 3 and 5. Was a close fight. a successful takedown is not merely a changing of position, but the establishment of an attack from the use of the takedown. unified rules of mixed martial arts. Under these guidelines, scoring in each round is based on effective striking/grappling, effective aggressiveness, and - in the case of the UFC - Octagon control. When it comes to effective striking, essentially, judges are looking for damage. Like the standup game, effective grappling is also about inflicting harm and not about just wrestling a competitor to the mat and holding on for dear life. When it comes to aggressiveness, a fighter can’t rack up points simply by moving forward and getting picked apart by a man with better footwork and technique. A UFC fighter needs to make the most of that pressure. Chasing after an opponent with no effective result or impact should not render in the judges assessments, the unified rules state. The least important criterion - although viable nonetheless - is Octagon control. I really doubt you knew any of this, objectively by the criteria there's no way Islam won round 4. Volk out struck him 6-4 in significant strikes on the feet. Islam scores points for getting a takedown and back take. Islam did barely any damage with the few punches he threw no significant strikes no submission attempts and thats not up for the debate check the stats no significant strikes no submissions. Volk didn't land anything significant strikes either but he did land enough punches to open a cut on Makhachev's eye. Volk won on effective striking and aggression, Islam's points for effective grappling for getting the takedown and back take don't mean as much per the rules because he didn't use the position to cause damage and wasn't as aggressive as Volk. Octagon control doesn't come into play because Volk won on effective striking and aggression per the official criteria more important than Octagon control.

I had it 3-2 and thought one of the scores was off but after rewatching it.. I think it was 4-1 Islam. All the hits that i thought dropped Islam were slips or not clean strikes. I think Islam embarrases Volk with a proper weight cut in a rematch. Volk has thrived on his gas tank. He may actually be overrated. Dude used to walk around 200 pounds. Chad Mendes was kicking his ass but ran out of gas. Everyone else he's fought at Feather Weight can't handle his intensity yet he rarely knocks people out. I think Yair's hits hit way harder than anyone he's faced and i think Yair is going to smash him.

The problem with trying to take volks hand post out is that with a short legged opponent it’s hard to control the legs while reaching for his arms. It’s gonna be hard to control his short legs with your legs so you can transition to the upper body. As soon as you let go of his legs to reach for the post he’s gonna easily extract his legs and advance to a much better position.

Everyone who thinks volk Won needs to watch this!!! It was a very close fight no doubt. I love Volk and think there isn't anyone in his weight class who's going to beat him in a while his gas tank is insane he can fight 5 rounds none stop.

Henri it was also Volks defensive stand and power that didn't allow Islam to capitalize on those takedowns. He switched his stance so that Islam couldn't place his shoulder correctly. He was really missing that wrist control though. That's what made khadip so dominant on the ground the leg and wrist control. I think khadip is stronger than Islam though. VOLK was also talking about Islam not being strong. That weightcut made him a little weaker than we normally see him.

Great review you can tell Islam had a horrible weight cut he didn't look rehidrated! Look back at him against Charles his body looked a lot better. Plus the hight of Volk he was really struggling with. Hard fought for both man

Exactly i said the same thing about the “drop” in the 5th round. Islam didnt get dropped once this fight. He was clearly level changing and even got to the foot but just didnt finish the takedown bedause the punch landed and fatigue. Bit islam infact dropped volk to a knee

I'm a firm believe that Khabib in Islams corner makes the difference. Islam is so damn good, but Khabib has that fight IQ and fight assesment from the corner that Islam needs to use his full potential in his fights. If Khabib is in Islams corner I believe he is unstoppable.

The atmosphere in the arena had a big say in why people thought Volk won. Him talking while Islam had him on the ground, every strike he threw the crowd overreacted and of course the last min of the 5th round. Re watch it and you can make a case 4-1 Islam or 3-2 Islam. Sorry Volk did not win.

Having seen the breakdown it makes sense , I think when you see how the fight ended it seems very definet that volk won cause he was on top and if their was longer left in the round maybe that would've come to something, but as Islam was not knocked out or submitted they have to take all rounds before that point and he won those so fair play to him can't wait to see the rematch

Excellent breakdown, I came to the same conclusion after rewatching it. Such basic mistakes from Islam, the man was definitely affected by Khabib not being in the corner. Training with the same group of everyday is a blessing and a curse. The curse being, you'll never get an honest evaluation until you face stiff competition.
