The weird thing is, Eggman was originally meant to be the hero, but he's embraced being a villain. Even when given the chance to do good, he simply prefers evil. Whether innocuously like in Sonic Boom, or drastically, like in the comics, Eggman is just plain bad.

Because gorillas have a lifespan of about 40 years, it's a one generation difference (father/son) between Jumpman and Mario, and a two generation difference (grandfather/grandson) between Cranky and Donkey.
