@@jaredwilson1938 Margaret Sanger started her crusade in large part to DECREASE abortion. She thought prevention was the way to stop abortions. As far as the public generally, in major ways we've gone the OPPOSITE of what Sanger wanted. She believed only married people should have a common domicile and married couples should have a permit for parenthood. Not only is parenthood not licensed but it no longer even has the bare minimum of marriage prior to it. In addition, we've gutted Sanger's basic vision by having people of opposite sex have common domiciles (living together, cohabiting, shacking up) without marriage. Her influence wasn't that powerful or neither cohabiting nor single mother would ever have become common.

Five years ago I was having lunch with coworkers. We were talking about people we admired, and one woman said everyone should admire Margaret Sanger for Planned Parenthood. I looked at her and said, "Do you know that she advocated eugenics?" No one at the lunch table knew what eugenics meant, and the woman jumped up from her seat and screamed at me, "Whatever eugenics is you're lying! " She didn't even know the meaning or implications of the term, but she was defending Sanger. Another person looked up Sanger on his cellphone, and he began reading her bio. When it came to eugenics, and what the word meant, people at the table weren't too happy. I had bet them $50 that Sanger was an advocate for eugenics, and they told me I was a liar. Surprise!!!! I took my $50, went back to my desk for the afternoon, and hoped that they realized the racism that Sanger proposed all in the name of weeding out undesirable genes and populations. Where did “reproductive rights” come from? A lot of people mistakenly think Planned Parenthood or even Margaret Sanger coined the term “reproductive rights”. However, it was Soviet Russia who coined the term “reproductive rights”. In October 1920, with the “Decree on Women’s Healthcare,” Soviet Russia became the first government in Europe to legalize abortion on demand. The government launched a massive propaganda drive to “educate” women in their “reproductive rights.” Margaret Sanger did not coin this expression. She borrowed it from Soviet Russia, which she visited in 1935. Returning from this trip, Sanger wrote: “Russia today is the country of the liberated woman,” the delight of the “staunchest feminist”.

It is. I summarized this issue briefly in a paper I wrote on common pool resources. Children may take parents out of the workforce for many years, and the return to the workforce is often difficult, as the parent who left the workforce is generally 'behind the times' as it is often said. The workplace is always evolving, new technology is being implemented, and it is now more vital than ever to remain in the workforce as long as you can, as the economy is rapidly declining. There is also the issue of the education of the youth. There are many children today who cannot count change or tell time on an analog clock. Our education system is pathetic, especially when compared to India, China, and Japan. The youth are not being taught how to think, but rather what to think, and no dissent is tolerated. The school systems are also unsafe, and with the rise of the 'transformers' as we'll call them, I think it is clear as day why things are becoming much worse. There is also the occasional instance of a lunatic firing a weapon in schools, which is an issue that the previous generations didn't have to deal with. The world is also overpopulated, and an equivalent amount of resources are now having to be distributed to a greater number of people. There are many problems with the welfare state and foreign aid, but that discussion would fill a book. Still, the resources will not last forever. While we will not immediately run out, it is unwise to table the matter indefinitely. I could continue, but I believe we have adequate evidence that the greatest human rights violation is not happening in a prison of some third world country. Rather, the greatest human rights violation is the creation of new life, and it's happening all across the globe. The fact that Planned Parenthood is working to negate these issues is commendable, and they are from my perspective, certainly a net benefit to society. Even so, I hope there is a day when their services are unnecessary, as humanity itself realizes that it's continuation is unethical.
@St.IrenaeusOfLyonsАй бұрын
@@josiahwright3751 You believe that killing innocent human beings, sometimes torturously as is the case with many late-term abortions, is necessary because, according to you, the world is overpopulated. I think you are wrong about population and find it pathetic that you think that homicide is a good means to solving problems. There should be a good means to a good end. Your end (the need to reduce population) is dubious and your means to it is horrible and unjust. You mentioned in your first paragraph "common pool resources." Are you familiar with Elinor Ostrom, who, though she might have denied the claim, effectively debunked the work of Garrett Hardin, who, for example, supported China's One-Child policy and who popularized the idea of the tragedy of the commons? Ostrom won a shared Nobel Prize in Economics in 2009 for her economic analysis of the commons. Hardin wound up apparently killing his wife and himself in 2003, you know, to save the planet.
@josiahwright3751Ай бұрын
@@St.IrenaeusOfLyons Homicide? No, certainly not. It's a blatant violation of human rights to prematurely deprive a living person of life, with the exception of a capital sentence following conviction for extremely serious crimes. If you allow homicide, you open pandora's box, potentially creating a precedent for the elimination of the elderly, psychologically and physically impaired, and many other types of people. This is certainly not the answer. Abortion does not deprive any living person of life, but is an approved medical procedure, comparable to removing a parasite from a host. I would argue that the ethical reasons are more important, and that overpopulation and economic responsibility both contribute to this broader issue. I would cite Garrett Hardin, in the Tragedy of the Commons where he makes the same argument that freedom to breed is intolerable because society is devoted to the welfare state. By preventing the creation of new life, we will reduce the surplus population, as it is generally those who are unable to financially support a child without governmental assistance who are seeking abortions. Garrett Hardin's philosophy is one that you will generally either completely agree with or fully reject. I fall into the former category, and while my paper goes into much greater detail as to why, I would argue that Mr. Hardin's death only reinforces what he stated in his writing: conscience is self eliminating, and it is because of this fact that the world will always be plagued with those who support the continuation of humanity, unless we are so fortunate as to see some world-ending phenomenon that eliminates humanity in its entirety. I would argue that Ostrom did not, in fact, negate the truth behind the tragedy of the commons, and while she did make some valid points relating to alternative methods of preserving common pool resources, it did not address the greater issue that Earth's natural resources are indeed finite. Given a large enough window of time and a large enough population, these resources will indeed run out. Maybe not this year, this decade, this century, or even this millennium, but who can truly say for certain? While it is possible to slow the decline, she was unable to do that which is impossible, and present a solution to the inevitable depletion of the world's resources. Fortunately, Garrett Hardin provided such a solution. Revoke the freedom to breed, and allow humanity to disappear from the surface of the planet. Allow the world to return to it's natural state, without the plague that is humanity. Just an additional note: I do not advocate for population reduction, defined as the premature termination of life. I do advocate for population control, defined as a hard limit on the number of people allowed to breed, which will steadily decrease, ideally eliminating humanity within three generations.

One problem with this whole thing is that Margaret Sanger wasn't omnipotent and she is incorrectly linked to abortion. She founded the American Birth Control League. Over her objections, others decided to change it to Planned Parenthood. Margaret Sanger got into the concept of preventing unplanned pregnancies from her anti-abortion feelings. As a nurse, she was called to attend a married woman was sick due to illegal abortion. Her upset at this thing may have led her to deride abortionists as "bloodsuckers with MD after their names." The married woman asked the doctor how to prevent the next pregnancy. "Tell Jake to sleep on the roof," he replies. A few months later, Sanger was called to assist after this same woman had self-aborted. The woman died. Only a few months after that, she was called to assist another woman also sick from abortion. Sanger believed contraception would decrease, perhaps even eliminate abortion. You can ask why she didn't tell these women to just stop having sex. Married men regarded sex as a right within marriage and would rarely agree to abstinence. They were also usually unsympathetic to the idea of contraception as they regarded getting the wife pregnant each year as proof of virility and another right of marriage. However, wives, who had to actually suffer through the pregnancies and childbirths, and who were terribly distressed when unable to adequately feed or clothe a child, tended to welcome Sanger's goal of preventing pregnancies that would end in either abortion or children neglected. Of course, men CAN be concerned about these things. In an article about rural poverty in the "US News & World Report," I recall a father "who suffered the humiliation of being unable to feed his child for 3 days." That could indeed be awful.
