I love these conversations. Technical, interesting, fun and engaging. McLaren have a glorious driver line up. Now they are the top team the spotlight is on them. Lando is extremely fast and recent focus has been on his starts. Personally, I think he needs to be more aggressive in wheel to wheel fights. Get his arms out so to speak. Oscar is learning fast and that stunning, sublime move on Lando at Monza clearly shows this young man has intent. Will the close of the 24 season and 25 be these two drivers going head to head for the drivers title. Quite possibly. On current form perhaps Lando has the edge but Oscar is getting stronger every race. It can only add to the thrill for us the audience, added to the Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes closeness of performance. 😊

If you have a front row lock out then whoever wins the race to the first corner should be protected by the other driver and get preference on pit stops. BUT, if the the lead driver can’t keep up the pace then the second driver should be let past. It’s no good to have a front row lockout and lose the race. They’re called team orders for a reason. The McLaren was superior from the first race of the season, but the drivers were not able to show it. Oscar because of his experience and Lando because of his constant errors. We had to wait few months to see the domination since the gap between the McLaren and the rest of the pack had increased significantly. Lando doesn't learn from his mistakes, blame others, while Oscar learn at every race and is improving constantly. If he is slightly slower than Lando, he is way more reliable and can compensate the gap. It is clear he will pass him very soon. Lando uses and abuses his status of favorites at McLaren for years against the other driver, but this time, I have the feeling he will lose the internal rivalry war.

@tomnewham1269
@tomnewham1269 2 ай бұрын
It was the 2nd race of the season. As it was early in the season, RB wanted to protect the engines as there is a limited amount of engines they are allowed to use. Finally which is usual for most teams, the driver that is ahead of their team mate gets the first choice in pit stops and that is the team orders that Mark is alluding to. But as Mark said, Vettel was being challenged by Lewis and so Seb got preferential treatment with the timing of the pit stops. If Webber had the preference with the pit stops, Mark would have easily won the race.
@grandmasterj5
@grandmasterj5 2 ай бұрын
@@tomnewham1269 oh my mistake, so yes by the second race in they should firmly have team orders in place 🤣 That had nothing to do with engines. Red bull had deals where if a particular driver had 1st place at a particular point that driver would win. Sometimes it was who finished the first lap in first, who gets to turn 1 and holds it first, and on other occasions who gets pole. It had nothing to with engine saving, it was to get them not to race and take each other off on a podium position because RB didn't trust them not to

I think Lando is currently 0.005% quicker in optimal conditions, but Oscar's falloff when things don't go to plan strategically is less than Lando's. An ideal race goes Lando's way. A messy race is likely to go Oscar's. And Oscar is willing to provoke (but not cause) wrinkles elsewhere in the field. He's not going to mess with Lando intentionally (they are teammates), but if making a bold overtake on say Sainz helps Oscar's race, but might mess with Lando's strategy, he probably won't back out of it to protect Lando's WDC bid.

You should improve Lando's "start of races, and mental" stats. Then he will maybe become champion. For now it seems Oscar is the better bet for a future McLaren champion

That magic maneuver was Oscars skill, not lando backing off. Oscar was along side him, thus by the rules to be given racing room. Lando braking later would've locked up so that would've been a torpedo max move. Nope, Lando got out driven, simple, Oscar drove away from Lando. As Lando said, if he wants the position, tell him to catch up! Acase of the biter getting bitten!

Oscar's move was 30% short of Peroni's duche factor (Imola '82), where Montoya's move on Schuf at the real "bus stop" chicane is still the best clean pass I recall (Spa 200?).

Am I the only one that doesn't think it was such a great move? Piastri was racing a guy that has one hand behind his back. Piastri was fighting for his ego with nothing to lose. Lando was thinking of a driver's championship and keeping out of trouble.

It would be incredibly dumb to ask Piastri to play second fiddle. Lando has at best a 10% chance of catching Max, so would it make sense to risk losing Piastri to another team for a 10% sniff at the title?

This podcast needs some work…settle down and relax fellas - be yourselves! Coulthard - I still remember you stuck behind the Arrows at Monaco for 40 laps. Shouldn’t have cut that deal with Mika at Melbourne… Mark - your best title chance was 2010, Korea burned… Eddie - amazing things in late 90s, particularly’99.

Points on the board this season. Norris joined the team when it wasnt as dominant as it is now, Piastri walked into the team at a very good time. Good overtakes or nothing to lose divebombs against Norris ( team mate !! ) and Leclerc. Not denying he is a very promising and present talent.

I don’t think that move around the outside of the second chicane was ‘magic’, it was reckless If he’d have tried that against any other driver he would have been taken out of the race! That was on Lando being too kind but I don’t think he’ll let it go the for a second time
