It's kinda nuts watching someone encounter Hi Ren at this stage of things. You think he's impressive in Hi Ren? Oh, he is... but you've seen maybe 10% of what he can do. He defies genres at the same time he pays homage to them. He raps but he also sings and plays a variety of instruments all while he performs as if on stage. Oh, and he makes his own beats, beatboxes, produces his own music, and plans most of his music videos. And he blends those talents together into something far greater than the sum of its parts. His rap flows and lyricism blends into his singing and vice versa. I've seen him do Bob Marley, Ozzy, Zack de la Rocha, David Bowie, and James Brown and do them each justice while adding his own element to it. Welcome to the rabbit hole, it's one hell of a ride! Oh, and along the way you'll get to see the people he hangs out with who are amazingly talented in their own right. Chinchilla, Sam Tompkins, The Big Push, Eden Nash, and the list keeps going on. I'm 54 and it feels like I've rediscovered music again.

Welcome to the Renaissance! Ren is my favourite artist of all time. I say artist because he is a multifaceted diamond! From singing (all styles) to rapping (bars/flows/schemes for days), Bardcore (story telling) beatbox, makes his own beats, scatting and a multi instrumentalist (guitars, bass, drums, melodica and more). On top of that he is the most beautiful human being inside and out who has been through and continues to go through absolute hell. He’s 33 from Anglesey, Wales originally but spent most his life in Brighton, England. He’s been living in Calgary, Canada all year receiving intense medical treatment for his brain damage and mast cell activation disorder amongst other things. He started off making beats at 12 and selling CDs then moved on to busking. He was part of a band called Trick The Fox and was signed to Sony but they didn’t renew the contract after his health deteriorated. He then started The Big Push. They went on hiatus the end of last year after 5 years partly due to his move to Canada and also because the other members are also soloists and were moving around too. I have a list of songs to check out of all styles. Obviously this is no where near everything but gives you places to start. 🖤 Ren song list Here’s a list to get you going (I know you’ve seen a few) 🖤 Rap type The hunger Illest of our time Power Losing it Genesis (also the acoustic one) Sick boi Animal flow (also the acoustic) What you want (beastie boys homage) Murderer Masochist Bardcore The tale of Jenny and screech (full) Hi Ren MoneyGame part 1 MoneyGame part 2 Singing ones Chalk outlines (live) How to be me (live) Humble Ocean Fire Funny 1990s (watch the video one) Love music Love music part 2 Love music part 3 Love music part 4 Down on the beat Dear God Depression Insomnia Ren&Sam Tompkins- what went wrong 1&2 Loads of busking ones with his band The Big Push, ones with Sam Tompkins and Chinchilla. Subbed to see more Ren; your reaction was so much like mine - awe! If you find something you don't like, try again because the well is deep, and there's something for everyone. Ren's latest offerings are from a soon to be released hip hop album, but that is not his "home", so to speak. His next album will be something completely different. His rap skills have changed my attitude about rap completely, though, because his lyrics are so masterful and his style is just different. His Demos album hold some of my favorite tunes and give a peek into his inner world during his darkest times.

Ren is the Original "Bardcore Genre Bender" The Master Bard himself ( Shakespeare ) would have understood exactly where Ren was coming from. Ren isn't just a songwriter but rather a Performance Art Master who blends music and character acting from all the styles over the last 500 years and makes it modern and relatable to all generations even if normally you may not be a fan of whatever genre he is currently performing. While most good Performers can envoke some emotions in their audience, Ren is an Emotion Master who has control of all of them, From the Feel Good Vibes of Bongo Bong, to the Rebellion of Illist Of Our Time, to the Tragedy of Jenny and Screech, to the Mind Bending Rap Flow of Losing It, and the Internal Psych War of Hi Ren, Ren has it All! This was a live recording. I try to warn all reactors new to Ren, do NOT react to "Violet's Tale" as a standalone video. It's available by itself as one of his newer videos, but it's actually the third part of a trilogy. The three full length videos are stitched end-to-end as a single video called "The Tale of Jenny & Screech" (which includes "Violet's Tale" although it's not in the title. The trilogy is in a style that's been dubbed "Bard core" because it's very Shakespearian and Ren is a modern bard. All three videos are also live, continuous shot recordings. Ren doesn't really fit a single genre. He tried to make his latest album, "Sick Boi" a cohesive hip-hop album, so a lot of his recent songs/videos fit that genre, but he's also a great singer, song writer, and multi-instrumentalist.

15 to 20 legit good songs? Yeah, nah mate... One might well make such an assertion after only listening to 15 - 20 of his songs, but I'm struggling to think of even one that I wouldn't consider 'legit good' (even my least favourites among his songs are arguably 'legit good', and keep sneakily growing on me) No having a go at all, and I claim no special insight or authority, but reading '15 to 20 legit good songs' just wasn't something I could scroll past blithely.

I hear you 100%. When I first heard Hi Ren, I avoided listening to any of his others for a whole week because I couldn't face the 'certain' disappointment, then I heard/saw Chalk Outlines live, and was back to risk trying Sick Boi 3 days later, next day How to be Me, and that opened the floodgates... I do agree, not every song totally hits the mark, and I can always find some technical fault with his live playing and intonation (occupational hazard) but that's never gotten in the way of enjoying a superb performance. @@Dad-JanieWorld Cheers!

@sootikins
@sootikins Жыл бұрын
Another cool technical thing is that the final chord before he takes off his guitar does not resolve the progression. It kinda leaves the listener hanging, a bit like pulling out to early. The tension created keeps you watching instead of clicking off thinking it's over, so you don't miss the final speech. Those diminished triads, strummed going up then arpeggiated going back down are indeed demonic. Legit chords but not "nice" chords.

Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's public livestreams and posts. A handful of people frequently post an earlier version of my comment to various reactions that they copied and pasted verbatim, so if this is a repeat just ignore this comment. I keep editing the information, as needed, and have removed details about Ren that some found to be too personal, such as his full name and D.O.B. All the information here was gathered exclusively from sources Ren personally approved for public release. Ren is a British musician/independent artist/producer, self-taught multi-instrumentalist; originally from Wales. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures, which eventually caused him to discontinue his studies and return home. In addition, Ren was signed by Sony Records in 2010 and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point that he was unable to go on; consequently, his contract with Sony was dissolved. Ren would later relocate to Brighton. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is in Calgary, Canada for at least six months (Summer of 2023), undergoing treatments such as IV therapy and other interventions five days a week, as well as surgeries (wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery). His Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD), which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, and adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Hence, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition. He recently took a break from treatments and returned to the UK to visit family and friends, and to produce some very ambitious musical projects to be released soon. Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel; if you are a content creator, ask your audience to subscribe to Ren. Ren's YT channel just surpassed 1 million subscribers. and his videos have garnered millions and millions of views. Listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to the world, and his work is important in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available.

Yeah man! So glad I was already subscribed to your channel and that your Hi Ren reaction popped up in my feed. You pointed out how powerful the lyrical and visual symbolic impact of the moment Ren stands on his own two feet 🙏🏼- although I have watched this over a hundred times since March, that part *ALWAYS* gets me choked up. I found Ren’s music soon after my father passed away in earlier this year. Early on Ren’s music helped me feel emotions in myself and have cathartic tears as I processed grief. Ren’s compositions and live performances like Chalk Outlines and How to Be Me also really touched my soul. His tragic trilogy of tales are another impactful work of art. And just when i started avoiding Ren cause he was a bit TOO impactful, I found his live busking videos with The Big Push and Sam Thompkins and more lighthearted songs like What You Want. 🤞🏼 hoping you’ll react to more of this amazing human and enjoy the Ren Rollercoaster that so many of us have been on! 🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼

Ren is a true talent. When, and I hope you do, check out his catalog, no song sounds the same. He can sing, rap, and storytell. He is independent, writes his own beats and words, and has a lot to say about the production with his cameraman Sam. I hope you noticed this particular song was done in one take and live. One take as in they did many takes until he found the one he liked. I would recommend a song, but they are all pieces of art. Enjoy the ride. I enjoyed your reaction.

Ren’s ability to evoke every single human emotion in his art is absolutely masterful. When you hear his story, his accomplishments are even more mind blowing. His pain, suffering, grief, love, faith, hope and even his playfulness shine like a stunningly rare diamond in the shadows of life. This piece of art transcends music and becomes something greater than a song. He is a genius of our time. His versatility and talent are completely unrivalled and I feel genuinely blessed to walk this planet at the same time as him. Welcome to the rabbit hole 🥰

Great reaction! That ’[…] the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope’-line gets me every time. He has some powerful songs, some that comment on our society and some that are fun, feel good tunes. They are all good! There is really only one, nay two ways to go wrong with Ren: 1) you stop listening 2) you listen to the tales of Jenny and Screech trilogy out of order; but there is a compilation video that put them all back to back, for convenience. A few suggestions from the above mentioned categories would be ‘How to be me’ and ‘Chalk outlines’; ‘Money Game’ (and part 2 with the same name) and ‘Love Music’ part 1-4.

This RENegade community is fantastic and so is Ren. Positivity and upliftment all round. Get used to the "that's not what I expected" feeling in every video, because Ren can do it all. One take videos, video producer, song writer, beat producer, playing guitar, bass guitar, piano and beat boxing, while also being able to sing (and have a wide range) and being a great rapper. Looking forward to seeing more!

For more story telling Ren: The Tale of Jenny & Screech (full version). For a beautiful ballad go for Chalk Outlines (live) with Chinchilla or For Joe. For some bad ass rap go for Genesis, Sick Boi, or The Hunger... for some rap with EDM go for Losing It

Like'd and sub'd! If you like the deep storytelling, I recommend The Tale of Jenny and Screech (but do the full version that includes violet's tale) and For Joe. If you'd prefer singing, Chaulk Outlines (live version) and How to be Me (live version) are great. If you like hip hop, What You Want, Murderer and Love Music part 4 are good ones. There are also videos of him busking (street performing) and he was also in a band called the Big Push (Englishman in Newyork and Bongo Bong are great). Looking forward to more ren reactions!

Ren is therapy for so many from one song he helps so many people open up in ways therapists struggle to do in person. First time i watched Hi Ren i had a panic attack but thought i needed to watch it again so i watched someone reacting to it that was the best thing i could do i have watched many times since. One thing i think about this song is it needs to be seen by every one even in schools after a certain age, because how many children kill themselves because of the negativity towards them from nasty comments and bullying to them believing what is said. I went through hell, bullied all through school to the point i attempted suicide twice, and to many issues in my life since then I am a recovering alcoholic 11 years clean I suffer PTSD and other health issues so the majority of bad days over good is high, if this bullying had been dealt with i may have had a reasonable life not the existence i have to deal with now

Ren's mad talented. Various genres, but all authentic and artistically crafted - even his "retakes" which are basically covers with all new lyrics. You'd probably enjoy their "covers," which are usually medleys or mash-ups with a little something extra. My fave is "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," but their "War Pigs" is actually a bunch of Black Sabbath with a touch of RAtM. For more autobiographical lyrics, "Sick Boi" and the latter half of "Illest of Our Time" are key. For masterful storytelling, try the trilogy, "The Tales of Jenny and Screech" or "Money Game" parts 1&2 (3 is coming in a month). For bars, try "Genesis" or "Illest of Our Time." For fast rap, "The Hunger" or "Losing It." For upbeat with a reggae/ska/soul vibe, try "Humble" or "Ocean." For singing, try "Chalk Outlines (live)" or "How to Be Me (live)." For rock-ish, try "Ready for You," "Crutch," "Wild Place" or "Hold On." And if you just want fun Ren, "What You Want," "Power," "Murderer," "1990s" or "Losing It." That's a lot, but gives you an idea of how many directions you can go. Not to mention any of his busking sessions alone or collaborating are awesome. The Ren rabbit hole goes deep.

This is the kind of artistry that gives "broken" people hope. Ren, through this performance piece, has become to a lot of people exactly what he stated in the song, "...the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope". So powerful, so impactful. The song structure itself is incredible. It starts off as a battle between his positive (Angel) and negative (Demon) aspects, the negative then makes an overpowering last ditch effort to reign supreme, tearing free and trying to take control, but ultimately fails as the final act, being the "God" aspect, emerges Triumphant, though still acknowledging and accepting that it will ALWAYS be a battle because we are all "a coin with 2 different sides". It's a beautifully cathartic and raw musical masterpiece. Ren is truly special. Welcome to the Ren rabbit-hole, it's a trip worth taking. This was the 4th take he did and yes, it was done live. Wait until you hear some of his other stuff, especially his storytelling ("The Tale of Jenny & Screech"). You haven't even touched the breadth of this young man's talent yet. The pig character (imo) represents the doctors and therapist who have essentially butchered him for years through their misdiagnosis. It's the system that focuses on peddling more pills than on genuinely trying to help to fix broken/ill people, caring more about profit than individual health. The bastardization of the hippocratic oath. He literally thought he was going insane because he was told repeatedly that the pain and symptoms he was experiencing were all in his head (psychosomatic). He had reached a point where he literally resigned himself to dying before he reached 30. Turns out he had Lyme's disease the whole time and it ran rampant through his system for 10 years, even to the point of causing brain damage. Ironically, if Ren hadn't gone through what he has, would he have ever made the art he has? There's no question that his suffering has shaped his music and now he's finally getting the recognition he undoubtedly deserves. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Ren is special.

From memory Ren. Older than you might think (born 1990) Welsh (he does speak the language, many don't) . Accent, (you asked) more Southern English, almost London (my city). . Contracted Lyme disease (bitten by a tick, will become apparent in later works). Not only misdiagnosed, but mistreated by doctors who thought the symptoms may not be "physical". The resulting treatments destroyed his physical and mental wellbeing, much of which you saw portrayed here. Having tried many cures, traditional and more bizarre, he was finally diagnosed correctly by a Belgian doctor and then began attempts to find treatment. Late last year he found a team with a suitable treatment protocol in Calgary and has been both staying there and commuting elsewhere since during his prolonged treatment. . He has other demons (look for reference to "Joe") which will also become apparent, but he's now at the point where we should "cower at the man he's become"! . Hope this helps. . Enjoy the journey.

You have stumbled into the Rebbit Hole. You have such an experience ahead of you. Depending on how you want to approach things, you can do the full version of The Tales, or if you want to keep with the themes of Hi Ren and more of Ren's backstory, I would suggest Sick Boi or the live version of Chalk Outlines. This song hit me at a very fragile time in my life, and as a consequence, has opened doors to a wonderful community of people. I am forever grateful that it showed up for me when it did.
