@zarekodynski90773 ай бұрын
Honestly this is what should happen imo. I think that letting a character die and be succeeded by their pupils who are their own character is a good thing. I do not like the whole "there always has to be a Batman" thing that turns Batman into a mantle or idea rather than a person.

7:14 The only thing they shouldn't have done with Terry was retcon him into being Bruce's son. Him being a former criminal who became Batman to atone for his past was better. A character doesn't have to be related to Bruce by blood or adoption to be Batman.
@justyouraveragejoe94543 ай бұрын
I don't think that was a retcon, I genuinely believe that was the plan from the start. Two red headed parents had two black haired boys who resemble Bruce? It probably would have been part of the continuity for the show if it hadn't gone off the air after Season 3.

Cassandra Cain and Tim Drake should work together to be Batman. She’s out doing the fighting and he’s the man in the chair. Batman is ultimately a symbol and a legend, so there’s no reason he couldn’t be made of multiple people.
@shadowjohn293 ай бұрын
Honestly, I feel Damian doesn’t get enough credit. Initially, I hated him-his introduction was designed to make him unlikeable, and the writing succeeded in that. However, over time, his character has undergone such a dramatic transformation that he’s now my favorite Bat-family member, second only to Dick. While I agree he might not be the best choice to become Batman, it’s not so much about his desire to take on the mantle, but more about how his current arc makes striving for it seem like a regression. His decision to break away from Bruce for a period of time is what allowed him to grow and detach himself from being just Batman’s son or Ra's al Ghul’s grandson. In many ways, given how well he works with Dick, succeeding him as Nightwing might be the better role for him.
@cabbagecart-u3xАй бұрын
tbh damian should either become his own vigilante like all the robins did when they graduated from the mantle, or become a painter who lives in the countryside with his roommate being jon kent. i think making him batman would be ghoulish, seeing as hes lived in his family legacy's shadow his entire life. a damian nightwing is awesome, the black and red suit was practically made for him. hard agree :D

They have put a lot of effort into Damian’s growth since 2021. I also believe strongly that Damian should not become Batman, but I get the sense he doesn’t even want it anymore. He’s come so far from what Grant Morrison intended for the character. In the same way that Dick has taken everything he learned from Batman to establish his own legacy, I think Damian is following that pattern. He’s not just Batman’s legacy. He’s Talia’s too. To choose one or the other wouldn’t truly reflect who he is, and I think Damian realizes that at this point in time. Aside from in the Wonder Woman backups, I wonder if this change in Damian’s trajectory is why they’ve started pushing other characters to step into Batman’s legacy in his absence.

Tim Drake. Dick became Nightwing and something more, Jason works better doing what he does with a team like the Outlaws (even though he's the Batman of that team), Damian becomes his grandfather's heir as the leader of the League of Assassins, and Terry is something else entirely. But Tim has what it takes as a detective to pull it off, surpassing even Bruce in that department. And while he has known loss he was not broken by it like Bruce was.

Agreed, Tim's whole character conception was that he's someone who realizes that Gotham needs a Batman and is willing to sacrifice his life to be Robin and make sure the legacy of Batman continues properly. I feel with dick as Batman in Gotham given the time he could wipe out crime in Gotham entirely or at least as close as it could ever get closer than Bruce could ever get also most of the heroes in the universe have nothing but the utmost respect for dick they would follow him into battle and listen to his commands without a second thought because he garners just that much respect amongst everyone He's the perfect mix of Batman and Superman he was trained by Bruce to be one of the best combatants in the DC universe And in terms of hopefulness and goodness he could be the one person that rivals Superman in that aspect

Well to play devil's advocate with Jason i think he could be a good batman. Especially where he's at currently where he's not that blood thirsty anymore killing people left and right. There have been storylines where Jason used rubber bullets and just beat the person into submission as opposed to killing them. He knows how criminals work and how the underbelly of crime moves and operates. I mean he would be a more well trained, calmer version of Thomas Wayne batman but knows when to dish out the pain and know when to hold back.

I think it would be interesting to see a story where the Return of the Joker events happen, but instead of kid Tim, he’s grown and has taken the mantle of Batman. The Bat Family, including Nightwing come to his aid, and everything happens as it was shown, Joker’s death included. Dick acknowledging something like this being why he never took up the mantle, and that’s what leads to Bruce creating the Batman Beyond suit for himself. This is the major reason manga is so compelling. The characters go on arcs and then the story ends (for the most part lmao). I honestly don’t know how many more times I can read Batman fights Joker. The story needs an ending. Even reading Joker War it’s clear the writers know this too. But of course the best answer is indeed Tim.

If Bruce dies in Gotham, it should definitely be Tim. He's the most sound guy for the job and can eventually pass the mantle to Damien if he wants it. If Bruce doesn't die, Terry McGinnis is the best decision. It will show that Batman worked. A world was created where someone chose to be Batman rather than was forced into it in a manner of speaking. And Bruce taking on the role of Oracle to help guide Terry as he learns "How to Batman" is the best ending for him because he'd still be Batman, just letting someone who wants to do the field work do so.

All of them. The absence of Bruce’s Batman won’t be filled by one heir. Tim becomes the International Batman, using his genius to keep an eye on the bigger picture and lead his siblings. Jason becomes Gotham’s Batman, redeeming himself and honoring the father he so often found himself struggling to embrace or be embraced by. Damian becomes a sort of mystic/Justice League Dark Batman, using the blood of the demon and his resources as the demon’s head to manage supernatural threats. Dick remains Nightwing, strictly offering guidance and support to his brothers as he did for his father unless called upon to put on the cowl because Nightwing is Batman’s greatest success and the next evolution of the Batman.

For me personally, it always comes down to Tim Drake and Cassandra Cain. Dick doesn't want it. Jason CAN'T do it. (And I shouldn't really have to explain why.) Damien is still too undeveloped in my opinion to have earned it, and also just... no. I really like the scene in the "Batman: Beyond the White Knight" story by Sean Murphy, where Bruce has escaped prison and is looking for one of his safehouses. He's got a computerized version of Jack Napier in his head (long story), and Jack seems surprised by how careful and methodical he is. Bruce responds; "You and all your friends thought I was just a guy in body armor looking to brawl." You keep forgetting I was mostly a detective." That line has stuck with me as quintessentially Batman, and that's why Tim is the top choice. Batman is the World's Greatest Detective, and that will always be who he is. Beyond the tech, the fighting skills, the legacy, any of that; he's a man who solves crimes. And that is Tim's whole thing! He is Bruce's successor as a detective. Batman originated in "Detective Comics," and that's how he should be. My top pick will always be Tim. Cassandra Cain is a purely biased pick, because she is my favorite batfamily member. First off, gonna say it, Batman is a symbol, not a gender. Anyone can do it. Your average Gotham citizen or criminal usually sees Batman as a cryptid or shadow, so they wouldn't even know she was a woman under the cowl, especially if she's rocking a voice modifier. Cass has the best fighting skills of any of Batman's proteges, her relationship with Bruce is so wholesome and touching (when DC remembers she's his adopted daughter and not just another sidekick to throw into crossovers) and to spin off of what I said about detectives earlier; I swear there was a run where she was learning to retool her "combat perception" into forensic skills, which would be an incredible ability as a detective. If that didn’t happen, egg on my face and I own up to it, but I frankly love the idea. In my headcanon, Cass is Batman. The only reason I don’t consider Terry is because he originates from the DCAU, not mainline continuity. The DCAU is an amazing group of shows, and they were an introductory to the DC Universe for a lot of fans. But they weren’t for everyone. Newer fans just getting into things haven't always caught up with it, and older fans may be conflating the two continuities too much in their heads. So I think there's a barrier to entry for Terry. On top of that, the idea of legacy is kinda lost with him. The person to put on the cowl after Bruce isn't one of his proteges after they've gone on a journey, it's some random kid. Also, call me a softie, but I always hoped Gotham would be a little brighter and more optimistic in a potential future, the opposite of Neo-Gotham. So Tim and Cass fit more in my opinion. And, from a storytelling perspective, watching either Tim or Cass struggle with the anxieties and problems of being Batman is so endlessly interesting to think about, and I already watched through a show of Terry doing that. So I'd be interested in seeing something new. TLDR; My top choice is Tim, second up is Cass

For me my head canon is, Dick is Batman directly after Bruce and Terry is the Batman when the Bat Family have aged and no longer physically able to do it. Plus I feel like people underestimate how much Dick came to enjoy being Batman.

Terry McGinnis proved to be not only worthy, but in some ways better, than Bruce. Obviously, that is largely due to having Bruce being his mentor. Tim Drake, I think, is a similar kind of character, to Terry. He understands what the mantle of the Batman means, what it requires, and he has been able to learn from both the successes and failures of Bruce, and the rest of the Bat Family. He is not only the logical choice, he is the best choice.

Terry McGinnis hands down. Unlike the rest of the batfamily, he shares the same ideals as the original batman while doing his own thing

Terry Mcginnis. He is able to have a better life than Bruce and was willing to become Batman. Dick openly doesn't want to be batman. Tim is the second best choice while Jason shouldn't because he is too willing to kill as well as Damien

To me Damian makes the most sense! Besides the fact he’s his son he is definitely fitting of Batman! You guys need to give him a better chance and read some more Damian stories!

I imagine in a different realm, a variant of Richard “Dick” Greyson, he chose to take up the mantle, after Bruce’s death. I also imagine many years later, a clone was made of him, who became Future-Batman aka (Batman Beyond).

I don't agree on the statement that Batman always sees the worst in people while Dick doesn't. The only times i saw Batman expecting the worst from people was when one of his villains exited Arkham/Blackgate cause of a sudden change of heart (like with Penguin in Love Bird) but to be honest can you blame him? How many times another of his villains used the same trick just be free and return to their usual shenanigans? When Batman isn't written like a rabid control freak that keeps tabs even on his dog i would say he's one of DC's most hopeful characters, after all he proposed Joker to help him for rehabilitation in the Killing Joke. P.S. As for the question posed in the video i think no one should inherit the mantle: - Damian will understand, sooner or later, that his desire to succeed Batman wasn't natural but forced since childbirth and will move on (like Nightwing) - We all know that Jason isn't suited to become the next Batman, he'll be an Azbat 2.0 - We all saw what happens when Nightwing inherits the mantle in Prodigal Son, Dick simply isn't built to hold Bruce's mantle (i'm not talking from a physical pov but a mentality one) and it would hurt his character development since it's from Wolfman's Teen Titans that Dick tries to escape Bruce's shadow - Tim is surely the best option of the Robin bunch but again i don't believe (much like Dick) that he has the mental fortitude to keep the cowl - the only problem i have with Terry is that the setting he has in Batman Beyond to become the new Batman doesn't fit well with the entire Bat-family concept, how is that possible that all of Batman's loved ones abandoned him? I can understand it in the Timmverse cause that Bat-family was very limited in numbers and all of them have a reason to stay away from Bruce (especially Dick thanks to Bruce Timm's kinks) but in the comics? Nah, Bruce won't be alone when he'll grow older, it'll completely undermine the entire development of Bruce's evolution in Batman Knightfall

Who should take up the mantle of the bat? Nobody. Just let Tim Drake's Robin become Gotham's new protector, leading an all new Bat family (or Robin Family). Batman is a deeply flawed concept. Nightwing is what Batman should be. But Robin, Tim Drake's Robin to be precise, is the hero Gotham needs An argument could be made for Terry, but if I were to make a DC universe, he wouldn't be introduced until long after Tim is an old man, no longer physically capable of being Robin

I enjoyed Batman beyond, but I honestly don’t think terry did that good a job. If he didn’t have a cyber suit he would’ve been in the hospital for how bad at fighting he was, and if he didn’t have Bruce or Sam he wouldn’t’ve gotten very far on the detective side. Maybe he does better in the comics but I haven’t read any of those. And those are problems I don’t think any of the other bat protégées would’ve had: Dick could hold his own in a fight even against super powered foes and Tim was nearly Batman’s intellectual equal. Granted I can cut terry some slack since it seemed like it was his first year on the job, and he was relying on natural talent instead of training, but at the end of the day he got lucky in a lot of departments. Honestly this seems a bit random but I think Jason Tod is the best Batman successor, because he’s the only one who can get as dark as Bruce and has the skills and intimidation to pull it off. I feel that we could get a dark ark of the Batman who kills before something or someone happens to Tod to force him to confront himself and chill out, because he’s not an irredeemable psycho he has just put himself on the opposite side of Batman ideologically because of a very traumatic event. And if something were to happen that could snap him out of the red hood mindset he could be a good Batman, albeit one who is easier to sway back to the dark side.

Anyone who says Dick should be Batman is wrong. Nightwing is the proper succession of Batman, taking what works and improving upon what doesn’t. The writers and the characters have made it explicitly clear that he doesn’t want the cowl and that having Dick as Nightwing is better for the world than having Dick as Batman. Among the robins Tim and Damian are the only logical choices, Cassandra is an even better choice if we choose to ignore sex/gender and include the batgirls. Terry with Carrie as Robin is the best choice but not one that’s always available
