Alright folks, time for my favorite thing about Disenchantment. The RAMPANT speculation. Last year I threw out a lot of theories in my video about Miri the Mop Girl and her potential future as the ruler of Dreamland, and a lot of what I said in that video came to fruition! But this video is all about speckles freculation. I mean, Freckles Speculation. Aka, who the heck is Freckles anyways? But the video is also gonna cover other mysteries too, so let’s dive in.

I believe that a better way to describe the goo's effects is it gives you what you need rather than what you want. The Elves didn't want to be Trogs, but needed those features to live underground. Lucy needed thier wings back for what came next. Bean needed to catch her dream doppelganger in order to have understanding of her magic and the doppelgangers.

so that could very well mean that if an Elf drank the goo while above ground, something else could happen? since if drinking it underground turns elves into Trogs, then above ground it will be different maybe if Elfo drank it, he'd become a big elf...a more true & balanced half-elf/half-ogre

Freckles could also in theory be Dagmar's older brother. When he's putting Zog to sleep, he does the forehead circular motion that Dagmar used to do to get Bean to go to sleep. We only know that Jerry was the littlEST brother, not the only other brother, and for being the first-born male heir, Cloyde doesn't really seem like he was raised to rule Maru. Dagmar even says that Maru has declined under Cloyde's rule. What if Freckles is the rightful heir of Maru, died, escaped hell, and came to inhabit the dummy known as Freckles? It's a stretch, but not outside the realm of possibility. Perhaps this even has ties into the debt to Hell beyond just destroying Cremorah. Dagmar perhaps made a deal to get Freckles' soul back from the devil.

Another reason Yog might have it out for Zog: Zog did go on to marry Oona, who said that she was once in love with Yog. So his jealousy over Oona could definitely give more weight to the "Did my brother kill me??" thoughts he might have.

We shouldn't forget that Dagmar mentions "A debt to Hell that must be paid off" which was paid off by her marrying the Devil. But what incured the debt? I feel it is related to freckles. A soul that was released from hell which incured the hell debt. So maybe it is Yog and Dagmar freed him? Could also work with Beans twin brother. If that brother died somewhere in between.

I assumed they made a deal with the devil for magical powers / knowledge, and in return, had to provide a bride for the devil that had specific requirements, which is basically what the painting of Bean was supposed to have her become.

Another clue is all the Oggs are voiced by the same voice actor (zogg and his father). And Freckles shares the same voice, do that could be further evidence Freckles is Zogg's brother/son

Its interesting coming back to these theory videos now Disenchantment is finished. You were right theorising that Freckles was apparently Zøg and Dagmar's other kid. Its just a shame the final season didn't really have time to explore the implications of that reveal properly.

After the episode with the "evil" doppleganger, i had the idea that maybe Freckles is Zogg's double inside the doll (hence why they sound almost the same). The king himself has been talking about dreams and having to fight a double, twin or something like that.

Great theory video! Another thing I just noticed: The way Freckles making Zøg fall asleep in S4 E5 (by rubbing his forehead) greatly resembles how Dagmar puts Bean to sleep in S2 E1 - telling her "this is what I used to do when you were little". This could also hint to Freckles being Dagmar's son or Dagmar inhabiting Freckles' body.

After season 2 I had a theory that what Leavo and Rulo call the goo is more than just a coy way of referring to it. "The very thing" is used to describe it multiple times across multiple seasons and if we take this name literally it could mean that the goo intensifies an aspect of the drinker ("The VERY Thing"). It intensifies the squid's size, Lucy's demonic status and Bean's crumbling mental health is brought to it's most extreme point with her literally falling apart. Before season 3 I assumed the "Very" referred to size only and the goo would be used as a way for Elfo to become larger (Like the squid) which would make him a more suitable mate for Bean. Story wise this would provide Elfo with a difficult decision to make: Does he change himself to make the person he loves love him back or try harder to make her love him despite his flaws? (They did a very similar story in Futurama's "Parasites Lost") Everything about my theory held up until Leavo drank the goo and turned into a Trog, but there could be an explanation behind that which still supports my theory. Love your videos, btw. Keep them coming.

In regards to the "very" aspect of Leavo, he was an elf in a self-imposed exile for most of his life. I wonder if it might come back to why exactly some of the elves fled to Elfwood, while some stayed, seemingly becoming Trogs and Sea-Trogs. Maybe they chose to stay behind... Another self-imposed "exile" from Elfwood? That might tie in to why Leavo became a Trog, which are seemingly the result of a long enough exile for an elf (even if, in the Trogs' case, it probably took several generations.) Also, I really like your interpretation of "the very thing", it's very much in line with the sort of word-play that comes up a lot in Groening's works. I think you really might be on to something there.

@@CanidRose His exile is something I considered to be the reason for why he turned into a trog. Up until that point he was somewhat of an outsider amongst the elves, then he drinks "The very thing" and now he's very much an outsider. And you're right, the Groening style is what led me to this theory. In any other show I wouldn't have given a second thought to an ambiguous phrase like that.

So like the super soldier serum in the first Captain America, it amplifies the most prominent trait of whoever ingests it? Luci’s body being uninhabited, it enhances his demonic form. Leavo has to fully embrace his trøg aspect. Bean manifests another personality. Makes you wonder what if Elfo drank it. Would his elf side mean he turns into a trøg, or would his ogre side affect it more? In Part Four he’s growing increasingly disillusioned after learning more of the history of Dreamland, how would that play into his change? The only weak link is Slimy, but given that was a season two episode from 2019 and the show was very much baby steps at serialisation at that point the writers may not have figured out at that point the rules around the goo, which were really only explored this last batch of episodes.

@@jbcatz5 I mean, slimy was also probably not sapient. Sentient, sure, but I doubt he was capable of human-like intelligence. Could be it functions much more simply when an animal is involved, since their traits are less complicated. Slimy was a baby octopus, still growing up. The goo may have just made him grow a lot faster, and a lot bigger (though it's hard to tell, without any other examples of Slimy's species to go off of.)

I'm pretty sure the problem isn't size. Elfo's Dad and the ogre princess had a even greater size difference and that didn't stop them. I'm pretty sure Bean's interest in beautiful, blue haired mermaids is a much greater hurdle to overcome. Also Elfo's interaction with the two Bean's makes it clear that he knows Bean doesn't love him and is okay with it. Bad Bean offering Elfo what he wanted was what made him realize she was Bad Bean. And it's telling that knowing that he still gave Bean the sword.

I was always hesitant to join the Yøgg train, but you did make it seem more possible. I however LOVE your secret son theory. It all adds up, including the debt to hell being related to him. I’d go either way- the son died and she promised a debt to hell to keep his soul in freckles, or she killed him/he’s still alive and possessing freckles as part of her plan. The only missing link is- who raised him with all the knowledge?

I'm am on board with the Freckles is Dagmar and Zog's kid theory, BUT there is a line towards the end of season one (when Zog is recounting their marriage to Lucy) where he explicitly states that Bean is Zog and Dagmar's "one and only child". I guess a secret twin would work around that, but that's a pretty big misdirect.

Here is my theory on why Leavo was turned into a trog: He spent his life (except for that time in the cult) trying to more about the elves history and about them. He found what that was, except he found it the hard way. Along with everyone else. Luci got wings but at price, he seems to have a *split* personality. One can be a lot more rude and... weird I will put it. While the other is just him. (When he is both parts of his body together he seems either more rude then usual, or just a lot more annoying then usual. When he is just his head (or just his soul), he seems fine and normal. Slimy: Became bigger and stronger, seemed way too obsessive and not as shy.... I still can't explain beans yet but that's what I have so far.

The only shame of the fifth season I liked the ending, but I still can't rest for the way they treated Freckles, basically the authors dedicated half of the fourth season to this character and in the fifth after one scene he has maybe three lines left. They didn't even explain why Cloyd and Becky became puppets. What a waste.

to support the secret brother theory, if you think about it. that might not be a beauty mark on dag's cheek it might also be a freckle. the other one covered with make up but dag might have one on each cheek. so it'd be counting. one freckle on each cheek for her. two for freckles the dummy and three for bean. very small detail like that is shit they like to pull lol.

Something I noticed rewatching Part 3 a few days ago - in the last episode, Miri opens a cupboard and throws a crown into it. Who does does she throw the crown at? Freckles. I thought speculating and being right would ruin part of the reveal. But after calling Zøgg's bear child and the elf/trøgg connection, I can confirm that it only improved the reveal. Also hey why are the Trøggs and Zøgg line spelled so similarly, It can't be coincidence 🤔

Ooh Johnny could you please do an analysis of Dagmar? I feel like there’s SO MUCH to her! There has to be, and I believe that she does somewhat love her daughter. I think she may be a mirror clone, because there has to be a LOT of mental gymnastics to have a child and husband with an enemy, what if after she had Bean, her mirror counterpart switched places with her? Idk it’s just so sad because in Beans dying moments underwater, she even called out for her mother, which is heartbreaking because since her awakening, she has only been incredibly manipulative and malicious towards Bean

I feel like those scenes showing Zog's neglect and jealousy of Yog may imply that Zog himself poisoned his brother so people would be forced to care about him. He also mentions while buried alive that he's killed a lot of his family members and was upset by the idea of meeting them again after he killed them. Things come in threes, The poisoning of Kremora, the poisoning of Dagmar and there only one other poisoning event that changes the history, and that would be the poisoning of Yog. They now seem to be focusing heavily on the relationship between Zog and his brother... Hmmm just like we found out that Dagmar was poisoned when the show puts emphasis on that "relationship" of Bean and Dagmar. Coincidence? I think not 👀

I'm pretty sure I know where the goo comes from. The brains of trogs/elves when Bean walks in on Dagmar eating from a trogs brain in season 3 we see the goo left on her lips is the same color as the goo. Also Elf bodies contain magic naturally given the power weve seen elf blood have. So Dagmar may have been trying to get the effects of the goo without finding the secret room containing the goo.

While I understand while you might think Zog had motivation to take the throne, but then again, there's a scene where Zog confesses to never wanting the throne in the first place. He says that he was "a fighter" and enjoyed fighting and completion more than the prospect of being king.

The only thing I'd question with the Goo is that it caused Bean's Bad Bean Dream. Zog specifically warns her, though casually, to not kill herself in the dream in an earlier episode. I'm not 100% on if that means he took the goo earlier in his life, if it's something that occurs for all rulers of Dreamland, or if was both. I'm leaning towards it being both, since that means that the trial of the dream is part of "DREAMland"'s properties, but then Bean gaining a new body was the goo working out that she deserved a second chance.

I've had many thoughts as to who Freckles is. After re-watching all the episodes with Freckles I have a few thoughts. I don't think it's Bean's brother or half brother. I can't see it being Yog either. Before selling Freckles Dagmar says I couldn't possibly sell that one. He's my favorite, almost like a son. I think it's a a goon, elf or trog that's still loyal to Dagmar. Explains why Freckles drove Derek, Jasper and the fairy out of Dreamland to Steamland, but wasn't smart enough to avoid being caught himself.

The way i see it, the bad bean is the personification of her evil side that her monther and siblings have been "cultivating" since they forced her to make a pact with the demon Lucy, which has been pushing her to do bad deeds since season 1, "do it do it". The goo allowed her to get rid of that evil side. However, is it possible that Dagmar knew this was going to happen and manipulated the events so she could get the evil bean for her purposes. I think it is also possible that there are two dagmars, the one we have been seeing is the evil doppleganger, and the one at the doll's shop is the original.

I was scratching my head as to why Bear Lady came back for an ep just to 'die' and add a child for Zog, but then I was like 'why?' Now that I've seen most of your theory videos, I see this show as a big worldbuilding finale theyre working backwards towards. This makes the plotting a big haphazard, but I was scratching my head during the derek/bear stuff wondering why we introduced another child only for Derek to suddenly get a storyline and then the puppet convinces them to 'murder' someone only for them to all get captured and ... that's it? Firstly, it's far more of a Single story with puzzle pieces and nothing is random when you've paid attention to the details as you've proven, secondly, this Freckles = Zog's son makes a lot of sense. They grouped these three together as the sons of zog intentionally, and in the same sense that there's three points on the castle, will there be a future character with a single freckle? If Mop Girl had had a single freckle, they'd clearly be designed as the Three Og's.

It may be worth noting that Dagmar's beauty mark could be interpreted as a single freckle. One on her, two on freckles, and three on Bean. Could lend credibility to the son theory

i think the writers of the show just watch ur videos for inspiration/new plot points. i love both of these theories! i think they're well justified. the only piece i'd wish you'd mentioned was that oona used to be in love with yog (i cant remember if they were ever in an actual relationship), though idk how much that would play into the theory as a whole. great vid! can't wait to see what comes of it :)

I'd say the most likely will be that it's just Dagmar or it's Zogs evil dream twin. I really liked the last two theories, and they definetly got my brain thinking. If they wanted to go these routes they certainly could, and I would be 100% here for it.

The evidence you provided is compelling, but I doubt Bean has a secret twin brother. Though this isn't substantial evidence otherwise, Dagmar's pregnancy with Bean was brought up in Bean's play. In the play, Pig King Zog beams over Dagmar's pregnancy and hopes that she'll give birth to a princess. Of course, the play was written by Bean so everything is from Bean's perspective, but given how the series is with its writing it would have been better for foreshadowing if King Zog said he prayed for a son. Honestly, it would have been better if the play's angle was about Bean not being the son and heir King Zog wanted. However, the play did come across more like an idealized version of Bean's life. Freckles also knows quite a bit and I can't imagine Freckles doing all of this behind-the-scenes action if he knew he was Zog's son and the rightful heir to Dreamland. He seems like somebody that would act in selfish interest instead of the interests of Dagmar, Cloyd, and Becky. I think it would be best if Freckles's true identity was a character we already met instead of a new addition. The idea of Freckles being Yog doesn't make much sense to me after what we have been told about Yog from Oona and the flashbacks, and to spring another surprise Zog son, especially one with Dagmar, is pushing it too far. Zog seemed to be present for Derek's hatching so I would expect him to have been there for Bean's birth as well. If Cloyd and Becky were the ones inhabiting the other two puppets, it would make sense for Freckles to be alive as well. Could Freckles be Zog's mirror doppelganger? That would explain why Freckles knows about Zog's past and may explain why he was in Zog's dream. As a mirror doppelganger, Freckles could be like a repressed conscience for Zog. Freckles speaks a lot like Zog in both sound and diction. Not only did Zog literally voice Freckles, Freckles has Zog's voice before he took up smoking.

That make sense if freckles was actually beans twin brother and that he was kept away so that dagmars plans goes well, but I also think that freckles was kept from dreamland because maybe they don't want the dreamland citizen to know they have twins? ( if a royal family have twins they would sometimes kept the other twin from public, yes it's a thing ) and maybe the secret society may have something to do with freckles ( this is just a crackhead theory in all honesty- )

So I just rewatched P3E9 and I'm wondering if freckles is "bad zog"??? That is, if there is a good and bad version of every character? Bc while he was in the castles mental ward, he escaped after he hears Dagmar say"let me in and I'll let you out" and then after that is when they get freckles from the shop... On the ripped page of The Book of Ogs you can see a TR making the name on the page Trog. It also states he was cursed. Add in the fact the trogs spell their species name with the same slash through the O that the King Ogs use and it seems that maybe King Trog was a half elf that was cursed, giving him a hideous appearance, and the trogs are his decendents.

I still feel like some one was helping Dagmar in season 1after she was brought back to life. Because Dagmar was off with bean when people where being turned to statues. And when Zog and Odval go looking for Oohna they come across the old mental dungeon with the door now open. So it feels like whoever was locked down there is the one helping Dagmar.

my first thought and the one I can't shake is that Freckles is evil mirror Zog escaped in a different body. Zog made a few references to not letting the evil one take over and that nightmares were normal for him too. So there's an evil Zog referenced as existing somewhere.

So something just struck me as odd ... and while I still think there is a chance of Freckles being Bean's step brother or some other relative since, like Bean he has freckles. While Dagmar does not. Ignoring that Freckles, well has freckles, for one second. When I rewatch the scene, two things struck me as odd. The "Replace Your Child" sign puppet is looking directly at them. And the "Need a Friend? This Won't Help." Which is being held by the King puppet. I don't necessarily think this could be King Xøg, but because there is a trog on the last shot of the scene, could it be King Trøg? I do not know how that would necessarily work out but I did find it to be an interesting touch.

Yog + Dagmar = Freckles! I think that Freckles is the son of Dagmar and Yog. I think he is Bean’s OLDER brother/cousin. I also don’t think his real name is Freckles. I think his real name ends with Øgg. Like Bean, Dagmar is very manipulative in almost everything she does. I think she killed Yog before he could say anything about a baby, maybe before she even delivered the baby. Like Cloyd and Becky, he might have the ability to transfer himself into a puppet. I’m not sure what he did while his mom was stone. But I think this theory fits.

I love freckles' character but I kind of like the brother theory because I want freckles to end up being a hero rather than a villain despite the obvious hints to him being evil. The concept that freckles is yog, which they share the same hair colour, and that he learns zog didn't poison him but Dagmar did to remove the curse sooner would be interesting to see him switch sides
