I own a large boat. Sometimes currents and wind push your vessel around. I do not have the luxury of thrusters. So at times i rely on my crew to fender off. Yes its always the captains responsibility. But this time the crew could have been more alert. Blame can be spread around.

Its even worse. The helmsman, whomever it is at that point, was doing this. Deckhands tried to save what they could. These ships have a bow thruster and at least two props. Some even have an aft thruster. This was completely unnecessary. He could have made the bow thruster thrust to the dock, put all engines in lowest gear and on low revolution, and then use the leverage of the rolling over the bow to get the aft off the dock while straining the bow lines. Another idea is to use the bow thruster to thrust away from the dock and put strain on the bow line, this will leverage the aft away as well and would be the practice I would pick. There is the old way which is to port prop it with the bowline strained, then the aft swings away. Then starboard prop without bowline and keeping port prop at lower revolutions simultaneously.

Yacht that size would have bow thrusters. Thrust bow away from pier and rudders full starboard with slight throttle. Stern away from pier, you can now gradually turn to port.
@jdrissel
@jdrissel 11 ай бұрын
Either that captain is clueless or there's more wrong with this boat than just the bow thruster. I have seen boats without bow thrusters get away in similar conditions by tieing the bow back and using the mains to starboard (and lots of fenders) to pivot until they can back away from the dock, but it doesn't look like that is what they were trying to do here. I wonder if this boat was towed in and repaired just enough that it would run forward and had rudder control....
