I think everyone's take on Sprong is stupidly dismissive. He did forecheck, hard. He hit, hard. He went to the boards, hard. He won puck battles. He can rip shots accurately. He's not the defensive chasm that is Fabbri or other touted forwards we have... I didn't see that when he was on the ice, and I watched most games... I also don't see that I missed something from his concrete stats. What was his TOI comparatively to others again? Sprong is far more valuable a player than people would believe. The second half of the season was garbage, and that was the half the coaching staff scratched him. We didn't start losing game after game because of Sprong's play... Now, will we be able to afford the 2.5+mil with a couple years or more in term that is due him for his play the past couple of years? Probably not. Pretending his play and production wasn't pivotal to the advancement of this team or that he'll be easily replaceable for what he did vs what he was paid is absolutely laughable. Guy is nearly a half ppg NHL player whose stats reflect production over lack of defense or the argument of having a sound all-around game - whichever way one spins it. He's not easily replaceable in the UFA game of cost per point, especially considering his TOI and linemates comparatively.

I didn't see the same thing, watch the first game against New Jersey again, I was hoping it was an anomaly but he quit on the play on the back check on Hughes goal, eiyher that or his defensive coverage is just completely lacking IQ, then watch the last 5 games he played, he's a big man and he put no body on anyone, only skates hard when he had the puck, would quit skating once he was caught up the ice on several occasions. Veleno skates hard but too often over skates plays, Sprong just plain stops skating, lalonde even said so in pressers and hardly throws anyone under the bus, it's too bad because he has a great shot, but I'm not sure if prior concussions have caused him to avoid contact, he just is too soft for a guy above 200lbs, can't have that for a 3rd or 4th liner, unless you have linemates who can cover for your lack of defensive effort, and they don't have that right now.

@@bradmaguire9611 That kind of plays into my point though... I was speaking to the whole season. His stats (pts per 60) places him at an elite level, and his defensive numbers aren't as bad as those other pure offensive players whose names are in that bracket (nevermind the names with the salaries that go along with that group). Long story short, he produces especially so at 5v5. To think you're making the team better by letting him go elsewhere is laughable, because there isn't anyone on the team, in the farm, or a UFA who can plug n play what he does without costing more than double his 2mil /aav - that's not my opinion either.

@@silver3344 metrics are great but do they equate to team chemistry and wins, I think the guy who's coaching the team knows more about what will work than either you or I and on more than one presser lalonde diplomatically said yeah he's got work on some team stuff, I'd say based on the eye test it's his inability to get back in the play and back check, but I guess you could throw your hat in and see if any NHL team wants you as a coach, let me know how that works for you😂.

I'm not seeing your contribution to the discussion of Sprong other than conjecture and drivel - just like the video. Your eye test sucks, and puck don't lie. If you said, his puck possession isn't great or he's not the best passer - I'd concede that point. Instead, you go on about how your point is valid because Lalonde opted and opined to scratch him in favor of a more defensively sound forward (which didn't matter because in those games their most used forwards forgot how to play).

If Sprong has "team stuff" to work on and gets scratched for that reason, then basically whats the excuse for never scratching Ghost or ever sending him under the bus? If Kane is worried that the Wings won't make the playoffs next year then he's not paying attention. He's knows Yzerman is going to move heaven and hell to improve the team to the point that we make it in. I have NO doubt that we'll make it in. He's playing the free agent game. If he doesn't want to come back then the world keep turning and one way or another when the music stops we will be in the postseason. That said I believe he has it made in Detroit and will likely be back.

My concern with banking on the recent draft picks to turn the Wings around is that there is no guarantee that they will ever be good NHL level players. We see many players put up impressive numbers in the minor or European leagues, however disappear on the ice when called up to the NHL level.

Some guys will plan out some will not, you balance that with FA signings and utilizing a deep prospect pool for future draft capital. The wings by all NHL grades have a very deep prospect pool, they can flip guys for future assets who might pan out or for FA signings who just don't fit with the team they're currently with but who might work for the wings, be patient, yzerman knows what he's doing.

I'm not for re-signing Perron. You can't keep the aging signings from last year or none of Grand Rapids players will get a chance next year. Bring up Nate Danielson next year. He would be a good fit with Raymond on the second line. Add Berggren and you have a potent second line. Sign Kane and put him with Larkin and DeBrincat. We still have our 3rd checking line of Fisher, Copp and Rasmussen. Done just do it Yzerman.

If Danielson can make a drastic jump that would be great, but he has to prove it, and he hasn't even played an AHL game yet. The wings let Larkin play 10 games in the AHL playoffs because he forced their hand, then he proved he was NHL ready by performing well in the playoffs and in the preseason that followe, maybe Danielson hasn't done that yetGot to be patient, yzerman knows what he's doing.

Thank you for putting together your show each day. The referenced expectations set for this season - be the last team out of playoffs - were made prior to season start and to Kane's signing. Kane's signing didn't guarantee a lot of playing time, let alone offensive production so at the time it made sense not to adjust expectations. However, he did add production to say the very least. That's a line of reasoning that they didn't meet expectations that I haven't heard anyone pick up. Or do the pre-season unknowns of Kane vs Illness/Absences make the "did the team meet our expectations" cancel each other out? Did you have an unspoken presumption of illness/absences and in which case, we should of made the playoffs with Kane in the lineup. Never seen data on it, but feels like the absences/illness of top players for the Wings was much higher than average. And Kane was a much more important piece to even meeting pre-season expectations. If Wings illness/absences of top players was par for the course this year than they didn't meet expectations given the addition of Kane - making the case Kane should be a priority signing and the other areas of missed expectations (and bad signings - Holl.) greater scrutiny and fault.

there is something w Kane that Wings pundits are ignoring, it is not just about term or $$$, he mentioned "where i fit in, who i'd be playing with". lineups. Detroit has 1 center. not only did Lalonde show every indication of not letting Kane play w him no matter how good the line is or how good Kane is with him, at the end LAlonde even took away DeBRincat. in the biggest games, and into any playoffs presumably, he left Kane stranded w Compher and Perron on a line where he could not perform. basically sidelined him and forced him to sit on the bench watching Raymond get all the star moments and watching the other 3 good forwards play freewheeling video game offense hockey. that imo will be a dealbreaker for him, esp after what he did after the break and how he carried the team w clutch play and production in general after the break. Larkin Cat Kane was the best line all year but wasn't together when it mattered.

You might of course be right, but he himself said that he was running out of gas at the end of the season after that illness. That might have been a reason why he was moved to another line. Anyway, I think Cat-Larkin-Raymond is the future, so I hope they stay together. I love Kane, so I hope he’ll sign with a team that he’ll enjoy playing in for the rest of his career. Possibly considering playing in a city where he plans to live after retiring.

The wings scored more than half the teams in the playoffs, you reduce your goals against, goals will come if you play the right way. Team defense leads to offense, getting the puck out of your own end leads to more time having the puck in the opponents end.

Predictions: Stays - Kane, Ghost, Fischer. Goes- Perron, Reimer, Sprong, Holl (buyout). Yzerman's going to give a little more than he wants to keep Kaner here imo and Kane said he wants consistency and to not keep changing teams. Wings need Kane he is huge offensively. Detroit should be a playoff team next year. I want Sprong to stay. He was really good offensively and was unfairly benched by Lalonde imo at the end of the year but I don't see him coming back bc Yzerman and Lalonde don't seem to like him. Perron I think is probably leaving.

Seider is no Shane Gostisbehere. I don't think Seider can play the blue line like Ghost on offense. In fact, i think Seider is a liability on offense. Enough said. These guys are giving Seider more credit than he deserves (at least on offense). If Ghost doesn't come back, i think Edvinnson may be in a better role to take on Ghost's spot, not Seider. But I'm hoping I'm wrong about Seider. I just think Seider disappointed me one too many times this past season, especially on blown assignments.

Right now, we need him to carry the D. Seider will start to work on offense roughly at the time when we dont require so many vets with their defensive deficiencies. Let ghost be ghost, and let seider concentrate on D because someone needs to if we're going to carry players like ghostisbehere and his nonexistent D work. If Kane doesn't sign, we need two top six forward free agents this offseason. Perron bumps down to 4th Line to mentor two prospects. Sprong is gone. Fisch stays on our Copp-Fisch-Moose line. Czarnik needs to be replaced by Kasper. JB on wing if he gets his 200ft game up. Defense is an absolute tire fire, and I have no predictions.

Czarnik was on waivers the last I checked. I think mazur is staying in Grand Rapids. If sprong leaves then Berggren could take that spot. Kane will require at least 3 yr contract to stay. Seider is great. Edvission looks good for his age. I’m even ok with chariot as long as he doesn’t end up on first line. I like ghost bear but I think cost might be too high to swallow with his def lapses. A strong 1b rh def is needed. So walman can go to the second line where he belongs. His cost is nice for what he did last year.

Yzerman is doing a great job. The Yzerman era is EDVINSSON, SEIDER, Raymond, SANDIN PELICA, Kasper, Mathur, Johanssen. Not Kane and Ghost Perron. Those are bridge fillers between the ugly past and promising future.

I think yzerman has a tough offseason. And choices. Because the following year a lot of bad contracts either fall off the books or a year away. Also a lot of the prospects will either be ready for nhl or not going to make it. And can get a good idea of team make up. Makes me wonder after resigning a bunch of players this offseason if he should make a splash to make the playoffs but possibly bring in a few bad contracts to do so. Or just try to wait till the following season. I think it depends on if he can move some bad contracts now. Petry holl husso maybe copp if he can find a true 2c

We need to bring in a legit top liner there’s a few players hitting the market that fit the bill and think it’s time we spend the money if they don’t then I want to see I want to know these kids they are all talking about inGr ar really up to task but I still think we need another Larkin type - if they add a player that can do it Raymond larks Kane if if comes back heck everyone will score more - in my eyes Perron and Kane should be special and mostly 3rd liners Kanes a great player not worried about him but a player like Reinhardt or something like that when we lost Larkin both times are team looked bad so all teams had to do is basically make sure Raymond didn’t get lose and Kane not very hard to do in 2-3 years maybe Raymond can be that guy as well which is why I think it’s super important we get a true top 6 we have a p 4 5 maybe and fill in the other and at the same time New York rangers def didn’t want to play us during first round I don’t think any team would been happy to play us that’s why ppl are so upset because if we got in a run was possible very possible they way we were starting to play - I am very curious to see what happens this year

These are genuinely shit takes on the red wings UFA's. Ghost and Kane should be the #1 priority followed by Fischer and Perron. By not signing Kane or Ghost you are losing over 100 points of offense, that doesn't get replaced by the kids especially and definitely not berggren.. Detroit's defensive problems are not squarely placed on Ghost. He has way too much upside as a power play qb and passer than his minor mishaps in the d zone. Petry, Holl and at times Maata all struggled as well. Seider doesn't play on PP1 because he's not good enough for PP1. He will grow and learn and get better. Fischer I agree with, easy resign. Perron same, resign for 3rd line money. If this team wants to be competitive again, you keep the pieces that worked well and provided you with consistent scoring. Fixing the back end will be hard because Yzerman signed too many average dmen to longer deals.

Kane was taking some pretty dumb box time too especially towards the end. If he loses the puck in the o-zone, his forecheck basically consists of hooking legs with his stick because he no longer has the legs for a foot race. He needs to stamp that out, it'd be better if he just quit on the play altogether and got off the ice for someone who can forecheck.
