We all know the Broncos are struggling offensively. Why are they struggling? Is it about their quarterback? Or some other issues they have?
Time for a special edition of Studyball after last night’s Thursday night football game and all the talk about Russell Wilson and what happened at the end of the game. I just had to check on the film and show you guys what I saw last evening. Again, I can’t show every play. I am going to show some things that I saw and some of the struggles they are having, especially issues in the redzone. It just seems like when you play football, you need a break. You need something to go your direction and everyone around the board needs to clean up. Their quarterback, frankly, needs to play better. Needs to understand what he is seeing and the play designers have to help him in certain situations. Anyway, a lot of stuff is going on in Denver. I am not sure the sky needs to fall quite yet. They have a record of 2-3. They have been very close in some other games. It’s not like all doom and gloom. But this thing could be completely diff had they been able to put some things together. Russ has to be better in certain situations and has to be better in making the decisions and seeing the field. Let’s look at the tape!
There is a lot of blame to go all over this offense. But a lot of it has to fall on Russ. He has to be better. Plain and simple. He has got to have a better overall understanding of what he is seeing and where different throws have to go. Could he get a bit of help with the execution? The play design? No doubt about it. But when you watch the film, you see it. There are guys open all over the place. There are big plays to be had. There is no excuse that you didn’t score a touchdown in this game. There is no excuse with how good the defense played and as bad as Indy played offensively. When you see all the plays that were out there to be had, yes a lot can come down to the last play and it was there. It shouldn’t have ever been that close in the game because the opportunities that were out there. We have got to clean them up. The pressure situations and taking advantage of the big plays. Understanding where the disconnect is with Russell throwing it deep when Jerry Jeudy is flattening his route? I don’t know. I am not in the meetings and definitely say who is more at fault than others. All I know is we have to get it figured out. Why is there the disconnect? The figuring out has to happen fast. They were surviving, winning a couple of games but it is still ugly 5 weeks into the season. They have got tough schedules coming up. They have a tough division. You’re not going to win many games playing like this. You’re not going to see many offenses that struggle as much as Indy’s is to give you a chance to even win a game like this if you miss all the opportunities.
That’s what I’m seeing in Denver. All disjointed and all out of whack right now. Starts with the QB but doesn’t end there. We have other issues on this team. We have got to get it cleaned up. The team is too talented, quarterback is too good to continually be making these mistakes over and over. #russellwilson #denverbroncos #nfl

Thinking fast, reading defenses and timing throws like threading a needle at 20 yards is just the beginning. Kurt Warner has ALWAYS impressed me with his ability to do all of this stuff coupled with a lightning quick release. Add that he’s a genuinely good human being on par with the likes of Walter Payton, and he’s one of the standout players in the NFL of all time. That’s my opinion, of course, but I know I’m not alone. Cards were completely transformed just by his presence on our team. I know. I was at the very first game of the then Phoenix Cardinals and watched year after year of mediocre Cardinals football. When the Cards announced they were bringing Kurt to the team, I KNEW we were in for something special. Say what you will about Ken Whisenhunt, he nailed that one. One play between us and the Super Bowl upset of the century. Still listed in the top 10 SBs ever played. That is Kurt Warner.

This happened to the Giants when they got Coughlin as headcoach. But after a couple of seasons Eli knew what to do and the o-line just the receivers kept running wrong route. Break out instead of in and the ball goes sailing down the middle of the field full of defenders. Yet we pulled it together for 2 of those years. Broncos probably will too.

Can't fix the problem which is Wilson. The game film shows players running wide open since week one. It should not take a whole off season and 5 games to understand the offense. Unfortunately Russ leaves cleans pockets and makes bad throws and decisions.

@isaiahakaic6386 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelrasmussen7357 you are 1000% right about the clean pocket. since Seattle Russ was doing that. The one thing I hope you are wrong about is it can’t be fix. To me it seems Russ doesn’t trust anyone but Judy and he seems to be frazzled and not sure about the plays. Russ tends to improve between week 4 to week 10 so I am hoping with more film and repetition he will fix these issues. As a Russ fan he gets 90% of the blame but the coach should see this guy is not there yet so kick the field-goal.

@@michaelrasmussen7357 TBF I don't think Russ leaves clean pockets intentionally. I think he moves out of pocket because he can't see behind the line. I could be completely wrong but that's what it seems like. It makes it hard for him to go through progressions the way a QB in the pocket should be doing. This film review is great and shows to me that Russ just isn't connected with his receivers yet, our O-line in particular isn't ideal either. Regardless this film just shows that everything is fixable but that comes down to the coaching staff and Russ adjusting to his receivers.... With all the injuries that plague the Broncos, this season might be over. I personally thought this whole year was just a development year for everyone and we weren't going to contest with the already established AFC West this year.

As a Broncos fan, thank you for taking the time to diagnose these key plays. It sheds new light in my mind, that Hackett is calling good plays for the most part, Russell is just not seeing the opportunities. I feel that part of that reason is he doesn't trust all his receivers and I can't blame him for that because they have let him down, except Courtland and especially Juedy. Juedy, should be playing better for his draft position. I think the Broncos need to draft the best possible WR(s) available in their upcoming drafts, and move on from the ones Elway drafted. KJ Hamler could have potential, but sadly he just never gets any throws his way or he is hurt and rehabilitating. The TE room is weak! Need to find good talent and depth in that room! Also, I think Juedy needs someone to work with him to learn how to read the defense and/or how to focus on the catch. He can catch uncontested thrown balls, but when it is tightly covered, he usually loses the battle for the ball which is unacceptable for someone picked that high.

You are such a kind and diplomatic man. Thank you for that. Having watched Russ “cook” here in Seattle, I will simply say I don’t think Denver did their homework. Russ will do Russ but anything else is an arduous road. I wish him well. And I now wonder about all those years of maligned O lines …

@@CoronaHoax-nd2rr I'm straight thrilled with the trade, denver keeps losing and improving our draft position, the players we got from the trade are all awesome. Now denver can't pay to keep chubb, probably can't pay, hamler or juedy, and have no high draft picks, not salty on this end. Enjoy Russell wilson

What do you mean by enjoy Russel Wilson? I used to tell Seahawks fans Wilson was overrated and I was told I was stupid. Never once heard a Seattle fan say they wanted to get rid of him until AFTER he was gone lmao. Denver will finish 8-9 or something those picks aren't going to be anything special

Great breakdown, thank you! I especially like the discussion of the timing windows in the red zone and how that affects where the QB's eyes need to be compared to when it's open field, and the discussion of how the QB needs to be looking for those hot throws when a defender is running free.

Great breakdown. Can we get a breakdown of a Wilson game from last year when he was playing well with the Seahawks? I'd say that would give us some insight of what the issues are with Wilson now. Was the offensive system better last year? Was the personnel better? Was the play calling better suited for Wilson? Was Wilson just playing better in terms of footwork, reading the defense, and was he more accurate?
@jamslam5641
@jamslam5641 Жыл бұрын
He wasn't playing well, it was statistically his worst season ever. He kept missing wide open receivers for long TDs that would've won them 3-5 more games and helped them make the playoffs. If you were watching closely enough you could tell he was washed up in Seattle. That's why I said it was a GREAT trade for Seattle to get all those stockpile of picks prior to last season.

Great analysis Kurt. As a long time Sea Hawk fan keep in mind with Russell. When the pocket is forming if he knows where he’s going with it at that point he can make the play. If he doesn’t know yet he can’t see over the linemen when the pocket forms and he looks for his escape hatch. When you freeze a play and look what’s going to happen with the receivers you have to look if the pocket has formed. If so, he can’t see it.
