As someone who listens to extreme noise and grindcore among other things, I’m very used to being criticized for my taste in music, I even expect it. I myself am kind of confused about why I would enjoy such a thing, it’s basically white noise but more abrasive. To me, that really shows the magic of music and how people can perceive the same piece vastly differently. I mean, look at music from different cultures, some of it is wholly removed from western music but still causes happiness for those that listen. I think this video does an excellent job touching on these case examples of those who did not find that enjoyment of the art, touching on the nuances of their perspectives.

Glad you enjoyed. I agree with this-I touch on a lot of this stuff about music from different cultures in my video on language and music if you're interested.

Music is the noise of culture, which basically means that when you take sounds and put them in an order warranted by a given culture, you get music. Most people like the sound of ex. (small) waterfalls, but they don't consider it to be music. Pleasant sounds ≠ music

very interesting! i love listening to music but since childhood i've believed that i'm naturally 'bad' at rhythm and/or making music. probably i was, because most people are unless they make an effort to learn... but this story i told myself from a young age stopped me from ever really trying to develop my musical skills. so, naturally when i read the title of the video this is what i thought about! but i guess a fear of failure is nothing new or specific to music. nicely written essay, i subscribed - i may not be a musician, but i like the arts and history (and history of the arts) and looks like a lot of your videos are on topics i'll find interesting :)

Oi fam, dis vid is like a deep dive into why certain mandem and gyaldem through history weren't vibin' with music, innit? First off, big up for the Salvador Dali chat. Man was proper mad about art over tunes. Said music was dead to him, but still was lowkey likin' Mozart on the DL. Mad contradictory, but that's Dali for ya, always on a mad one. Then you've got dem ancient Greek dons like Plato, chattin' bout how music can mess with your head, and not in a good way. My man was all 'bout banning certain beats in his ideal city cuz he thought they were too hedonistic. Man had points but was a bit of an overthinker, innit? And don't even get me started on Kant and Tolstoy. Kant was like, music is just a plaything for the senses, not even deep. Tolstoy, though, had love for the tunes but thought they did a madness to the soul, made you feel things you weren't supposed to. Man's love-hate relationship with music was next level. But yo, this vid ain't just about throwing shade at music. It's about understanding how these big brains felt music affected people and society, yeah? Some thought it was a distraction, others reckoned it was like magic. And you, my G, you're clearly in the music is magic camp. Respect for sharing these thoughts and sparking convo.Mad interesting stuff, bruv. Keep dropping these knowledge bombs and exploring these mad topics. Man's looking forward to what you've got next. And yeah, music is like magic to most of us, innit? It's got that power to hit you right in the feels, no matter what some old-time philosophers might say. Big up yourself for the vid, fam!
