Hockey 100%. Football isn't even #2. Rugby is, rugby may be #1. Football has better athletes (bigger, stronger, faster) but hockey players today are 100% more likely to stay on the ice through anything.

Agreed. As far as most athletic, football hands down. Coaching matters most in football as well. Though all the sports are very close technical/skill-wise, in their own ways, I have to give it to football, especially CB's

Rugby isn't tougher than football because the big guys in rugby (the forwards) have to be able to run and handle the ball and they don't spend all the time in constant contact. Football you have people who's only job is to hit. I think hockey players are the toughest because there's a stigma against sitting out when hurt especially in playoffs. Guys play through anything.

Actually, yes - they would survive. The ball is only actually in play for 17 minutes in a football game. Divide that into offence and defence and football players only have to play for 8-9 MINUTES A WEEK!. A damn week. It’s their non-game day training that makes football so intense for its athletes. If they went to an 82 game schedule, the Tues-Friday training would change accordingly and they’d be just fine.

Honestly I’d rather be hit harder and few times than getting knocked multiple plays. But I’m a football player who just couldn’t afford the opportunity to play hockey. My high school didn’t even have a hockey team. I always wanted to play hockey because I played football and other than the obvious differences between the sports they’re kinda similar. But there are sooo many players throughout football history that were a million times tougher than some hockey players. I don’t think there is a definite answer to this question. But back in the day both hockey and football were dangerous sports. The rules change how people perceive the sports. Like people say nfl players aren’t tougher just solely based off the NFL rules. So there is no definite answer
@jordanjohnson3396

No you don’t get hit more often in football. Tackling someone is not consider a hit. When the ball is snapped, line men are pushing shoving and grabbing to create space, those are not hits. Hits are typically two people running into each other sideways or face to face. Each NHL team averages 20-30 legit hits per game. So in one game you’re seeing 40-60 plus hits. If it’s a rivalry game or playoffs; easily upwards of 80. Bringing someone down to the ground In football by grabbing, spinning, or catching their foot is not a hit… just because it’s considered a tackle doesn’t mean it’s HIT THOUGH. That would be like an NHL player tripping another player and counting it as a hit. Not how that works. Football has more required contact because of linemen but in hockey a hit is literally a hit. It’s not a diving tackle from behind around someone’s waist to bring them down to the ground.

@@jordanjohnson3396 pre 2000 NFL a player definitely gets hit more than NHL. Even QBs pre 2000 were hit 20 times a game. Today defenders have to slow down and can't hit QB late especially for frauds like Tom Brady. Jim Kelly, Ron Jawroski, Aikman were hit a lot more than NHL. Today's NFL is crap. Hockey 100% Football players, on average, are 20% bigger but NHL hits are actually 17% harder than football hits speeds upto 30mph each way so hits up 60mph, then you fall on ice. Not to mention, stitches, lacerations, broken bones ( which they play on and don't leave the ice til the whistle) and hockey is 60 full minutes. They play 82 games a year PLUS playoffs, 16 to 28 games to win it. Football - 16 games a year, 2 games to win Superbowl, not to mention there is on average 11 minutes a GAME and there are TWO lines. Hockey equipment is slighter and you fall on ice, it's not nullified. Hockey, hands down.

Hockey for sure. People play with broken feet, ankles, wrist, jaws... Plus you're playing every other day, instead of once a week. Puck is dangerous, ice is dangerous, the boards, and other dudes sticks. I don't think it's even close. I would say the impact of the hits are similar, but with hockey, most of the time it's getting hit into something else like the boards, net, bench. Where as the NFL it's just getting hit.

Both are physically demanding sports, but hockey players without any doubt are a tougher calibre of athlete. Put the fights to the side. You have big men barreling down the ice at speeds of 20 to 25 mph on skates, plowing one another into the boards. How about taking a 100 or 110 mph puck in the face or some other part of the body, and then getting back on the ice after you’ve been stitched up. But put all that aside, what makes NHL players tougher is the number of games played in a season. NFL players have 17 games in a season, NHL players play a grueling 82 games (41 at home / 41 away). By the time they reach the playoffs they are battered and exhausted from 82 games and constant travel. NFL players have it easy compared to NHL players.

Actual play time in an NFL game 11 to 13 minutes... split between the 'D' and the 'O'. Actual playtime of a hockey game... 60 minutes. Some horses in hockey play 25 to 30 minutes per game. 1 game a week vs. 3. This is a joke question.

11-13 minutes? Tf you smokin. Each quarter is 15 minutes long. Not including timeouts, OT, and all the other shit that comes with it. It’s 60 minutes+ depending on the game your offense can be out there longer than the defense. Or the other way around. Football is more unpredictable than hockey is because hockey is like basketball in the sense that sides can flip any moment and most times don’t have time to change players. But that’s why they have different lines so mfs ain’t in the game all the time. Football you’re out there until you get pulled or until a change of possession. You could be on defense and you get a interception just for a fumble to occur the next play and you gotta go back out there again with barely having a break. There is no answer to this question

But a hockey player rarely has to worry about the type of injury Joe Theisman went through. No hockey player will have a 200+ man jumping on his back to tackle him. But the craziest injury I’ve ever seen was from hockey when a goal tender had his neck slashed by a skate. Thank god he lived because that would’ve been tragic. But honestly the ice isn’t even a big factor considering hockey skates are just like rollerblades but on ice. To them it’s like walking so it’s not much of a big difference maker.

They are both tough, but a different kind of tough. An analogy is that hockey players are in a demolition derby over a longer period of time, whereas football players are in a crash test dummy car for a shorter period of time. Once in a while you get a monster hit in hockey, in football they happen 1 out of 5 plays. Could Ray Lewis take a slapshot to the ankle have his teeth knocked out and get back out on the ice in a couple shifts? Could Patrick Kane run up the middle and get tackled by 300 pound lineman and get back up 3 times in a row? Its a draw in my opinion, different kind of punishment they endure, you gotta be half crazy to play either sport.

Hockey. Blocking shots, taking checks by a fast skater, 100mph shots over an 82 game season followed by a post season that last months? Add fighting, purposely getting hit in the face then returning to the game. Hockey is a much faster game. Footballs tough too but the season is much shorter, one game a week, are you kidding? Theve got 7 days to heal and recover. Hockey has back to back games and overtime, games can last hours. It's such a fast sport, the average shift is a minute. You have to race up and down that rink while opponents are elbowing, high sticking, tripping...watch how the players are breathing after a shift. Plus you can be 300 lbs and play football, you've got to spend the time and energy keeping yourself in shape to play hockey

BRAYLON, you do realize players are hit blindly almost every game in the NHL right??? This talk about taking a slant pass and not seeing it coming is literally the same thing as an NHL player accepting a pass then being destroyed in centre ice. Both sports have blind hits where you have to commit to the pass. The difference is that NHL players are moving faster when that hit is delivered. No matter how you chalk it up it’s the NHL all day. And I’m Bi racial. I get both sports wand played both.

Braylon Edwards seems butt hurt because he can't make a valid argument when comparing football to hockey. It shouldn't really matter if you are able to play any of these sports professionally. It takes lots of skill and ability to perform at that level. In my opinion, I would have to say that collectively hockey is the tougher sport.

There's a reason why NHL players play 82 games compared to the NFL, who play 17 per year: the NFL is far more physically devastating.

Hockey players have died from the game - one hit in the head with a puck, bone was checked in chest and died later in hospital. Hockey injuries are the same as football, but happen more frequently and it's normal to spit chicklets, get stitches on the bench, play while injure - broken ribs, punctured lung, broken feet, broken legs, broken jaws....they play through it - hockey all day long

In my opinion, hockey breeds tougher and possibly more athletic players pound for pound than football does, and is by far the most underrated professional sport in the world. Football has strength, but basically every other category goes to hockey; from speed, agility, hand eye, iq, etc.

Joe thiesman took two years to come back. NHL players have died on the bench and tried to come back the next period.nuf said. You get hit in football then head to the bench for a break hockey take a hit and keep going. If you think football is so tough put on a pair of skates and get on the ice , both of my Knees are shot and I could still hit you hard enough to make you call for your mama to come and help you
