Though there were some big names in baseball prior to Babe Ruth, The Great Bambino was really the first sports megastar, because of the era he played in coinciding with the growth of mass media, but also because he was the first “slugger”. He revolutionized baseball and brought about the era of the home run hitter, after an era of “deadball”, (also due to balls being mass produced and switched out often during a game, rather than using one ball that was loose by game’s end).

Disagree. Someone isn't the best at their sport simply because they are a more widely known quantity. Mayweather went undefeated, and honestly wasn't even threatened in a single one of his matches. I don't think it was common back in Pele's days for South American players to leave the continent so there was still good competition. Having to work a regular job is common in poor countries or when sports aren't paying well enough. There's a reason why there are so many South American World Championship countries, especially back in the day. If South American countries could afford to keep their players, they would easily be on par if not better than any European league.

Lol they really tried to knock Pele and Bill Russell for their era and lack of competition while making a point for Babe Ruth as the GOAT when a literal entire race of people was excluded from his league. All these sports legends like Pele, Mr. Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Sugar Ray Robinson, and Jim Brown get knocked because they played so long ago, but Babe Ruth played during World War I, and he doesn't receive the same treatment. The baseball GOAT is Barry Bonds and there's no definitive close second. Mike Trout had a chance at catching Barry, but unfortunately these injuries are kicking his ass.

Only change I would make is in tennis. In last 11 years Federer was not the best player in the world. It was either Djoković or Nadal. Federer won most of his GS before Djoković and Nadal entered their prime. Federer won only 4 GS titles since 2010. And since then he just could not compete with other two. And now both Djoković and Nadal have won more GS titles and both of them have wining record against Federer. So GOAT conversation it's between Djoković and Nadal. Djoković has better wining record, but Nadal has one more GS. Nadal is better on clay but Djoković is better on grass and on hard court. Djoković is younger and healthier, so probably he will finish his career with most GS titles. Also Djoković have spent by far most weeks as number 1 player on ATP list (164 weeks longer than Nadal). Nadal won 91 ATP titles in his career, while Djoković won 87, but again Djoković is younger and has pretty good chance to overtake Nadal even in that category. For me personally Djoković is GOAT, mainly because Djoković was better than Nadal when both of them were in their prime(since 2009), but Nadal is close second and only after both of them finish their careers we will know for sure who was better.

As great as he was (and he legitimately belongs in the debate and is easily a top 3 or 5), as a massive boxing fan, I honestly don't place Ali at number 1. The greatest boxer of all time _is_ Sugar Ray Robinson, in my opinion. Muhammad Ali may very well be number 2 and perhaps could have been number 1 if he wasn't forced to lose some time in his prime (something I do not blame him for and he is absolutely the most iconic and influential boxer the sport has ever seen), but it terms of how great they were _at the sport_ it is very hard to argue against Robinson. I will say Ali could be counted as the "greatest" if we are talking about his cultural impact combined with his in-ring achievements with what he did both politically and for the promotion of the sport, but I do not think he is the greatest boxer to ever compete in the sense of being the *best* at it, I should clarify. But absolutely he is a top 5 either way and probably higher. Mayweather is in that top 5 too, as much as many hate him, and I would say Pacquiao deserves to be up there as well for his sheer amount of longevity and number of weight classes he excelled in. After that, it is really hard to choose who gets the final spot in a top 5 or even top 10 for boxing because there are many great fighters that have convincing cases to be included: Joe Louis, Roberto Duran, Roy Jones Jr., Julio Cesar Chavez, Willie Pep, Henry Armstrong, Harry Greb, Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Leonard, et al.

If you took 800 goals away from Gretzky he’d still be the top scorer in history. In early hockey fantasy leagues they split Gretzky into two people Gretzky goals and Gretzky assists. Because if you got both you would win your fantasy league easy. They also changed a rule just for him they wouldn’t allow the game to become a 4v4 from penalty boxes because if it was 4v4. To be fair, Brady's first 3 rings came when he had no true superstar Wide Receiver. You could argue Deion Branch was good for a few years, but no one truly dominant. Those first 3 he carried the offense, and the defense helped out big time. And other than an old Corey Dillon, he never had a star Running Back to take the load off him either. Montana had Jerry Rice to throw to, one of the all-time greatest WR's in the history of the NFL. It wasn't until the last 3 rings did Brady have someone like Gronkowski to throw to.

Only problem I had was with babe Ruth. Barry bonds, in my personal opinion, is the GOAT of baseball. Also with Jordan vs LeBron, Jordan has a slightly better resume, but LeBron is a better player, so it’s hard.

GOAT debates are a minefield of variables, but when it comes to Basketball, there actually IS a clear victor - one that has nothing to do with debates over stats or franchises or management. Listen to other great players of the sport. The vote for Jordan as the GOAT is practically unanimous from the people who *actually played the game at that level*.

Jon Jones did lose. He has a loss to Matt Hamill. Jon Jones and Anderson Silva both tested positive for PEDs. I believe Georges St. Pierre is the GOAT with Demetrius Johnson a close second. Honorable mention to Artem Lobov who is also in the running for GOAT in mma.

Montana wasn’t even the GOAT of his team. Jerry Rice is commonly accepted as the GOAT, and it’s pretty ridiculous that they have a long list of alternates for every other sport but can only muster Brady and another guy that has never been called the GOAT for football.

The definition of goat is subjective. Individual talent is great but some players just make everyone around them better. Wherever them they are on instantly is one of the best. Can’t believe he didn’t mention Maradona. The 86Argentina team is a good team, but Maradona single-handedly took them to the finals and won. The 1990 team was not good with injuries and he still took them to the finals. People like LeBron, everywhere they go they win. When he was in Cleveland they are on the top as soon as he leaves they are crap
@TheIcemanthomas
@TheIcemanthomas 2 жыл бұрын
Context is key for that lebron comment.. They are crap when he leaves for a reason. And it’s not just because of lebron being so good. The teams are built around him being the heliocentric figure that controls everything. So obviously if u remove the Star that everything gravitates around, the bodies in orbit delve into chaos. The system dictates the order. He implements that system everywhere he goes and there is benefit is and cons to playing that way. The pieces work fine. The problem is that lebron comes in, kicks out the players that don’t work for him and replace them with new players or force other talents to play the way he wants them too. Bosh and Kevin love are perfect examples of this. Both were dynamic players before lebron. Both forced to completely change their games to fit next to him. Both get heavily criticized for having a hard time adjusting, both immediately go back to being really good as soon as lebron leaves. Not to mention that in those trades, all of the draft picks and future prospects get shipped out, and all of the role players end up getting overpaid to stay on the team at lebrons request. So those teams are left with no star to orbit around, no assets to swap, and no draft picks for their future. So yeah, it makes total sense why they would be so bad after he leaves them for dead.

I've loved baseball my entire life and I've never once heard anyone refer to Babe Ruth as the best player of all time lol not even Yankees fans. I honestly wouldn't even put him in MY top 20 but I'm sure a lot of people would. The same way that no one would ever consider Cy Young the greatest pitcher of all time. That's not trying to disrespect either of them though or their greatness.

Mine for the four major American sports. Brady,Jordan,Gretzky, and Willie Mays. And Kobe has never really been in the goat debate. Unfortunately he played at the end of Jordan’s career and when he was in his prime Lebron came into the league. He kinda got outshined by those two

Can't speak for some of the sports here, but I have played tennis for most of my life and have followed the sport as well. Federer is no longer the GOAT and its hardly even debatable. Nadal and Djokovic both have good cases for being GOAT and the race is still ongoing, but both have surpassed Federer already. The only argument for Federer is how aesthetically pleasing his style of tennis is. He has less grand slams, a negative head-to-head against both nadal and djokovic, and has less weeks at no.1 than djokovic.

Jordan is the best but Bill Russell is the greatest. The man came to Boston and was hated by his peers, the fans. They refused to sell him a house then kept vandalizing it. He would play then join Dr King and protests (A true civil right leader). And at the same time he dominated the league, winning 8 straight rings, first black coach in professional American sports and he won there too. Plus almost undefeated in college. The man dominated his generation like nobody else
