Will's point was more that there is no point in attaching so much importance to a fictional story that if it goes wrong or gets ruined (the travesty that is the sequel trilogy), the story getting ruined means your life is ruined too

I have to disagree with Will. I was Star Wars fan for almost 20 years, collecting stuff, sucking all information I could find, I even build 3m tall wearable Lego Boba Fett costume for college party. Hell, Star Wars was the reason I started my career as a programmer because I wanted to create Star Wars dedicated website. After The Force Awakens I thought it was a decent effort to merge old with new and was still 100% believer. Then came The Last Jedi and I lost it, in single film Rian Johnson managed to destroy my years lasting passion for Star Wars, suddenly the magic was gone, he ruined Star Wars for me. I have not seen any new Star Wars stuff since, The Return of Skywalker, The Mandalorian, Andor, Bad Batch... I know of their existence, my old self would watch them the very first second of their release, my current broken self does not give a damn and will probably never see them on my own. It also cost me few friends as I no longer cared about the main topic we talked about. So yeah, if the movie sucks it matters, it has impact. (Star Wars is not dead to me, but where once burned a pyre of passion now flickers only a candle of fond memories.)

Yeah but you will have paid to go to the cinema and watch a really well hyped up movie and wasted your money. (if it was bad) All the hype those movies have ruin it when the expectations aren't met, and generally it's pretty hard to meet them. Star Trek is better for this because there isn't much hype so when the movie is rubbish (which a lot of them are) no one cares much. Ofc it means they keep making more shit ones lol
